Artists stage street scenes to lurk in Google maps
Mohir
by Mohir  11-13-2008
Like many first-time Street View users, Kinsley and Hewlett, then roommates, typed in their address and found their house. Kinsley and Hewlett soon found themselves discussing surveillance and virtual reality, and began considering how they might explore those issues and Street View through art. "But instead of dwelling on the darker undertones of these issues, we began to think about ways of playing with the system," Kinsley said in an e-mail interview from Iceland, where he is participating in an artist residency. The "Street With a View" project was his master of fine arts thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University. "We were interested in interjecting something staged, something fictional, into Street View and playing with - and subtly questioning - the notion of reality in something that we perceive as a factual representation of our world," said Kinsley, 26.

Google Maps the Flu
Rebecca Ruiz
by Rebecca Ruiz  11-12-2008    1
No doubt you've already seen this story online, but since I have a keen interest in using technology to map or graph one or more trends in a predictive or user-friendly way, I wanted to share this story about Google's Flu Trends. The web tool allows users to track flu-related searches by state to see if the flu is on the rise locally. Though this tool is in its initial stages, the idea behind it has been validated by another study showing that internet searches may correlate with flu outbreaks. Check it out here: http://www.google.org/flutrends/

Public Participation GIS
rachaelkeriwilliams
by rachaelkeriwilliams  10-2-2008    1
This approach to development of the city and surrounding areas is exactly what we need. The people must be empowered with the information that is typically held by the government, development organizations, and those with developed computer skills and high-speed internet access. PPGIS will facilitate the participation of marginalized members of society in the creation of the ecocity. It can be integrated with accessibility software and accessed from libraries, computing centers, and other designated points in the neighborhood, and should be integrated with a user-friendly interface —such as google maps, rather than the more technologically and geographically -oriented interface employed in typical online GIS sites.

An epic effort to promote biodiversity and document all 1.8 million named species on the planet. When completed, http://www.eol.org will serve as a global biodiversity tool, providing scientists, policymakers, students, and citizens information they need to discover and protect the planet and encourage learning and conservation. The Encyclopedia of Life is a collaborative scientific effort led by the Field Museum of Natural History, Harvard University, Marine Biological Laboratory, Missouri Botanical Garden, Smithsonian Institution, and Biodiversity Heritage Library, a consortium including the core institutions and also the American Museum of Natural History (New York), Natural History Museum (London), New York Botanical Garden, and Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew).

The Five Best Things About Google Maps
akipta
by akipta  9-8-2008
Google Maps is one of the coolest tools available from Google, and without a doubt it’s the best, most complete and most detailed world map on the internet. I love it and use it all the time. The satellite shots help with orientation in new territory, public transport stations are listed in my area, and when I have to give directions, Google Maps is the place to go.

"Armchair Archaeology" with Google Earth
invictus
by invictus  9-5-2008
“Google Earth gives you free access to imagery that would otherwise cost a fortune, and require specialist training to make use of,” says Dr Ur. And being able to pan and zoom the satellite images quickly makes it much easier to spot archaeological features and relate them to each other.

Cont: The problem is that this graph does not appear to be correct. Other data sources show Arctic ice having made a nice recovery this summer. NASA Marshall Space Flight Center data shows 2008 ice nearly identical to 2002, 2005 and 2006. Maps of Arctic ice extent are readily available from several sources, including the University of Illinois, which keeps a daily archive for the last 30 years. Ever notice that the same people who are constantly wrong about global warming are also the ones that push for socialism cause "it'll work this time, you'll see"

The big Buzz...
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-28-2008    4
It won't, though, be as complete as Google. While Google has had failures in extending its brand (Froogle, Google Base), its collection of services that are affiliated with its mainstream search product, like Google Maps, Image Search, and desktop search, can make switching away from Google difficult for users. Costello realizes that Cuil needs to layer in additional services, but as he said to me, the company has to start somewhere. Upshot: Cuil is certainly worth trying out. try it on: http://www.cuil.com/

Mapping Infectious Diseases - Realtime on the Web
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-10-2008
Some see HealthMap's wide net as an advantage. "I think this is the future direction of infectious-disease epidemiology," says Durland Fish, an epidemiologist at Yale School of Public Health, in New Haven, CT, who has previously worked with Brownstein. "This goes beyond traditional human case reporting, which we've done in the past," he says. For example, the software may pick up reports from scientists working outside the public-health arena, perhaps identifying a new animal virus with the potential to jump to humans. That could conceivably give public-health officials the power to intervene before an outbreak. "We would be able to identify where this virus is likely to emerge in humans," says Fish. "Once we get the first human case, we would know the virus has made the jump. That's presumably what happened with SARS."

Steve Rubel makes an interesting argument. For me the last paragraph in the story says it all...the founders know how to scale a product like this; they were all team members at Google and helped to launch such products as Google Maps, Adsense, GMail and Google Groups.
