POPS Somali Fighters Hunt Pirate Crew Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow, reporting from the Kenyan port of Mombasa, said that more Somalis were becoming involved in piracy every day because of the money that can be made from the huge ransoms paid by ship owners. "They are being joined by former fishermen, former officials of the Somali navy and even students," he said. Efthimios Mitropoulos, the head of the International Maritime Organisation, spoke of "a series of negative repercussions" if ships had to reroute. Mitropoulos said the UN Security Council needed to strengthen the mandate of anti-piracy forces with "clear rules of engagement" and to make states bring to justice pirates they captured. "Piracy, as well as the recent terrorist attacks against international targets, are only symptoms of the fundamental problem which is the state of anarchy in Somalia," Raisuddin Zenenga, UN assistant secretary-general for peacekeeping, said in New York.

POPSDuh? are you kidding me? How the flipping hell does the international community let this shit happen. If I owned a boat with 100m worth of anything these jack sparrow wannabes would be strung up in a public place and plastered all of the world news networks. No way in hell should this be happening in the this day and age.

POPSPirates Capture Saudi Oil Tanker
Pirates have seized a giant Saudi-owned oil tanker in the Indian Ocean off the Kenyan coast and are steering it towards Somalia, the US Navy reports. The US-bound tanker was captured on Saturday some 450 nautical miles (830km) south-east of Mombasa, and is now approaching the Somali port of Eyl. The Sirius Star is carrying its full load of 2m barrels - more than one-quarter of Saudi Arabia's daily output. Its international crew of 25, including two Britons, is said to be safe. Lt Nathan Christensen, a spokesman for the US Navy's 5th Fleet, said the attack was "unprecedented". The route around the Cape of Good Hope is a main thoroughfare for fully-laden supertankers from the Gulf, the world's biggest oil-exporting region. With a capacity of 318,000 dead weight tonnes, the ship is 330m (1,080ft) long and is classed as a Very Large Crude Carrier. "Vela response teams have been mobilised and are working to ensure the safe release of crew members and the vessel," it a

POPSKarzai offers Mullah Omar security for peace talks This could be a great opportunity to get out of Afghanistan. If Omar agrees then all the US has to do is disagree and agree with Karzai's choice that we leave. First of all, Karzai would get some benefit by showing he is not a puppet of the US. Likely the benefit to him would be short lived without western support. The US would be able to disagree to the plan of providing security for talks with terrorists, thereby maintaining our long held position on that matter. In addition we would be respecting the wishes of the Afghan government by withdrawing, thereby showing respect for international law. And we could best of all withdraw our troops The longer we stay in Afghanistan the more people get killed, the more resources get used, the more money (we don't have) get's spent. And the more terrorist wannabes and people who hate us are created.

POPSFarming superpower Brazil spreads its know-how Planaltino, Brazil - As a young soil scientist, Edson Lobato looked out at the vast savanna of central Brazil and imagined fields of soy, corn, and cotton where most saw an inhospitable mass of red earth and tangled trees. His friends and family urged him to take his agronomy degree elsewhere, somewhere it would make a difference. But he joined Brazil's agricultural and livestock research agency (Embrapa) and relocated to the country's heartland, called the cerrado, where there was, at the time, little besides wooded plains, termites, and deer. Embrapa then set out to prove that those soils could produce like the most efficient cropland of Idaho. The agency poured millions into research. It sent teams of scientists like Mr. Lobato to the American Midwest to glean as much know-how as possible. Today his vision has helped turn Brazil into the world's largest exporter of soybeans, beef, chicken, orange juice, ethanol, and sugar.

POPSWho's Lori Berenson ? Lori Berenson is a US citizen currently being held as a political prisoner in Cajamarca, Perú. After serving nearly five years in harsh Peruvian jails high in the Andes, her conviction for treason against Perú and her life sentence were overturned. In June 2001 she was cleared of terrorism-related charges but convicted of collaboration, and sentenced to twenty years in prison in a trial that the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights claims completely violated her rights.

POPSMichelle Obama Demands Racial Loyalty From African Press Intl.
. . . in the spotlight. How sad for him to go out like this. We know he respects and admires John McCain. We know, from campaign finance records, that Powell contributed the max individual contribution allowed to McCain, not to Obama as the race progressed. But, as soon as he said it wasn't about race, he blew his game. Michelle Obama, the Closer, was earlier in the campaign in charge of setting the talking points of the day on the trail. She told audiences she has never been proud of her country until her husband was doing well in this race, that America is a mean country, and that she's just a regular working mom. POPSMcCain's Last Days Discover a Killer Attack
IMO - 5 Days ago Democratic VP candidate Joe Biden put his foot in his mouth (again). In this clip here he he talks about Obama having to face an international crisis and being tested. Since then, Biden's own words have been deadly used against himself and Obama. Two days later, McCain interview focused on this. at: http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/us_elections/article5000041.ece Three days later this ad appeared: http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/10/23/biden_gaffe_featured_in_new_co.html Four Days later, this ad: http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/08/23/mccain-rolls-out-new-ad-with-bidens-words/ Today: On this theme, not online yet, but ad on TV...and it's deadly; it's poison to Obama . It's scary. But it might be too late. All the stupid ungrounded smears about Ayers and voter fraud and poor Joe the plumber had no truth and missed the target. If McCain had focused on this question for the last 3 weeks, IMO, he c

POPSThis Day In History ~ The Beginning Of The Long War It was just past 6 a.m., Oct. 23, 1983. Within a few minutes, Beirut, Lebanon, would be rocked by what was at the time the largest non-nuclear blast ever recorded. Twenty-five years ago today, at the height of the Lebanese civil war, Islamic terrorists drove a Mercedes-Benz truck packed with explosives through a barbed wire fence, past U.S. Marine Corps checkpoints and into the lobby of the Marine Corps barracks at Beirut International Airport. The resulting blast leveled the four-story building and trapped hundreds inside. Two hundred-twenty Marines, 18 sailors and three Army soldiers were killed. A few minutes later, a similar truck bomb went off at a nearby French barracks, killing 58. http://wvgazette.com/News/200810220656

POPSEconomic Summit in D.C. Nov. 15 Don't expect a Bretton Woods for financial regulation. The most far-reaching thing that can come out of this meeting is a set of international principles, but even that's a stretch. Consider it, instead, as an orientation session for the next U.S. president, who is also expected to attend.

POPSHow Obama Is Winning Veterans "David McGinnis, a retired Army brigadier general and combat infantryman, spoke of meeting Obama for the first time and spending three hours discussing a broad range of military issues. "Here's a man who wanted to learn how to be commander-in-chief and was willing to listen and was willing to be held accountable," he said. "That's what you want in a leader." McGinnis was also impressed with Obama's efforts on behalf of veterans dealing with mental health issues, substance abuse and homelessness." Damn you Gen. McGinnis, you turn coat commie lover! How dare you sir! Now get back in line behind the President and stand in attention. A little to the left. Smile. Good boy!

POPSBiden to Supporters: "Gird Your Loins", For the Next President "It's Like Cleaning Augean Stables" I would agree. I would guess whether Obama or McCain is in office there has already been ample planning of the national level. I would say the line-up looks like this: 1. Iran due to Israel 2. Russia 3. Syria 4. Yemen 5. China due to Taiwan Not in that order, but those all are potentials. I would rather Obama be in office to handle diplomatically rather then McCain who would be looking to send more troops into battle or possibly worse.
