POPSWhy cultural transformation is possible "If we are to move beyond the current destructive phase of capitalism, we will do so because we tap the spiritual energy that progressives have yet to tap in any coherent way. Values hold the key. The hungers of the heart can be the bedrock on which we build a new social order."

POPSThree Servicemen sculpture in Apalachicola honors Vietnam Vets "And beyond that, he wanted the sculpture to be a heartfelt and simple thank you from the citizens of this nation to the service and sacrifice of the veterans and their families." She quoted from her husband's last public speech in May 1999, a few months before his death. "By the expressions on the faces of the intensity of the strain and the anguish that was part of the Vietnam veterans experience on the battlefield and at homecoming, and by their endurance and youthful dedication to duty, they reveal themselves as true heroes," she said. She told of how the sculptor had learned from his talks with Vietnam vets that "all treasured their deep bonds of loyalty, comradeship and interdependence," or as one veteran put it, "At first we thought we were fighting for our country but soon we came to realize we were fighting for each other."

POPSSharing "INDIAN" This word is insulting, we are not Indians, Indians are from India, Christopher Columbus put this label on the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas because he didn't know where he was. So why should we live with a lable that is not our's. Sharing is part of our culture, as Indigenous people, it comes naturally to those who follow the Red Path. Cougar

POPSCulture Influences Brain Function, Study Shows To read the full interesting article: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/01/080111102934.htm There is so much to learn. What is interesting is how this affects testing as in schools or IQ. I think it may start to show what many of us already know. People think and perceive differently and need to be tested that way or tests not given the same importance. People/children learn differently. I have a strong opinion that things won't change very fast in the classroom though. But maybe parents can learn and appreciate what they have. Maybe people can start to appreciate differences and what we all bring to the table.

POPSBrian Eno vs African Music ... Classical music is music without Africa. It represents old-fashioned hierarchical structures, ranking, all the levels of control. Orchestral music represents everything I don't want from the Renaissance: extremely slow feedback loops ...

POPSChristian Zionism: A story everyone should know RABBI MICHAEL LERNER: Well-- I'm hoping we have a few more years here. And I think in the 21st Century the growing wisdom of the American people and of all people is that our well being depends on the well being of everyone else on the planet, and I think that the Israeli population increasingly are coming to understand that their well being depends on the well being of Palestinians and of the Arab world. That there's that fundamental interdependence.

POPSModern Sushi: The Taste of Globalization Great review of two new books on the rise of the global sushi industry. “Sushi had started as a form of preservation,” Issenberg says, “but it was becoming precisely the opposite: a way of using the infrastructure of modernity to chaperone a delicate dish around the world.” Over the course of two decades, he writes, “the average price for bluefin tuna paid to Atlantic fisherman rose by 10,000 percent.”

POPSGlobal goodwill necessary for human survival
Continuation: ... As the one humanity, we are working out our mutual destiny and evolving to give expression -- with our different nationalities and talents -- to the extraordinary variety of divine life but in the form of unity. This is obviously a major problem for humanity; the world is so divided, competition is so rife today. It is the very nature of our political and economic systems, based as they are on market forces, commercialization, aggrandizement and power. If we would survive it must be changed. ... Competition, I believe, is based on fear. If we look back at our history, we can think of competition as it relates to the animal kingdom. It is natural for animals to compete for food in the struggle for survival. There is an ongoing competition between the wolves and the caribou, between the lions, tigers, pumas and leopards and the various branches of antelope and deer. All of these are in competition. But they do not think of it as competition. ...
