POPSBoutique Hotel by the Great Wall "Modern-day China - its architecture, its quickened cultural pulse - is defined by such mixed messages, a sign that the country's ambition to create a unique capitalism "with Chinese characteristics" may be realised. One part bird's nest, to one part brave new world."

POPSWill Taliban denounce terror? With their teachers now coming out against terrorism, will the Taliban in Pakistan or Afghanistan follow suit? Madani is unsure. But he wants senior clerics from the eight member states of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) to come together to debate whether to endorse the Deobandi decree. "I don’t know what will say," Madani said. "But my intention is that this issue must be debated. I am trying to bring together the ulema and muftis from all SAARC countries in India. Then I will request them to endorse this decree."

POPSSharism: A Mind Revolution However, daily decisions for most adults are quite low in creative productivity, if only because they've switched off their sharing paths. People generally like to share what they create, but in a culture that tells them to be protective of their ideas, people start to believe in the danger of sharing. Then Sharism will be degraded in their mind and not encouraged in their society. But if we can encourage someone to share, her sharing paths will stay open. Sharism will be kept in her mind as a memory and an instinct. If in the future she faces a creative choice, her choice will be, "Share."

POPSThe Power of Dignity This article is both pragmatic and powerful. When I read it, in ODE magazine, I retyped it and sent it to people. Now that it's available online, I'm posting it here for your consumption. One of the things I most respect about Arch Bishop Tutu is his ability to see beyond normal constructs and into functional applied solutions. Ideas like "forgiveness" can be too large to embrace and too hard to embody. What if we let such overwhelming constructs go in deference to more concrete steps, like simply listening to the experience of our "enemies". It's almost like a post-modern revision of Stockholm Syndrome -- to set out with the intention of viewing one's "enemy" as an empathetic character within his own context. It doesn't diminish the impact of my enemy's choices on my life, but it can change radically how I live in response to that -- by enriching my perspective and depolarizing our postures. Becoming human to one another is the first and most important step.

POPSObamas poor country formative education, blinkers OFF I recently heard Mick Dobson Aboriginal australian spokesman heartened by Obamas intention to embrace issues with the Indiginous Nations issues in USA.I hope like others that he is not blinkered to overseas exploitation of other indiginous cultures and walks the talk globally,, cherry picking will be the cowards way given his pride in statements that he grew up in the "poor" country till he was 10. That country has extremes between rich and poor and justice is often very expensive depending on colour and religion.Melanesians have no respect or rights and due to USA policy in cold war years had their self determination shredded by US and corrupt Sakano,s expansionist ambitions.

POPSThe "Bailout" & The Banking Industry's Dirty Little Secret
. . . . still struggling. And I would not assume that we are done on the acquisition side just because of the Washington Mutual and Bear Stearns mergers. I think there are going to be some great opportunities for us to grow in this environment, and I think we have an opportunity to use that $25 billion in that way and obviously depending on whether recession turns into depression or what happens in the future, you know, we have that as a backstop.” Read that answer as many times as you want — you are not going to find a single word in there about making loans to help the American economy. On the contrary: at another point in the conference call, the same (anonymous) executive explained that “loan dollars are down significantly.” He added, “We would think that loan volume will continue to go down as we continue to tighten credit to fully reflect the high cost of pricing on the loan side.” In other words JPMorgan has no intention of turning on the lending spigot.

POPSA Recipe for Motivation "The findings were remarkable. Those who had read the exercise instructions in an unadorned, accessible typeface were much more open to the prospect of exercising: They believed that the regimen would take less time and that it would feel more “fluid” and easy. Most important, they were more willing to make exercise part of their day. Apparently, the students’ brains mistook the ease of reading about exercise for ease of actually doing the pushups and crunches, and this misunderstanding motivated them to actually think about a life change. Those who struggled through the Japanese brushstrokes had no intention of heading to the gym; the reading alone tired them out".

POPSObama Spokesman, Ohio Voter Registrations Tactics "OK" He argued that neither Obama's staff nor McCain's workers had broken Ohio law by registering there. But the state's law allows people who plan to live in Ohio permanently to register to vote no sooner than 30 days after moving there. Temporary residents aren't supposed to register, even if they live there for more than 30 days. Palestra.net, a student journalist-run affiliate of Fox News, which is owned by The Post's parent firm, News Corp., found that Obama campaign worker Jacob Smith, a Florida native, moved in with a host family in Howard, Ohio, on Sept. 28 or Sept. 29 - and registered and voted on Oct. 1. Baker said he wouldn't comment on individual cases. McCain's campaign didn't respond to a request for comment. But Don Schutte, Smith's host, said he was "kind of dismayed" after learning his guest had registered as a resident of his home.

POPS Why Obamanomics Isn't Clintonomics But that is not the path President Clinton ultimately followed. Along with congressional Republicans, he focused on balancing the budget, knocking down trade barriers, even signing a capital gains tax cut. Now I have talked to Obama economic advisers and they are signaling no intention to scrap his investment and tax agenda in order to focus on the budget deficit, $700 billion Paulson Plan or not. Obama himself is still talking it up in the debates, that's for sure. In fact, one Obama adviser told me the economy would have been better in the 1990s had Clinton focused on his "investment' campaign agenda rather than the "bond market strategy" that was more pleasing to Alan Greenspan.

POPSThe Republican War on Voting (& DOJ firings)
This article is a good overview of Republican tactics to suppress the vote and exactly what they are doing now with challenging ACORN's voter registration efforts. Be Aware: This is not an overnight or one season campaign; it started seriously focused on ACORN back in 2000 and it's intention is to eventually see this group put out of business. This case in MO also shows the link in the Republican illegal firing of U.S. Attorneys, which led to DA Gonzales having to resign last year and is a case being pursued by the FBI. In summary, as clipped here, the Republicans fired state DA's who wouldn't play along with them and go along with these voter challenges. Two more points: ACORN is not a Democratic or Obama organization but targeted by Republicans because they advocate for poor and minority interest. #2 Since Voting Day has not arrived there can not even be any voter fraud yet -- nobody's voted. All this propaganda is about registration forms & stupid, Mickey Mouse nonse

POPSTajik exile flees Russia for safety of Paris Deciding to leave Moscow may have been a spur-of-the-moment action, but he revealed that he started thinking about the need to leave quickly when he got word that Tajik officials were mulling whether to renew their efforts to bring him back to Dushanbe. "I pre-planned some appointments with French politicians, diplomats, correspondents and NGOs to discuss Tajikistan’s problems," says Atovullo. France is likely only a transit country for Atovullo. He intends to move soon to Hamburg, where he will wait for the "whirlwind" in Moscow to abate. Atovullo hopes to return to Moscow in the not-so-distant future. He explained that because Tajiks can travel to Moscow relatively easily, he is able to be more effective as a Tajik opposition activist when operating in the Russian capital.
