The Intelligent Egg
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-6-2008
The ramifications are enormous as we imagine homes that customize themselves to us and our needs. Adjusting temperature, music, lighting, and putting a pot on boil are all things that could be done automatically. Taken a step further we look at intelligent environments, where the home is constantly monitoring our health and safety, and is prepared to respond quickly. An intelligent home of the future may also ask us what time we want to wake up when we hit the sack. A plausible prediction is that these intelligent environments and or ambient intelligence will take away many of our chores and allow us to focus on productivity, learning, and leisure. They may stream customized interactive information that serves to create a nurturing environment. Differing from ubiquitous computing, it would allow us to create an intimitate connection with technology.

Get Ready For Science 2.0
skwirlinator
by skwirlinator  3-7-2008
“You have to study social interactions in the real world. Traditional social scientists have tried to understand these systems by data collection, but more effective Science 2.0 research involves design interventions to rapidly improve e-commerce, online communities, healthcare delivery, and disaster response.

Drug target to stop cancer spread
k9riley99
by k9riley99  12-28-2007
...if researches could design a drug to block Mena in the same way as Tes, it would potentially be a way to stop the spread of cancer once a turmour had formed. "Looking at the structure gives us clues in designing drugs which mimic the interaction with Tes and prevent cells from migrating, although that's a long way away." "...Mena was a very small part of the spread of cancer cells, but that was one of the control mechanisms that goes wrong." "Cancer cells use many complex processes when they break away from their tumour and spread to other areas of the body." Understanding these mechanisms and increasing our knowledge about this protein can hopefully help us to develope more effective cancer treatments in the future."

5 competencies of User Experience design
ericskiff
by ericskiff  11-6-2007    2
UX and the science of helping people do what they want to do (especially using the web) fascinates me. I'm privileged to know several people who simply 'get' UX and UI, but as a bit more programmer than designer, I really have to work things through to get it right. I'll definitely be studying this a bit.
