POPSOpen Letter to Senator John McCain Let's talk about another POW: Floyd James Thompson. Outside of the military, and even inside, I doubt there are few that have ever heard of him. (Read this book for a full history) He was the longest held POW in US History, just 10 days short of 9 years in captivity during the Vietnam War. He was a pilot and shot down just like you, Senator McCain. Why has the general public never heard of him and his sacrifice on behalf of the nation though? I guess its because he never used his experience for personal gain or notoriety. His story is much sadder actually. After his release, his marriage fell apart, he developed a drinking problem, and eventually suffered a massive heart attack. He represented the plight of so many POW's, he suffered silently, forgotten by a country trying to heal the still open wounds from the Vietnam War.

POPSThe joke is finally on Obama Craig Ferguson: "Barack Obama was in Germany" today, and "he did this speech and 100,000 people showed up. There were so many Germans shouting and screaming that France...surrendered just in case."

POPSParis To "White-Haired Dude" --- "What Ever" Most astonishing of all, Big Media (the broadcast and cable networks, The Associated Press and major newspapers) continue their near-total blackout of reporting on a story that broke in the National Enquirer on July 22, well before we went on vacation -- where the tabloid's reporters and a photographer staked out a Los Angeles hotel where former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards allegedly visited his rumored mistress. You can read or hear all about it in the British press, online bloggers, Internet Web sites (including the Huffington Post and most exhaustively on Mickey Kaus' blog), the usual right-wing radio suspects. Even late night comics like Jay Leno are starting to joke about it. But don't expect a word of it to pass the lips of Brian Williams, Charlie Gibson or Katie Couric. POPSToby Keith: Obama Talks, Acts and Carries Himself as a Caucasian So it seems that the idea of "acting white" isn't confined to blacks. midknightryder13 commented at Huffington Post: n the musical "My Fair Lady" (and for that matter 'Pygmalion', the play on which it is based) -- Henry Higgins laments "Why Can't the English Learn How to Speak." The point of the song (and for that matter the premise of the play) is that the way one carries oneself and speaks is indicative of one's social class. However, Toby Keith has apparently fallen in with the incorrect assumption that class divisions are solely a function of ethnicity. Such treacle. BO is carrying himself and acting as befits someone who has been educated at Harvard. Speaking 'proper English', carrying himself with bearing and dignity. That's not 'white' -- that's IVY LEAGUE! Gee, a HARVARD GRADUATE 'acting' like he's Ivy League. Go figure.

POPSJay Leno Impersonates Kimmel Impersonating A Reporter Show business is all about one-upping the competition. Last week at press tour, Jimmy Kimmel posed as a reporter demanding answers from ABC President of Entertainment Steve McPherson about the fate of his late-night show. Although McPherson says he is committed to Kimmel, whose show took off with viewers this year, he also pointed out last week that there could be room for both late-night hosts at his network. Not so fast, said Graboff Monday, adding that NBC Universal is still talking to Leno about staying at the company in a different capacity. “When we made the deal with Jay four years ago, we made a long-term deal with him,” Graboff said. “We’ve been talking to him pretty much that whole time about the future beyond the ‘Tonight Show.’ We can’t force him to do something. We’re presenting him with a number of opportunities that we think will be great and we’re hoping that he eventually thinks will be great as well.”

POPS"Late Night" Successor Will Debut On The Web So many "viewers" of late night TV actually catch clips of the shows via youtube or other video services in the days following broadcast. So launching a new late night host this way makes a lot of sense.

POPSTV Dads I definitely agree with this letter writer. The relationship between Jim Rockford and his dad, "Rocky" was one of the most realistic and touching ever on TV. And the fact that it was the same in real life made it almost unique. A beautiful thing, on screen AND off.

POPSGas Prices Are Changing Americans’ Priorities would make developing the oil shale profitable at $20 a barrel. Are liberals in Congress anxious to see this oil help American consumers? No. Just last week they voted to extend their ban on oil shale development. The other liberal objection to increased domestic energy production is that the additional supplies will not affect prices for a decade. We will let Jay Leno respond: “Democrats said it would not do any good because it would not produce oil for 10 years. You know, same thing they said 10 years ago.” Just last week liberals in Congress rejected a proposal to allow drilling for oil 50 miles of the U.S. coast. The U.S. Minerals Management Service estimates that 86 billion barrels of oil and 420 trillion cubic feet of natural gas can be found along the U.S. outer continental shelf. The typical liberal response to calls for more domestic oil production is that drilling will not help lower prices significantly.

POPSJay Leno Apologizes for An Insensitive Remark Jay does have a rather snarky sense of humour, but I have never known him to be anti-gay or homophobic in any manner whatsoever. But his snarkiness caught up with him while trying to go for the quick joke. However, he paid for it by the reaction from not only his guest, but the entire audience as well. At least the man had the balls to apologize.
