POPSDr. Who This is pretty interesting - neat to see the behind the scenes bits.

POPSDo You Find This Ad Offensive? There's a big story on the intersection of social media and health today. Unlike some of its competitors, Johnson & Johnson has been experimenting with advertising directly to consumers with Facebook applications and YouTube videos. But a video ad promoting Motrin for moms who carry their babies in slings sparked an uproar from connected consumers. I'm curious to know what you think --- is this video really offensive? It's clipped above.

POPSCertify Congo Tin? Lydia Polgreen's story on a Congolese mine is a fantastic piece of reporting that deserves to be read in its entirety. Towards the end she raises an interesting question: U.S. politicians have suggested certifying the source of minerals from Congo, in an effort to avoid funding conflicts. I'm not totally sold on such labeling programs -- diamond-certifying schemes have been another popular one. Money being money, won't military groups cut off from one resource just move on to another? Are there strong examples of commodity certification schemes that have actually stopped a conflict? If so I'd love to hear about it.

POPSReport: Military Should Use Less Private Security Government Executive story, by Robert Brodsky, points to more pressure on President-elect Obama to scale back on use of private contractors. Pair this story with another interesting one from the Washington Post today: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/11/16/AR2008111601841.html

POPSA Powerful Love Story This is a wonderful film for all women everywhere. I do like the novel better (I love Fannie Flagg) but it's charming and full of empowerment. I wanna go visit the Whistle Stop Cafe because the town loves and accepts everyone that society tells them not to. The best line in the film for me was when Ruth was asked why she ran away from her husband to shack up with Igdie and she asserts, "Because she's the best friend I've ever had, and I love her." Do yourself a favor and watch it with someone special--for the first time or again :)

POPSThey just don't fear heaven and earth "If anything, they are superior in many ways to us. Thinking too much about the future or worrying too much about the past is really unhealthy. The Pirahã taught me that very lesson. Living in the moment is a sophisticated way to live. I don't see depression. I don't see some of the things that afflict our society - and that's not because they don't face pressures." An interesting story.

POPSMental Health to Improve After Obama Win? In a testament to how much people had invested in this election, I've seen a handful of articles in the past few days talking about how an Obama win will relieve or increase stress amongst Americans. A lot of the reporting is anecdotal, as is the case with this story, but I thought it was an interesting idea. Those who feel relieved are hoping to reestablish trust with leaders over the economy and also see an Obama win as opportunity to improve race relations. Do you feel less stressed out now that the presidential election has been decided?

POPS My Obama Yard Sign Is Proof of Citizenship ~ Mark Steyn By the way, the argument that giving money to Obama is ipso facto proof of citizenship also clears up any question marks over those donations by "A Hitler" and "S Hussein". Congratulations! Oh, and if you want to know why The Boston Globe's parent company ( The New York Times) has been downgraded by Moody's to junk status, ask yourself why this story is in a foreign newspaper three thousand miles away rather than the local rag. Congratulations to my old comrade from the Conrad Black trial, James Bone, for doing the job Americans (or at least their media) won't do.

POPSJill Hazelbaker Info In an interesting story on Republican nominee John McCain, Jill Hazelbaker gives some interesting input.

POPSAnd the worst taste in a campaign mailer award goes to... Here's the rest of the story: Local party officials immediately climbed out of the muck to repudiate the piece and apologize, right? Not exactly. In a news release, the party disavowed the Hitler comparison but acknowledged that it had sent the piece out, in its entirety, because it was interesting and "might incite conversation." However, the release went on, "This sort of inflammatory language is neither condoned nor encouraged by our party." Except, that is, when this sort of inflammatory language is, in fact, condoned, encouraged and even distributed by the party. And they're calling him dishonest.

POPSWhy Is The LA Times Refusing To Release Obama~Khalidi Tape? The American people have the right to make an informed choice and this tape is important to understanding who Barack Obama is and what he believes. Release the tape. McCain campaign accuses L.A. Times of 'suppressing' Obama video http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-video29-2008oct29,0,5458024.story In reporting on Obama's presence at the dinner for Khalidi, the article noted that some speakers expressed anger at Israel and at U.S. foreign policy, but that Obama in his comments called for finding common ground. It said that Khalidi in the 1970s often spoke to reporters on behalf of the Palestine Liberation Organization. Khalidi later lived near Obama while teaching at the University of Chicago. He is now a professor of Arab studies at Columbia University in New York.

POPS'Joe the Plumber'-Gate; GOP Plant? The article cites a few more interesting facts, among which are these. Seems like "Joe six-pack" may have been a GOP plant, unless you believe that republicans show up to Obama rallies and that only FOX News caught him in the "candid moment": -- He is registered as a Republican, and voted in the state's GOP primary in March, county elections records show. But he was previously registered, dating back to 2007, in the Natural Law Party. -- He has lived in McCain's home state of Arizona - in both Mesa and Tucson. -- He lived in GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's home state of Alaska - in North Pole, from September 1992 to July 1993. The quote by familysecuritymatters.org is interesting, particularly it proves "intent" and that website is a neoconservative propaganda front. Of course now the accusations that this not-so-average Joe, who is NOT a plumber, is being attacked is an attempt to out-shout the truth like children on a playgr

POPS Obama camp calls for special prosecutor in fraud investigation Very interesting. Obama certainly knows how to fight back. If this does all get turned over to this FBI investigator -- who is also the special prosecutor recently appointed to investigate the U.S. attorney firing scandal. --I think the Republicans are going to wish they never started this hyped-up, unfounded ACORN story.

POPSAP Perhaps Worried as Obama-McCain Race Tightens As McCain rises in polls, AP must be more creative in manipulating headlines to try and favor Obama. Good old Rush points out the supreme irony of the AP hiding their own poll results deep within a story. As McCain rises in polls, the AP writes "Voters Souring..."

POPSGuess Who Else Has Tax Liens? Because, you know, associations matter when choosing a plumber, but apparently not when choosing a President. If tax liens are such an indicator of character and trustworthiness, wouldn’t it have more significance for the treasurer of a presidential campaign than for a man who just asked a question of the candidate? If the national media has such an interest in investigating a plumber who made a couple of national appearances, why wouldn’t they have at least the same interest in the people running a major party presidential campaign? Of course not. The same people who instruct us that Barack Obama’s 20-year membership in Jeremiah Wright’s church while Wright called 9/11 “chickens coming home to roost” now interrogate Joe the Plumber on national TV about his brief flirtation with the Natural Law Party.

POPSSurrender Monkey - Vote Fraud John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr - where are you now that we need you? (empasis mine) - from 2004 I keep hearing about the anger on the right - interesting how you can't find any stories where they call on assassination.

POPSBlews - good/bad/left/right - News ? am not sure if these are good news or not. we, modern society just embarked on a new phase of pluralism of attitudes, open source info-verse and inter-connectivity, may soon end up in a world where ALL is narrowed to be either of blue or of red? is it some kind of "new" black & white ???

POPSSilver Feast - photoblog celebrating men w/salt & pepper hair My dad started to get salt among the pepper when he was 17, and my husband has been looking more and more distinguished as time goes by with the sprinkling of silvery white that's been showing up in his hair. I'm definitely in favor of men letting their hair go silver with confidence and pride, instead of trying to hide it.

POPSIs There A Skeleton In John McCain's POW closet? Excerpted From The Rolling Stone Magazine: In its broad strokes, McCain's life story is oddly similar to that of the current occupant of the White House. John Sidney McCain III and George Walker Bush both represent the third generation of American dynasties. Both were born into positions of privilege against which they rebelled into mediocrity. Both developed an uncanny social intelligence that allowed them to skate by with a minimum of mental exertion. Both struggled with booze and loutish behavior. At each step, with the aid of their fathers' powerful friends, both failed upward. And both shed their skins as Episcopalian members of the Washington elite to build political careers as self-styled, ranch-inhabiting Westerners who pray to Jesus in their wives' evangelical churches.
