Detecting Intruders on Your System Is Fun and Easy
jongkokakilima
by jongkokakilima  Today 3:39 AM
System-level intrusion detection tools differ from scanners in a couple of ways. If the IDS runs in real time, it can let you know the instant a compromise has occurred. Also, if the monitor gathers its data by reading an activity stream on the system, it can detect a range of features that a single scanner cannot. For example, scanners will not tell you that someone just entered three bad passwords and exceeded the failed login threshold.

Obama's Not ‘New’
merrie
by merrie  10-30-2008    3
from government intrusion but as the possession of goodies provided by government. “Necessitous men are not free men,” FDR proclaimed. It’s a statement Obama surely agrees with Wilson, Roosevelt and now Obama — all their ideas sprung forth from the work of John Dewey, the most important liberal philosopher of the 20th century. Dewey held that “natural rights and natural liberties exist only in the kingdom of mythological social zoology,” and that “organized social control” via a “socialized economy” was the only means to create “free” individuals. Dewey proposed that statism be taught as a kind of civic religion in our schools so that Americans could be raised to see the government as the solution to all of our problems. Ayers, now an education professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, often invokes Dewey when justifying his own dream of indoctrinating public school students in “social justice.”

Indicting the hacker who broke into Sarah Palin's private email - Harpers.org
enbar
by enbar  10-8-2008    4
The DOJ has mounted an extraordinary case against the hacker who revealed Sarah Palin's apparent systematic violation of the Open Records Act (by using a private email address to conduct government business). Given that the DOJ normally doesn't care much about cyber-crime, one has to wonder how the decision to allocate those resources was made.

Private Sector Caused This Mess, The Government Has To Get Us Out
merrie
by merrie  9-22-2008    1
from government bondage. Right. There's also a bridge to the Kremlin they'd like to sell you. Which brings us back to the current subprime mortgage crisis. When we strip away all the complexity, we discover that social planning largely led to this debacle. Government politicians and bureaucrats forced lending institutions to make un-creditworthy loans and helped create unnatural demand in the housing market by priming the pump on bad loans. I don't pretend to have enough information or expertise to know whether the Bush-Paulson bailout proposal, or some iteration of it, is necessary to avert a horrifying financial meltdown, but apparently, many experts, including conservative ones, do. Now the stability of our entire financial system is said to be at risk. It's so bad that even conservatives are considering supporting an unprecedented plan None of this would be half as troubling to me if I believed both political parties would address it in good faith.

Bailouts Represent Usurped Dictatorial Powers by Bush, Fed, and Treasury
blueridge
by blueridge  9-21-2008
Bloomberg warns, read the whole article. Bush, the Fed, the Treasury are seizing power, upon an Economic 9/11, and Congress is being coerced into immediate conformity (not wanting to take the blame for "doing nothing", while the financial companies who caused it escape accountability with free bailout) during an election season (Obama and McCain are quoted). The power is dictatorial and dangerous. It is in fact another Usurpation of power.

‘Einstein’ replaces ‘Big Brother’ in Internet surveillance

Let me guess is this in defense of 'TERROR' again right? When will this end!

Arctic Ice Pack Diminishing
papananook
by papananook  6-2-2008    2
With about a third of the world’s population—and 25 percent of Americans—living within 300 feet of an ocean coastline, sea level rise is a big deal. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, made up of leading climate scientists, sea levels have risen some 3.1 millimeters per year since 1993. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) reports that low-lying island nations, especially in equatorial regions, have been hardest hit by this phenomenon, and some are threatened with total disappearance. Rising seas have already swallowed up two uninhabited islands in the Central Pacific. On Samoa, thousands of residents have moved to higher ground as shorelines have retreated by as much as 160 feet. And islanders on Tuvalu are scrambling to find new homes as salt water intrusion has made their groundwater undrinkable while increasingly strong hurricanes and ocean swells have devastated shoreline structures.
