VFP Calls for U.S. Withdrawal From Afghanistan and the Prosecution of Dick Cheney and George Bush fo
papananook
by papananook  9-11-2008
This same resolution calls for the U.S. government to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan, in non-coercive forms, to help them rebuild their own nation and their lives in cooperation with other nations in the region; and to allow the people of Afghanistan to freely determine their own government without interference by the U.S. "These three statements from our membership represent many of the core values of our organization. We believe that service members have the right to re-evaluate their decision to kill and change their mind. We know that after all the killing is done the individual soldiers must live with themselves and make sense of what they have done. We believe that our political leaders must be held accountable for their actions. This is a critical to a healthy and functional democracy. We realize that to survive the challenges we face today, like global warming, we must find ways to work together and war is not viable." To read full text of the resolu

Israel Will Act to Prevent a Nuclear Iran
dl211
by dl211  8-18-2008
Iraq would become increasingly destabilized and the existence of the state of Israel will be directly threatened. Consider that, for many years, Iran has made no secret of its dubious long-term intentions. Israel's destruction has long been its fundamental objective. The multi-year international crisis with Iran is nearing its conclusion. Several months from now, Iran will have successfully achieved the capability to produce a nuclear weapon. Sadly, international diplomacy and an ineffective United Nations will not deter Iran from its nuclear ambition. The result is that the world is well on the path to another international military confrontation. Indeed, the ongoing threats from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad appear to leave Israel very little choice. In the next six months, Israel will act to prevent a nuclear Iran.

Yellowcake Not 'A Vindication' of Bush's WMD Claims
Wisco
by Wisco  8-3-2008
It should be pointed out (as I've been forced to several times around the web) that yellowcake is not WMD. In fact, it's not even refined. The piece goes on: But this particular stock of uranium was not recently discovered — and it was no secret. It had been stored in sealed containers, since before the first Gulf War, according to the AP. Saddam Hussein was forced to allow United Nations inspectors into Iraq in 1991, as part of the cease-fire that ended the first Gulf War. The U.N. Security Council's agreement required Hussein to dismantle Iraq's weapons of mass destruction, in exchange for lifting the 1990 economic sanctions imposed on Iraq. The inspectors monitored Iraq's disarmament, and later guarded this uranium. More recently, U.S. and Iraqi forces have been guarding it, since Iraqis looted the site after Hussein’s fall from power.

US to Iran in "Diplomacy": Two Weeks to Comply
blueridge
by blueridge  7-21-2008
Just as we posted earlier, playing diplomatic "good cop" is just a nicer face with a club in his belt. The exact same tactic was used with Saddam leading up to the Iraq war, even though he could not prove to them he had no WMD, because you cannot disprove a mere suspicion or a lying accusation.

US and Iran "Diplomacy" Starts--"Good Cop" Tactic
blueridge
by blueridge  7-19-2008
But coercing Iran to stop its nuclear enrichment program is the goal. So earlier we saw "bad cop" war games and rhetoric by US and Israel, and now this multinational "diplomacy" will play "good cop", to force the will of the US and Israel on Iran. That is not diplomacy, and the shift is temporary, for the election season. The result (which might be a goal too) will be that the oil traders will sell and lower oil prices will come (as they already did on first news of this), and this game will probably be played between now and Nov. 5th (to help McCain), and then the war-mongering will start again, and possibly an attack by Israel ( per neocon John Bolton's clipmark earlier ) to force the next President's hand into the conflict. Bush does not change from his neocon advisers blueprint. This pragmatism is for political expediency and economic benefit for election season purposes.

Understanding the full cost of a nuclear power plan
deb2012
by deb2012  7-12-2008
History has taught us that civilian nuclear programs can -- and do -- lead to the production of nuclear weapons as happened in India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea. The presence of nuclear power plants has provoked acts of aggression, even war. Israel bombed nuclear facilities in Iraq and Syria. The U.S. went to war in Iraq at least on the pretext that the country was developing nuclear weapons. The concerns surrounding Iran's nuclear intentions are indicative of the blurred line between civilian and military nuclear activities. Iran's uranium enrichment program has inspired 14 other Middle Eastern countries to express an interest in acquiring nuclear power programs, a poorly-disguised cover story for nuclear weapons posturing.

About That 550 Tons Of Yellow Cake
merrie
by merrie  7-11-2008
Had the United States not invaded Iraq in 2003, that 550 metric tons of yellow cake would have remained physically within Saddam's sphere of influence. Again, perhaps that would not bother some, but in light of 9/11, it bothered many Americans, including President Bush. Yellow cake is a very dangerous substance, which can be converted to WMD with the right equipment and technology. To believe that Saddam Hussein lacked the ability or motivation to acquire and perfect the equipment for production of nuclear WMD is, in my opinion, foolhardy and naive. Those who believe that presence of IAEA inspectors assured that the yellow cake was controlled and adequately protected from diversion can explore the facts: Those who wish to explore the facts further should Goggle "IAEA effectiveness in Iraq" to glean more information, which includes, in part, the following report from the Nuclear Control Institute (http://www.nci.org/new/iraq-ib.htm):

Did Valerie Plame Wilson Commit Perjury?
merrie
by merrie  7-8-2008    2
But, that is no excuse for the Valerie Wilson-Plame to sit in front of a Congressional Committee and LIE like she did. This is what Valerie Plame said sworn testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform: Plame also testified that she played no part in deciding to send her husband, former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, on a mission to Niger in 2002 to assess the reliability of reports that Iraq's then-president, Saddam Hussein, was trying to buy yellowcake uranium from that country for use in a secret nuclear weapons program. Some CPD officials could not recall how the office decided to contact the former ambassador, however, interviews and documents provided to the Committee indicate that his wife, a CPD employee, suggested his name for the trip. The CPD reports officer told Committee staff that the former ambassador's wife "offered up his name" and a memorandum to the Deputy Chief of the CPD on February 12, 2002.

It Must Suck Being Joseph "Yellow-Cake" Wilson IV Now!
merrie
by merrie  7-8-2008    5
In his speech, Ambassador Joseph Wilson described himself as the investigator sent to Niger by the government and says the government sent him there and not the CIA (a lie). Wilson said there was nothing to the uranium story (another lie), described the US as "occupiers" of Iraq (a shocking statement at the time), and described a conspiracy to help Israel dominate the Palestinians. Joe Wilson repeated the lie for several years that the Iraq was not seeking uranium from Niger even though five days after Wilson's NYT op-ed, George Tenet put out a statement describing how the person the CIA sent to check out the Niger story (Joe Wilson) found that the Iraqis had indeed tried to open up trade talks, which were interpretted by government officials in Niger as an attempt to purchase uranium ore. The Health Effects of Special Weapons Fallout
blueridge

Largely about depleted uranium, which effects Vets as well as Iraqis, and the military knew in advance because of Gulf War I. Again, lack of any concern about innocent victims of an unjust war. The mentality of Americans in 2002 before the war was, "so what...they deserve it, nuke 'em, because they are terrorists". Jessica Lynch had that mentality about all Iraqis after her return, even though an Iraqi saved her life. Even after the war started the U.S. was fighting "terrorists" in Iraq, a totally untrue statement. Sick, it's just sick. For every US soldier that suffers from this, there are thousands of Iraqis. For a documentary on Gulf War illnesses and depleted uranium see here. Every Gulf war vet should see this.

Bush Talks of Another 9/11, Points to Pakistan
blueridge
by blueridge  4-15-2008    1
Assigning blame to a particular country in advance is not only suspicious, but it suggests that a new war theatre is about to open. Ironically, the Pakistani ISI wired $100,000 to Mohammad Attah (one of the key patsies used for 9/11 blame, without evidence) just prior to 9/11. Who wants to wager if another "catalyzing event, like a new Pearl Harbor" will happen before Bush leaves office and before the November elections? It would be too convenient, and benefit only the neocon war agenda. "Motive, means, opportunity" are the key considerations for determining who is behind an event. Israel and the neocons would benefit most and have more means and opportunity, and the ability to cast blame through well placed propagandists into the MSM--just as they benefited most from 9/11, to execute their blueprint for a "new middle east" via "regime change".

Let’s not quibble about the lack of water and electricity for the Iraqis, or the devastating shortages of doctors and medical supplies. And, luckily, a blown up bus or marketplace here or there is hardly newsworthy. Not a word in the establishment media about the daily killings or kidnappings you’ve set in motion all these years. Hey, the networks deserve a hand here. Almost three quarters of Americans believe that you’ve caused the deaths of only three thousand American troops. Hard to believe, but they’ve inadvertently written off the lives of a thousand young soldiers and marines. Hell, ignorance is bliss. Party on. And best of all, your coalition of intimidated allies has all but disappeared. Your illegal, immoral and ugly war is largely a private affair now, George. Enjoy. We’d love to see the guest list, George. Surely an annive

UN Imposes New Sanctions on Iran--Increases Conflict
blueridge
by blueridge  3-3-2008
As Ron Paul warns UN sanctions are a pathway to wars, and always the new justifications for them, as was the case with Iraq. The UN is not "moderate", or a world savior, it is an arbitrary usurping world governing body stacked with the "powers that be" moving all toward world conformity by either incentive or force. Since the UN was formed, after the WWI League of Nations failed, wars and global conflicts have increased, not decreased. The UN is nothing less than a global "gang" teaming up to suppress and usurp all sovereign rule under the pretense of "democracy" and "world peace", and its tenants are entirely supported by the Bush family and neocons, while their tactics may differ. To suggest that only "UN approved" nations can have nuclear power, even weapons, makes clear their goal of global dominance, as if their ideological dictatorial rule is not tyrannical in nature.

Nuclear Israel Likely to Attack Iran on False Claims
blueridge
by blueridge  11-8-2007    15
Israel possesses a nuclear arsenal supplied by the U.S.. Iran does not. Israel has attacked Lebanon and Syria. Iran has never attacked anyone. The U.S. has attacked two countries. Iran is developing nuclear power, not nuclear weapons. Iran has a right to self defense. Iran has never threatened to militarily attack Israel, only rejected the political legitimacy of the Zionist state arbitrarily carved out of Palestine by the UN under pressure of WWII. (Erased from a political map, not bombed into annihilation). Yet the corporate media does not want you to know these naked facts, but fully supports the Israeli, neoconservative, Bush-Cheney rhetoric of Iran starting a "nuclear holocaust"--a pack of blatant lies just like WMD in Iraq. Israel it appears will start this war, and the neocon Bush-Cheney administration wants them to before their term is up. War time always has improved political ratings also and could give the neo-republicans a boost over Ron Paul and the rest.

Seven Bad Assumptions We Make About Iran

Continuation: 1. Iran is ripe for regime change. Not true. 2. Iran is irrational and cannot be deterred. Not true. 3. Iran is inherently anti-American. Not quite. 4. Enrichment equals a nuclear bomb. Not necessarily. 5. Iran seeks Israel's destruction. False. 6. The pressure on Iran is working. Questionable. 7. Stability in the Middle East can be achieved only through Iran's isolation. Quite the contrary. Iran poses a complicated challenge to America, but not an irresolvable one. Despite the tremendous distrust between the two countries, history shows that negotiations can work. In 2001 Tehran and Washington worked closely together to defeat the Taliban and install a new government in Afghanistan. Without Iranian help, the new Constitution of Afghanistan would not have been achieved, according to U.S. diplomats involved in the effort.
