POPSVatican Forgives John Lennon for Jesus Quip I smile at the idea of John Lennon entertaining JC with some tunes written by he and Yoko. And I wonder at their reaction to the earthly news. No bloody idea, these Catholics. Do they think John is in limbo (which apparently was destroyed by the pope not so long ago because of the cruelty to parents by denying the infant access to the after life with adults) awaiting this statement to get out of jail.

POPSBurma Comic Jailed For 45 years At the time, he seemed to think the government would have no problem with his activities. "No, we never encounter any problems, because we negotiated with them, and we just want to pass our donation parcels. We just want to encourage our people - this is our duty," he told the BBC in an interview just before his arrest. Our correspondent says such breathtakingly disproportionate punishments send two clear messages from the generals who rule Burma: that they will brook no opposition in the lead-up to their carefully managed transition to what they are calling a "discipline-flourishing democracy"; and that they are unconcerned what the rest of the world thinks.

POPSUproar As Top Police Cleared of Attack on Genoa G8 Protesters At least 150 police officers stormed the Armando Diaz school on the night of July 21 2001, after three days of violence in Genoa that left more than 200 people injured and a protester dead. Police chiefs later claimed the school was occupied by the violently disruptive Black Bloc faction. If that is what rank-and-file officers were told, it may explain the viciousness with which they laid into the protesters. Briton Nicola Doherty was hit so hard on an arm with which she was shielding her face that her wrist was broken. The attack put 28 of 93 people arrested in hospital - three of them on the critical list. Mark Covell, a volunteer with the Indymedia news network, was unconscious for 14 hours. He suffered eight broken ribs, a punctured lung and 10 missing or broken teeth.

POPSRubin-Enron-Citi-One more reborn savior??Not! (Recall this from 2002) "But the Democrats have been unsure about whether to pursue the investigation into the political realm. Part of this timidity is a desire to avoid the appearance of partisan excess that, in the Clinton scandals, drew a backlash against the Republicans. But they are undoubtedly afraid that some of their own luminaries, Rubin chief among them, might end up on the wrong side of a subpoena. It would be a shame if these fears, and the media's reluctance to pursue these issues independently, kept the public from learning the truth about the political corruption involved in Enron's rise and decline."

POPSWhy conservatism's traditionalists are so mean First paragraph is from David Brooks, who laments that traditionalists may well take over the GOP; balance is for Ed Kilgore, who observes that they have come to believe their own militant mythology, and have become impervious to contrasting information. Both agree that this - while ugly - could seal the fate of the GOP.

POPSEmail President Bush To Grant Executive Pardon To Border Agents for drug smuggling. The Washington Times quotes T. J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, as being critical with the timing of the indictment against Aldrete Davila. "Osvaldo Aldrete Davila should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for these felonies two years ago," said Mr. Bonner, whose group represents more than 12,000 Border Patrol agents. "This deliberate and unconscionable delay directly resulted in the wrongful incarceration of two innocent law-enforcement officers." According to Drug Enforcement Administration documents obtained by The Times, DEA investigators believed they had sufficient evidence to indict Aldrete Davila in late 2005, but their requests to do so were denied by Mr. Sutton's office.

POPSIraqi War Veteran - Gun in One Hand and a Flag in the Other Police waited patiently while the gunman hung the American flag and an Obama Poster on the Freeway overpass. Then he went to jail. He won't get to vote in jail. Media coverage was nearly absent. Would it have gotten more coverage if he put up a McCain poster?
