POPSLotsa Helping Hands - coordinate caregiving, online, for free When illness or misfortune hits, friends and loved ones often want to help, but coordinating the help that's been offered and what needs to be done can seem overwhelming. This site offers free, online tools to help. Testimonial from one user : Yes, this has been a godsend for us. When I get home from the hospital, I just do one email to everyone. Then when I need help, I just put the date and the tasks and people sign up. This site has made dealing with my wife's cancer doable at all. (I, too, have a chronic, serious disease and can not do very much.) It has also been amazing to count all of our friends--and to give them the opportunity to help.

POPSBush Meddling in Science to Continue Beyond His Termby
Wisco Yesterday 2:23 PM One example of this is Todd Harding, hired to work at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. His qualifications? He chaired the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans. The there's Jeffrey T. Salmon, hired by the Energy dept's Office of Science. His science background? He was a speechwriter for Dick Cheney. The piece goes on: "I believe it's unethical to do this. Clearly the people voted for change," Boxer said. She said she had discussed the issue with members of President-elect Barack Obama's transition team, adding: "They are on top of it." Here's hoping they can do something about it.

POPSGreat End the Fed Posters These are really good posters. Precise and to the point. The Federal Reserve is not more 'Federal' than Federal Express. It is a private institution run by a private organization that congress or the senate have no direct control.

POPSThe Center-Right Nation Exits Stage Left For anyone who didn't read the attribution, this is written by a fellow at the Hoover Institution, who are far, far from liberal. But the "exits stage left" line makes me wish it were possible to reasonably use the stage direction from Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale : Exit, pursued by a bear. Heh.

POPSThe Greenhouse Gas That Nobody Knew It's like eating mushrooms. You would soon be dead if you ate every mushroom that you didn't know was poisonous or not. The only sensible way to eat mushrooms is to only eat those you already know are not poisonous. Intelligent beings use the precautionary principle, business and technological innovators eat any mushroom / chemical they can find with the result that they (and the rest of us) are more like to end up prematurely dead. Wise men know that innovation is deadly dangerous, and that societies which are based on it risk extinction.

POPSMormon's Tipped The Scale I guess there is a way to justify denying human beings the same rights as everyone else and that is to call it "pro-marriage" and not "anti-gay". Of course it's a clever play on words to describe a bigot but what else is new? If the Mormons and other small minded individuals are really interested in saving the institution of marriage they would forget about same-sex unions and focus their efforts on divorce.

POPSA 2008 post-election promise More: No presidential candidate in my lifetime has inspired me as much as has our new President-Elect, Barack Obama. On election night, in the spirit of unity and conciliation, he asked us to “resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics”. He asked us to remember the values we all share, and he promised that he would be the leader of all Americans, not just the ones whose support he already has. In this same spirit, I wish to refrain, at this historical moment, from pointing out that your first major prediction for the post-Obama world — that angry coloreds would riot in the streets — has utterly failed to come true. Now is not the time for blame. Now is the time to put one another at ease, not to put one another on edge.
