It might sound silly, the idea that new life could be created in an attempt to offer you a great deal on C1@Lis!!, but have you tried registering for a forum recently? Even gaining access to the lowest level of interaction online now requires elementary Turing tests to tell the humans from the robots. Another option is the idea of the net itself becoming sentient, a vast self-modifying array of connections and information storage with limited connections to the outside world (kind of like that glob of grey goo you carry around in your skull). If that happens then Gibson help us all - remember that the net is made of about 90% spam, 9% porn, and quite a lot of whining blogs. If that mixture ever becomes self-aware we're not quite sure what it'll do, but the odds are against it being anything good.

POPSThe Landscape of Possible Intelligences If we imagine the levels of intelligence as a ladder with unevenly spaced rungs, there may be jumps that some intelligences are not able to complete, or their derivatives are not able to jump. So a type 3 mind may be able to jump up four levels of bootstrapping intelligence, but not five. Since I don't believe intelligence is linear (that is I believe intelligence grows in many dimensions), a better illustration may be to view the problem of bootstrapping super intelligence as navigating across a rugged evolutionary landscape.

We see such developments already in websites such as Facebook and Flickr, and programs such as Google Earth and World of Warcraft. We are being linked together, ever so slowly by a collective consciousness.

POPSMayan Calendar - The Nine Underworlds The Mayans are said to have conceived their Calendar more in terms of the evolution of consciousness, than what we would call cosmology, astronomy, or even astrology. Now I admit that the mapping of a scientist's view of the evolution of the universe onto the Nine Worlds might be a tad selective. Nevertheless, it is worth noting how time seems to speed up as consciousness evolves. The other thing to take in, is according to this interpretation, we are in the last moments of a 16.4 billion year cycle which gives pause for thought. One could even see Clipmarks and the World Brain as being part of this evolution in consciousness. Groups of intelligences collaborating constructively should lead to a new level of consciousness.
