Tough Times: Congress Grew 13 Percent Richer In 2007
merrie
by merrie  11-14-2008    1
Rep Robin Hayes, R-N.C., ranks third, with $173.4 million. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., ranks sixth, with $62 million. In the Senate, the two Democrats from Massachusetts claimed two of the top three spots. Sen. John Kerry led the pack, with $336 million, while Sen. Edward M. Kennedy ranked third, with $104 million. Sen. Herb Kohl, D-Wis., ranked second, with $241.5 million. Overall, senators had a median net worth estimated at $1.7 million. The 535 members of Congress, who earn average annual salaries of $169,000 and receive cost-of-living pay increases, had a total net worth of $3.7 billion last year. Although some are likely to take a hit from Wall Street's woes, their average net worth soared by 61 percent from 2004 to 2007. Obama ranked as one of the biggest financial winners, with his net worth increasing from $800,000 in 2006 to $4.7 million last year McCain estimated at $28.5 million wealth attributed to his wife Cindy's family fortune.

Trock (Timelord Rock)
cakebelly
by cakebelly  11-14-2008
continues: The band also has a new song called "Exterminate Regenerate" - it's got a synth flair and is actually quite a bit better than "Blink." You can hear it on the band's MySpace page. What can we expect next from Trock? Hopefully a huge upswelling of tragic tales of love and betrayal featuring the Master, along with some angry breakup songs from Sarah Jane. I am prepared to fully back this awesome new trend, as long as nobody spins it off into Twock - you know, Torchwood rock. I am not ready to face that quite yet. Thanks, Ria! California economy loses $28 billion yearly to health effects of pollution
Kelika
by Kelika  11-13-2008
Considered the most lethal form of air pollution, microscopic particulates expelled from tailpipes, factory smoke stacks, diesel trucks and equipment can penetrate through the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Exposure to these fine particles has been linked to severe asthma, cancer and premature deaths from heart and lung disease. "In the South Coast basin, an average 64% of the population is exposed to health-endangering annual averages of particulates," Hall said, "and in the most populated county -- Los Angeles -- it is 75%. "In most years, the South Coast and San Joaquin basins vie with the Houston, Texas, area for the worst air pollution trophy, but this year we took it back," she said. "That's not a prize you want to be handed. Essentially, imported T-shirts and tennis shoes are being hauled to Omaha and the big-rig diesel pollution stays here."

CA Air Pollution Deadlier Than Traffic Accidents
Wisco
by Wisco  11-13-2008
The study found that the California Highway Patrol recorded 2,521 vehicular deaths in the San Joaquin Valley and South Coast Air Basin in 2006, compared to 3,812 deaths attributed to respiratory illness caused by particulate pollution. "It may be tempting to think California can't afford to clean up, but in fact dirty air is like a $28 billion lead balloon on our economy," Hall said.

What will the Obama's First Actions Be?
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  11-5-2008
I love the first pic. on this page (wouldn't clip) What will the Obama White House Be Like? IMO (and some others) Very, very slow and careful; methodical General Petraeus has already been order to start withdrawing troops from Iraq. (in Obama's Victory Speech) All parties will be included in the Administration and others, these folks will be given orders to accomplish things. His brass knuckles just announced Chief of Staff (Ron Emanuel) will frequently go over to the Democratic Congress and beat their brains out and kick their ass until they do what Obama wants. With Democrats having a majority in both Houses legislation will quickly pass and there will be no filibusters because Obama will get 8 or 9 Republicans to go along with him. Pakistan will either kill or deliver bin Laden or agree to let a strike team of Special Forces in to get him ourselves; or we will go in whether Pakistan likes it or not. A massive program for alternative energy will begin.

Christian Right Influence on USA Politics
devans00
by devans00  10-28-2008    1
It all started when Ronald Reagan courted the religious right in his bid to win the Presidency. Now it's come to Christian leaders who use millions in tax-free donations to try to influence nominations for the Supreme Court and to subvert the First Amendment separation of church and State. It's a mutual back scratching society.

RNC Puts Palin on Fashion Welfare; Palin Goes Wild
blueridge
by blueridge  10-24-2008    5
Republicans give Clothing-Stamps to Palin and family. Palin uses it at Neiman Mark-Ups. What hypocrisy. Talk about Socialism! She cannot afford her own clothes? They are millionaires! Meet the real Jane six-pack. Still think she is "conservative" fiscally? Take a look at the itemized bills. Spends like a "liberal" doesn't she? I wonder how people who donated to the RNC feel about this spending of their contributions? Just another example of Palin's principles, she will accept charity and handouts from others. Really, how did she talk the RNC into this? Or did they want her to get a "makeover" in fashion? I wonder how much they paid for her hair do-over. Question: If Palin was a man running for VP, would he get this treatment? Not a chance. So this policy is sexist too.

Champagne & Lobster For Me, But Not For Thee
merrie
by merrie  10-20-2008    3
And in this anxious climate, here’s Barack, boasting about collecting $150 million dollars from the pockets of (presumably) middle America. While America watches Barack spend money at a historically obscene pace — on several multi-million dollar 30-minute infomercials in an attempt to buy the votes of the bitter people, for example. Where Did All That Cash Come From? AxelBama goofed. This is not a PR positive. Apparently John McCain is on the same wavelength. On FOX News Sunday, he said that Obama’s fundraising is… “completely breaking whatever idea we had after Watergate to keep the cost and spending on campaigns under control. First time, first time since the Watergate scandal. And I can tell you this: that has unleashed now in presidential campaigns a new flood of spending that will then cause a scandal and then we will fix it again. But Sen. Obama has broken it.”

“In some cases, it appears bottled water is no less polluted than tap water and, at 1,900 times the cost, consumers should expect better,” said Jane Houlihan, an environmental engineer who co-authored the study.

I have been, as I may have mentioned looking through the Dear Jane blocks various groups of Janiacs have posted on Flickr. The two largest groups are the Dear Janes and Dear Baby Jane (http://www.flickr.com/groups/dearbabyjane/). It is amazing how many blocks these ladies have created.I am in awe of them. I admired one particular member and found her blog. She has some history of her Dear Jane work, a link to which is below.
