Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  10-17-2008    3
There was nothing in the hotel archives to document what had been found. But this 1927 photograph, which originally appeared in Architecture magazine, proved to be a visual Rosetta stone. Mr. Littler found it in "Grand Hotels of the Jazz Age: The Architecture of Schultze & Weaver," published four years ago by Princeton Architectural Press.

Viktor Schreckengost
mickfinn
by mickfinn  2-3-2008
Vicktor Schreckengost (1906-2008) died on January 26, 2008 at age 101. Schreckengost taught industrial design at the Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) for more than 50 years, and was a professor emeritus at CIA until his death. He was also the youngest faculty member ever at CIA (then known as the Cleveland School of the Arts). He founded CIA's school of industrial design, the first of its kind in the country. He also enlisted in the Navy at age 37 to help the Allies in World War II. He was flown on secret missions to Europe where he used his modeling knowledge to help improve the radar used in the Battle of the Bulge. Later he helped design prosthetics for wounded soldiers. He retired from the Naval Reserves as a Captain. Schreckengost was also good friends with Cleveland's famed safety director Eliot Ness.

"Will these guys catch you?", "Sure Honey, they're kids"
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  12-21-2007
More: "At 82 she was cartwheeling across the stage and being tossed from the arms of a 60-year-old male dancer to another who was 70," Le Maire recalled of her mother. "I said, 'Mom, are you sure these guys are going to catch you?' She said, 'Sure, honey. They're kids.' "

Western Standards Of Beauty: A Timeline
LittleRedRidingHood
by LittleRedRidingHood  11-12-2007    4
Hard to believe as it seems, thin wasn't always in. There are centuries of documentation of female beauty, and except for ours, the trend is fairly consistant: beautiful women are shapely, soft, and rounded. What a contrast is that idea to our current ideal - the waif-like figure introduced by Twiggy and popularized by the likes of Kate Moss! This timeline is an illustrated journey through the last 600 years, from the portraits of the European Renaissance to red-carpet photos of modern celebrities. Take time to study each picture as you scroll. What would our society today say to these women about their bodies? And, perhaps more importantly, what would these women have to say to us?
