POPSArctic Ice Grows 30 Per Cent In a Year "Predictions of “ice free” summer for first time in history completely debunked" "In February, Dr. Olav Orheim, head of the Norwegian International Polar Year Secretariat, told Xinhua, “If Norway’s average temperature this year equals that in 2007, the ice cap in the Arctic will all melt away, which is highly possible judging from current conditions.” As per usual, the reality has failed to match the hype of the climate doomsayers. According to collated data from the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center and the University of Illinois, Arctic ice extent was 30 per cent greater on August 11, 2008 than it was on the August 12, 2007. This is a conservative estimate based on the map projection." Blue pixels represent increased ice coverage over the North Pole in the year since August 2007.

POPSInt'l Whaling Comm. Fails, Threats to Whales Mount, Whaling Nations Dig In A new report on climate change suggested dire consequences for the world’s whales if immediate steps aren’t taken to mitigate the effects of changes in sea temperature, freshening of seawater from melting ice and increased rainfall, sea level rise, loss of polar habitats, and the decline of krill populations. Meanwhile, the IWC’s Scientific Committee continued its important work on assessments of threats to whales from ship strikes, fisheries entanglements, and underwater noise generated by human technology, including energy company exploration, as well as from emerging and recurring diseases.

POPSPolar Bear Populations Given these uncertainties, the best estimate--guesstimate might be a better term--published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission's (SSC) Polar Bear Specialist Group, is that there are about twenty thousand to twenty-five thousand polar bears worldwide.

POPSSouthern Ocean rise due to warming not ice. I'm sure whatever affects one ocean will affect all of them either directly or indirectly. With all of the talk of ice melts, where the rise may come from land based ice, that slides into the ocean when once it would have been frozen tight, one of the primary causes of sea level rise will be due to the fact that like all but a few things, water expands when it warms. While the temperature rises may seem small, the volumes involved mean the expansion can be significant. That's not to mention the increased amount of energy held in the water, which can contribute to stronger storms, and rougher seas. The ocean is a big place, and for the temperature to rise by one degree, means a vast amount of energy stored.

POPSHuge Polar Study About To Begin Ahead of the IPY's launch, a team of researchers on the CAML project completed a 10-week census of marine life in a near-pristine strech of Antarctic seabed. "What we learned from the...expedition is the tip of an iceberg, so to speak," said team leader Michael Stoddart.
