deadcowkid
by deadcowkid  11-21-2008    3
This really sad. It is now confirmed that it was a suicide. Reports now say he had a large amount of anti-depressants in his blood stream. Doctors say an ealier call to authorties may have saved his life, yet hundreds of people watched and did nothing with excpetion to a few who called after he stopped breathing.

BlackBerry Storm Sells Out Quickly on First Day
merrie
by merrie  11-21-2008
"That's Verizon," two men said, laughing, as they waited in line at the Manhattan store, referring to Verizon Wireless' reputed reluctance to let its customers use anything other than a pricey data plan to access the Internet. Still, the carrier's reputation for reliable and clear coverage may dissuade loyal users from trading up to a WiFi device. When shown a BlackBerry Bold as an alternative to the Storm, the two men shook their heads. "That's another network," one said.

Is There a Privacy Risk in Google Flu Trends?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  11-17-2008    1
From the article: "But he insisted that, by highlighting the unresolved problem, Google Flu Trends made things worse. “I think this does change the game,” he said. “Google is inviting public health officials to make more of search information. In doing so, it has heightened the privacy risk to people who search for health information online.” Or perhaps it has just let people know that if they are concerned about the privacy of those searches, they should use a computer at their local library or some other place where tracking them would be harder." Maybe, it is our notion of privacy that is ought to change? after all whenever we use a new technology it bounds to use the user as well..

another example from the article: "China, which is planning a series of different virtual worlds able to host not tens but hundreds of millions of avatars. The idea is to attract people (as avatars) from around the world to come and buy Chinese goods more cheaply from source. In this way they plan to capture the value added to a shirt that leaves a Chinese factory for a dollar but is sold in London for $20."

Artists stage street scenes to lurk in Google maps
Mohir
by Mohir  11-13-2008
Like many first-time Street View users, Kinsley and Hewlett, then roommates, typed in their address and found their house. Kinsley and Hewlett soon found themselves discussing surveillance and virtual reality, and began considering how they might explore those issues and Street View through art. "But instead of dwelling on the darker undertones of these issues, we began to think about ways of playing with the system," Kinsley said in an e-mail interview from Iceland, where he is participating in an artist residency. The "Street With a View" project was his master of fine arts thesis project at Carnegie Mellon University. "We were interested in interjecting something staged, something fictional, into Street View and playing with - and subtly questioning - the notion of reality in something that we perceive as a factual representation of our world," said Kinsley, 26.

Google Maps the Flu
Rebecca Ruiz
by Rebecca Ruiz  11-12-2008    1
No doubt you've already seen this story online, but since I have a keen interest in using technology to map or graph one or more trends in a predictive or user-friendly way, I wanted to share this story about Google's Flu Trends. The web tool allows users to track flu-related searches by state to see if the flu is on the rise locally. Though this tool is in its initial stages, the idea behind it has been validated by another study showing that internet searches may correlate with flu outbreaks. Check it out here: http://www.google.org/flutrends/

Soozo is a search engine for music files across the internet. Users can search for an artist or track, and play the song directly on the site. Soozo does not host any of their music, instead it indexes publicly accessible audio files across the internet, and plays them through their own music player and gives you the option to download them for free.

Blazing speed of Internet
aklimento
by aklimento  11-5-2008    2
It can be gigabytes per second, downloading and uploading. All we going to get are good antenna and old-fashioned radio receiver for short wave signal. It means the end for cable and phone providers, information in digital form is free from noises, usual for analog broadcasting. Soon we are going to pay only for devices, which connect us to the Internet, hanging everywhere in the air. Like love in spring.;)

New Piracy Approach "Joins 'Em"
tmarch
by tmarch  11-4-2008
By digitally cataloging whole video libraries Auditude can quickly stick an ad on clipped and illegally posted videos. Contrast this with the Music Industry's punitive strategy to this one that uses the technology and users' penchant to appropriate, mash-up and share. This is a good example of investing in new thinking - who will do the same for education?

ISPs Neglect Infrastructure: Think of Capping Downloads
falconz
by falconz  11-4-2008
Articles, like this one, do not take into consideration the growing trend of multiple internet ports per home. For example, a home could have a parent on one computer downloading news videos, a child on another computer downloading Netflix or MP3s, and a third child could be on a PS3/Xbox playing online. This type of house could easily surpass the monthly limits. Additionally, bandwidth needs typically doubles every year, so one house may only need 10 GB per month now. However, next year they will likely need 20GB per month. How are placing caps going to provide ISPs with incentive to increase their infrastructure? It will not!

What a great site for word lovers. I'm a reader so often I don't ever hear the pronunciation of a word. Most I get correctly but sometimes am stumped on place names and proper names. This site is just what I was looking for . Sort of like a Wiki for talking. Click on over and check it out.
