In food crisis, Cuba limits sales so all can eat
Lexica
by Lexica  Today 6:26 PM
It would seem obvious: better to have everybody be a little bit hungry than to have some people well-fed while others are starving. When it comes to food policy, there's a lot we could learn from Cuba.

Parental Alienation Syndrome, the Other Side of the Story
Delilah1234
by Delilah1234  Today 3:39 PM
The so-called Parental Alienation Syndrome, touted by many in the Rhode Island Family Court, has been discredited by the American Psychological Association and, recently, by both the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges and the Children’s Legal Rights Journal.

Canon supports secret garden in urban jungle to Greenwash their waste
rachaelkeriwilliams
by rachaelkeriwilliams  10-7-2008
example of public-private partnership to support a local community garden in NYC. This is a call for community participation. Canon partnered with the American Park Network to offset their carbon with the purchase of trees. The APN then donates trees to local parks and works with community groups to plant them. It would be a cool deal, but it's not much coming from canon. Not while they continue to produce highly wasteful print cartridges, and as far as I can see still haven't come out with a refillable cartridge. Canon is so so NOT GREEN!

Simple Low-Tech Home Wins Prize For Sustainability
merrie
by merrie  10-5-2008    3
Woodruff's house uses just 25% of the energy of a conventional house of the same size. His winter power costs are a $30 electricity bill each month and a cord of wood. In the summer, power is needed only for the hot water heater and appliances. Yet the little 1,100-sq.-ft. house is as straightforward as you can get. No high-tech gizmos. No elaborate contortions. The house relies on simple architectural principles -- windows oriented for sunlight, cross breezes for ventilation, overhangs for shade -- basics that were much lauded in the 1940s and '50s, but less emphasized since. They included large doors that can be opened for cross-breezes. They designed the heating so energy is used and reused within rooms. The living/ dining/kitchen area is one big room heated by a wood stove on rainy days, and the sun on sunny days. "The public rooms face east, the logic being you want those to heat up with the sun first in the winter and in the summer, you want to avoid the hot western sun.

Senate Passes Pork-Stuffed Bailout Bill
blueridge
by blueridge  10-2-2008    1
Oink, Oink! Your Senate at work, stuffing ear-marks into the "must pass" financial bailout bill. They all lined up. This by itself should make it very tempting to reject by republicans. Yet the hypocrite McCain, as well as Obama, supports it, (and Bush would sign it), even though it will NOT FIX THE PROBLEM, BUT EXACERBATE IT (according to economists who know), and put all Americans and the federal government on the hook for the about a TRillion Dollars in new debt, transferring bad debt from Wall Street to Main Street. Even more sickening about all this is that both McCain and Obama support this balderdash. It favors Obama as he wants more government spending and government control. This however flies in the face of what McCain has been saying that he will veto earmarks and pork barrel spending. THE HOUSE SHOULD REJECT THIS. CALL THEM!
