You Have Used Me As A Fish Long Enough
WIDEEYECINEMA
by WIDEEYECINEMA  11-28-2008
In this episode, the history of brainwashing and mind control are examined. The angle pursued by Curtis was the way in which psychiatry pursued tabula rasa theories of the mind, initially in order to set people free from traumatic memories and then later as a potential instrument of social control. The work of Ewen Cameron was surveyed, with particular reference to Cold War theories of communist brainwashing and the search for hypnoprogammed assassins. The programme’s thesis was that the search for control over the past via medical intervention had had to be abandoned and that in modern times control over the past is more effectively exercised by the manipulation of history. Some film from this episode, an interview with one of Cameron’s victims, was later re-used by Curtis in his The Century of the Self.

Icelanders Attack Police Station as Bankster Plan Unfolds
sahara
by sahara  11-25-2008
Iceland is a test case for things to come. In the months ahead, the banksters and their political minions will take down fragile economies in Hungary, the Baltic States, and other Eastern European nations, followed soon enough in western Europe and the United States. Iceland is in the process of begging for assistance from the globalist loan sharking operation, the International Monetary Fund, thus setting itself up to be looted further. “We are ready to answer any demand by countries facing problems,” declared the IMF’s boss, Dominique Strauss-Kahn. “An IMF intervention in Iceland, which would necessarily involve accepting a series of harsh measures to restore fiscal and monetary stability, would underline the extraordinary reversal in the country’s fortunes after a decade-long, debt-fueled binge by the country’s banks, businesses and some private citizens.

"Jolting" the Economy by Thomas Sowell
merrie
by merrie  11-25-2008    1
No doubt we could all use a few billion dollars every now and then. But the question of who actually gets it will be strictly in the hands of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. It is one of the few parts of the legacy of the Bush administration that the Democrats are not likely to criticize. Much as we may deplore partisanship in Washington, bipartisan disasters are often twice as bad as partisan disasters-- and this is a bipartisan disaster in the making. In the light of history, this is a faith which passeth all understanding. Even in the case of the Great Depression of the 1930s, increasing numbers of economists and historians who have looked back at that era have concluded that, on net balance, government intervention prolonged the Great Depression. The Great Depression of the 1930s was in fact the longest-lasting of all our depressions.

Dieting to reduce body weight for controlling hypertension in adults.
yiduozhang
by yiduozhang  11-25-2008
OBJECTIVES: Evaluate whether weight-loss diets are more effective than regular diets or other antihypertensive therapies in controlling blood pressure and preventing morbidity and mortality in hypertensive adults. SEARCH STRATEGY: MEDLINE and The Cochrane Library were searched through November 1997. Trials known to experts in the field were included through June 1998. SELECTION CRITERIA: For inclusion in the review, trials were required to meet each of the following criteria: 1) randomized controlled trials with one group assigned to a weight-loss diet and the other group assigned to either normal diet or antihypertensive therapy; 2) ambulatory adults with a mean blood pressure of at least 140 mm Hg systolic and/or 90 mm Hg diastolic; 3) active intervention consisting of a calorie-restricted diet intended to produce weight loss (excluded studies simultaneously implementing multiple lifestyle interventions where the effects of weight loss could not be disaggregated); and 4) outcome meas

The contribution of changes in diet, exercise, and stress management to changes in coronary risk in
yiduozhang
by yiduozhang  11-24-2008
BACKGROUND: The relative contribution of health behaviors to coronary risk factors in multicomponent secondary coronary heart disease (CHD) prevention programs is largely unknown. PURPOSE: Our purpose is to evaluate the additive and interactive effects of 3-month changes in health behaviors (dietary fat intake, exercise, and stress management) on 3-month changes in coronary risk and psychosocial factors among 869 nonsmoking CHD patients (34% female) enrolled in the health insurance-based Multisite Cardiac Lifestyle Intervention Program. METHODS: Analyses of variance for repeated measures were used to analyze health behaviors, coronary risk factors, and psychosocial factors at baseline and 3 months. Multiple regression analyses evaluated changes in dietary fat intake and hours per week of exercise and stress management as predictors of changes in coronary risk and psychosocial factors. RESULTS: Significant overall improvement in coronary risk was observed. Reductions in dietary fat inta

Spy on the Streets
MsUnreliable
by MsUnreliable  11-23-2008
Spy has been a part of Madrid's street scene for many a year, having taken the path from graffiti to urban intervention. These days, the interventions are playful and subtle, teasing city dwellers into paying attention. Basketball and gardening are a couple of recurring themes, but Spy is no stranger to leaving pro-bike messages where car drivers can feel most frustrated, tying a bunch of balloons to a cow or putting "for sale" signs on churches. Lucky Madrid.

Stop Blaming Capitalism For Government Failures
merrie
by merrie  11-15-2008    3
stagnation had Americans looking for an alternative. That’s what Reagan offered, denouncing big government and promising a new “morning in America.” Under Reagan, some taxes were reduced, inflation was subdued, a few regulations were relaxed--and the economy roared back to life. But while markets were able to function to a greater degree than in the immediate past, the regulatory and welfare state remained largely untouched, with government spending continuing to increase, as well as some taxes. Later administrations were even worse. Bush Jr., often laughably called a champion of free markets, presided over massive new governmental controls like Sarbanes-Oxley and massive new welfare programs like the prescription drug benefit. None of this is consistent with capitalism. As the economic system that fully recognizes and protects individual rights, including the right to private property, capitalism means, in Ayn Rand’s words,

The Genius of Photography vs. Susan Sontag's On Photography
zizzy
by zizzy  11-10-2008    4
 |quote]Sontag argues that the proliferation of photographic practice has long begun to establish within people a "chronic voyeuristic relation" to the world around them. And that therefore the meaning of all events is somewhat leveled to an unhealthy degree. As she argues, this fosters an attitude of anti-intervention. Within this it's felt that the photographer should leave their subject, whether it be a person or an event, to its own devices while being photographed, regardless of the moral character of the subject. The justification comes in the idea that the resulting photographs will be documents, representations of events already in motion, in the name of truth and enlightenment. Sontag goes even further to say that the individual who seeks to photographically record cannot intervene, and that the person who intervenes cannot then faithfully record, for the two aims contradict each other. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/On_Photography Just something I'm pondering.

Obama Victory Alters the Tenor of Iraqi Politics
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-7-2008    1
Over all, however, there was a new tone of optimism. “The atmosphere is positive with the American attempt to preserve the sovereignty of the Iraqi nation,” the government’s spokesman, Ali al-Dabbagh, told the news channel Al Arabiya. He praised the inclusion of a new provision stating that Americans would not launch attacks on Iraq’s neighbors from Iraqi soil. “There’s going to be a significant presence, but they are not going to be ‘combat’ forces,” said the administration official. “The other thing we witnessed through the Bush period was that when the Iraqi politicians couldn’t reach a compromise, Bush interfered,” Mr. Habeeb said. “I don’t think Obama will do that; he will not try to set the Iraqi agenda,” he said. “I think the politicians will have to be mature enough to solve their own problems and dare to make compromises.”

Ahmadinejad Offers Obama Landmark Congratulations
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-6-2008
That policy, Ahmadinejad claimed, was "based on warmongering, occupation, bullying, deception and humiliation, as well as discrimination and unfair relations" and has led to "hatred of all nations and majority of governments toward the U.S. leaders." Ahmadinejad also said that Obama is expected to replace such a policy with "an approach based on justice and respect, as well as lack of intervention in the affairs of others." Iranians will welcome such changes, Ahmadinejad added. Saeed Leilaz, an independent analyst in Tehran, said Ahmadinejad's message was a "positive step" that now leaves Washington with the responsibility for the next one. Leilaz added he believes Obama's victory will "weaken radicalism" in Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and North Korea.
