POPSRussian Gulag Writer Alexander Solzhenitsen Dies At 89
"His intransigence, his ideals and his long, eventful life make of Solzhenitsyn a storybook figure, heir to Dostoyevsky. He belongs to the pantheon of world history. I pay homage to his memory." Born to a single mother in 1918 at Kislovodsk in the Caucasus amid the bloody aftermath of the Russian Revolution, Solzhenitsyn was initially a loyal Communist. But he went on to undermine the regime's moral foundations, his writings energizing dissent at home and in the West. First though he had to enter the living hell of the Gulag, a vast prison system that stretched from the Solovetsky Islands in the White Sea to the steppes of Kazakhstan. Solzhenitsyn was sentenced to eight years in the camps in 1945 and was to go on to survive cancer and a KGB assassination attempt. He was released in February 1953, a few weeks before Stalin's death. He spent three more years in internal exile in Kazakhstan, contracted and overcame cancer. "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" 1962

POPSBush's Letter Puts Putin In A Good Mood
Two Cold War-era agreements -- The Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, which Russia suspended last year, and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which expires next year -- will also be addressed. A source in the Defense Ministry said progress was only likely if Rice and Gates "bring with them new proposals that take into account Moscow's concerns," Itar-Tass reported. But the Pentagon's Morrell reiterated on the sidelines of Monday's meeting that nothing new was on the table. "We come armed with no new proposals," he said, adding that the purpose of this visit was to demonstrate that the United States planned to "stand by its proposals. We are not going to sweeten them." Putin's guardedly positive statement Monday came in contrast to efforts by both sides ahead of the talks to dampen expectations for any significant progress on the missile-defense issue. U.S. officials stressed that they would not make any new offers, while Moscow said new overtures were necessa

POPS Russia Violates Japanese Airspace The BBC reports that Putin's Kremlin is pressing ahead with its plan to alienate and provoke every single country on the planet, leaving Russia utterly alone in the world Japan responded by scrambling 22 jets and lodging an official protest with the Russian embassy. But a spokesman for the Russian air force denied any incursion into Japanese airspace had occurred. Alexander Drobyshevsky told Russia's Itar-Tass news agency that strategic bomber flights had been "carried out in strict accordance with international rules on flying over neutral waters, without violating the border between the two countries.

POPSTwo Russian strategic bombers fly along Alaska, Canada coasts
"Russia resumed patrolling by long-range aviation in remote areas after a 17-year pause, per decision by the supreme commander-in-chief, President Vladimir Putin. Russian long-range aircraft have flown to the air space of remote areas several times in the past two months. In mid-July, four Tu-95MS bombers flew through the air space near Great Britain. Their flight provoked numerous comments in British media outlets, because it coincided with the diplomatic row over the expulsion of four British diplomats. In early August, two Russian strategic bombers flew to the U.S. base Guam in the Pacific Ocean. As a rule, the flights by Russian long-range aviation are accompanied by NATO fighter jets which are watching the Russian bombers. Earlier on Thursday, Drobyshevsky said more than 90 planes and helicopters were involved in a tactical exercise of the far eastern Air Force and Air Defense formation. "The far eastern Air Force and Air Defense formation has detailed mor

The world is polarising again, thanks to U.S. government's aggressive stupidity.

POPSRussia reaffirms one-China policy This is all getting worse. Now Russia is forking 2 ways - talking to Hamas and now siding with China on the Taiwan problem. It seems Putin is trying to start trouble for whatever reason. It is a shame as I like the people of Russia. Why does the government now decide to try to drive people to war. Same for China - the people are good -- the government however sucks. Wait....all governments seem to be a pain in the ass. Power to the People......
