POPSCaution likely at EU summit on Russia BRUSSELS, Belgium: When it comes to action over Georgia, Russia has the European Union over a barrel. In fact, 1.2 million barrels. That's the how much Russian crude is pumped westward everyday down the Druzhba pipeline to fuel Europe's economies. This hard economic reality explains why Monday's emergency EU summit will struggle to produce much more than a slap on the wrist for Russia, despite Europe's exasperation over Moscow's invasion of Georgia and backing for its two separatist regions to break away. The EU gets roughly a third of its oil and about 40 percent of its natural gas imports from Russia.

POPS Dozens feared killed in Darfur camp "The United Nations urges restraint and calls for the immediate establishment of a humanitarian corridor so that the injured may be evacuated," said resident UN Humanitarian Coordinator, Ameerah Haq, in a statement. Hey UN, why not go after the bad guys instead of playing referee in an endless slaughter of civilians?

POPSTribalism, Violence and Poverty The suggestion is that people being ruthlessly exploited by an appeal to their traditional loyalties will, in times of confusion and suffering, shelter first in their family, then in their 'tribe'.

POPS Old US Allies, Still Hiding Deep in Laos The US has been pulling this crap for years. We did it in Vietnam and we did it prior to Iraq and continue to do it. Recruit people willing to risk their lives to help us and when its all over we dump them like yesterdays trash.

POPSA Beautiful Elegy for the Buddhas of Bamyan Cohen is perhaps the most eloquent writer in the opinion pages of the International Herald Tribune. This is perhaps the most genuine and insightful appraisal of the War on Terror that I have seen to date.

POPSArab Public School opens in NY say what you like, this is actually clearly unconstitutional- separation of church and state. i dont understand the why their getting special treatment and why tax-payers in brooklyn are willing to pay for this and why bloomberg would let this go down the way it did. there are plenty, PLENTY of christion faith schools, and hebrew schools in new york...but not one of them is a public school, they're all private. no tax paying based schools for any other religion- bottom line. this bothers me as it should bother others, and all those non faith believers like myself who critique the radical christain position on social issues....just remember christians are out of the dark and middle ages- islamists seem to be moving closer to those days, at least over the past 25 years.
