Sarah Palin and elitism
rmowery
by rmowery  9-22-2008
Great article. The only thing I would have to point out is where the author states: "The point is that she comes to us, seeking the second most important job in the world, without any intellectual training relevant to the challenges and responsibilities that await her." I mean - hell Bush had no intellectual training either (not to mention no intellect) and things have gone so well over the last 8 years, right?

Another Second Life resource...
Lara Nieberding
by Lara Nieberding  7-5-2008    1
I am wondering where the market is for these services. If you have spent any amount of time in Second Life you will quickly realize everyone and their cousin is a consultant for Second Life. If you ask a consultant who their target is, they always want to bring in Big Corporate. My question is: Why? Are these consultants truly listening to their market? From what I am seeing, those interested in Second Life are there because they enjoy the environment. That is the fun of Second Life-getting in there and doing it yourself. My advice to Big Corporate: be very aware of intellectual property laws. Read Linden Research Labs fine print.

Stereotyping Yourself Contributes to Your Success (or Failure)
wildcat
by wildcat  4-9-2008    1
As it turns out, research shows that such performance failures cannot always be attributed simply to inherent lack of ability or incompetence. Although some have jumped to the highly controversial conclusion that differences in attainment reflect natural differences between groups, the roots of many handicaps actually lie in the stereotypes, or preconceptions, that others hold about the groups to which we belong. For instance, a woman who knows that women as a group are believed to do worse than men in math will, indeed, tend to perform less well on math tests as a result.

Hypnosis It is Natural

The most powerful tool you possess There are potentially huge benefits for those who use hypnosis as part of everyday life. When you understand hypnosis you start to see its potential to improve human performance in the physical, emotional and intellectual realms. For me, rumour, gossip and suspicion weren't good enough.

ACADEMIA & the Orgy Of Touchy-Feely "Definitions" - They count on your (our) INTELLECTUAL LAZINESS!
ianschneider
by ianschneider  1-18-2008
"McCarthy focuses on the relationship between tempo, measured in beats per minute, and "feel," described as the rhythm's kinetic energy as a product of the subdivision of the beat and its accentuation" this is oversimplified ad obsolete. the academia is enough to not make you realize - nothing *real* is being said.

A History of Intellectual Discussion of 'Accelerating Change'
edgewalker
by edgewalker  10-9-2007    1
Accelerating information and communication technologies have today become the most dynamic systems in modern society. Faced with the daunting prospect of further acceleration in their capacity, most people presently either deny the possibility, or ignore the phenomenon entirely. Futurists and Transhumanists believe that the evidence is strongly against the first response, and that the second response is unwise. Learning about accelerating change and grasping the concept from a broad and multidisciplinary perspective is the most pressing challenge of today. Here's an excellent article from http://www.accelerationwatch.com/history_brief.html that accumulates some of the most incisive thoughts on these topics from a range of careful future thinkers, and to provide a number of synthetic interpretations, including one, the developmental Singularity hypothesis

Why The Loudest are Often the Most Wrong
Kore7
by Kore7  5-5-2007    12
This classic paper by Kruger and Dunning, Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments , examines the psychological reasons for the unfortunately common correlation between ignorance and confidence. We argue that when people are incompetent in the strategies they adopt to achieve success and satisfaction, they suffer a dual burden: Not only do they reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the ability to realize it. Instead, like Mr. Wheeler, they are left with the mistaken impression that they are doing just fine. As Miller (1993) perceptively observed in the quote that opens this article, and as Charles Darwin (1871) sagely noted over a century ago, "ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge." Presidential IQ study
jklugman
by jklugman  7-17-2006    2
This study purports to obtain estimates of the IQ of all 42 presidents of the United States and correlate this measure of IQ with evaluations of leadership performance. I have not read the study, but it looks problematic on measurement grounds alone, and I certainly hope that the authors don't try to make a causal argument about the IQ-leadership link. Might be good gristle for teaching.
