POPSA country's productivity increase as its gender gap narrows 3. The greater standing women have, the more everyone benefits: Industrialized countries can still grow their economies substantially by elevating women. Closing the employment gender gap "would have huge economic implications for the developed economies, boosting US GDP by as much as 9%, Eurozone GDP by as much as 13% and Japanese GDP by as much as 16%," according to the report

POPSEarth on course for eco 'crunch' This problem is being pushed to the side by economic problems by governments. Spend the way out of trouble building jobs in a more environmentally friendly framework. Provide the retraining needed desperately by those thrown out of work, and give it sensibly.

POPSMostly awesome Ambitious. Assertive. Dominant. Disciplined. Okay, those are nice traits, and six-digit-income is nice, too (as long as "economic leveling" doesn't rape it out of my wallet). I'm not crazy about 60% of the "Famous Firstborns" though. Oprah and the Clintons? Oh well, the greatness of Winston Churchill and Sylvester Stallone balance the socialists out.

POPSCitizen Journalism And Steve Jobbs It is simply silly to decry "citizen journalism" because one "citizen journalist" got the story wrong, intentionally or otherwise. Actually, the term "citizen journalism" is silly. It is a way for big media to differentiate themselves from the "citizens". People say things on the street. People say things in their home, at work, on the train, and in email, Twitter and on their blogs. This is all information. The fact that it continues to be necessary to think about what you hear and run it through filters is no different for any information source. I certainly would never take a CNN, or Fox or MSNBC news story as gospel. Would you?

POPSJob Losses Highest in Five Years Why is it that what invariably seems to trickle down from trickle-down economic practices is high unemployment? Could it be that the tricklers tend to hoard and offshore wealth instead of investing it in industries that hire people into good paying jobs?

POPSJobless claims at 7-year high How could anyone vote for 4 more years of it? Republican policies get thousands of our soldiers killed, push jobs overseas, devalue US international influence, prevent millions of us from getting medical treatment, devastate our economy - and half our voters limp to the polls to beg for more.

POPSiPhone Firmware 2.2 Beta - New Features Revealed "Most surprising is that fact that background push notification is absent in beta 1 builds. The feature was promised for September but was pushed back according to an email purportedly from Steve Jobs that said: “We want to get it 100% right the first time.” Even worse. No copy and paste."

POPS ACORN's Radical Anti-Capitalism Agenda ......millions of low-income residents of cities pay excessively high prices for consumer goods in part because of a lack of competition. The report noted that in Chicago "higher priced, small grocery stores" are concentrated in the city's poorer neighborhoods—exactly the kind of place where big-box stores now want to open. Far from rejecting these stores, inner-city residents have embraced them. Thousands of local residents showed up to apply for jobs when Wal-Mart announced it was opening a new store in an abandoned former Macy's outlet in the Baldwin Hills section of Los Angeles. After the store opened in 2003, sales soared at the mall were the Wal-Mart was located and other national retailers moved into the predominantly black neighborhood, vastly improving the range of products offered to residents.

POPSVicente Fox Tells American Workers To “Get Over It” An interview with EX president of Mexico Vicente Fox at Wayne State University September 12, 2008 where he tells American workers to “get over it”, that their jobs are gone forever and that they must retrain for GLOBAL work. The news report also calmly mentions that he wants a North American Union (you know, that thing that doesn’t exist) and a single Amero currency.. Jobs are lost -- North American Union.. two things the busy admin says isn't happening!! Just like the Trans Continental Hwy which is in the works. People Dem or Reb. its time to realize that our Govt. Isn't for us (yes both sides of the parties) They are selling us out to the lowest bidder and antagonizing every country in the process that will lead to WW3... Meanwhile those we put into power have enough money to go elsewhere!! We will be the third world nation the bankers are striving for!!

POPSWhat Happens When You Don't Build Power Plants But Britain will be green, green, green. Of course lots of that will be because people will have to start crapping in their backyards - but think of the wonderful flowers that will grow. And the huge increase in green jobs (making candles, digging up peat to burn for heat, etc.) will more than offset the loss caused by going back to 19th century technology.

POPSAustralia 'stalling' due to innovation neglect Successive govts in Australia have forced our leading thinkers/researchers/scientists out to England and America. They have also ignored the census and allowed shortfalls to happen in nursing and teaching, let alone jobs requiring higher qualifications. All visions for the future were just that, visions.

POPSThe Return of the Robber Barons Another deceit is the measure called “core inflation.” This measure of inflation excludes food and energy, two large components of the average family’s budget. Wall Street and corporations and, therefore, the media emphasize core inflation, because it holds down cost of living increases and interest rates. In the second quarter of this year, the Consumer Price Index (CPI), a more complete measure of inflation, increased at an annual rate of 5.2 per cent compared to 2.3 per cent for core inflation. An examination of how inflation is measured quickly reveals the games played to deceive the American people. Housing prices are not in the index. Instead, the rental rate of housing is used as a proxy for housing prices. More games are played with the goods and services whose prices comprise the weighted market basket used to estimate inflation. If beef prices rise, for example, the index shifts toward lower priced chicken.

POPSUntouched forests are carbon warriors. The trouble with plantation forests is that there is more to a forest than trees. The trouble with the trees in the untouched forests, is that their wood is becoming so expensive. There's so much less of it. One of the biggest 'justifications' for cutting down old growth forests is that it provides jobs a few hundred or illegal logging because cutting down a few trees beats working in the field all year. We don't know how to rebuild an eco-system, and we're throwing away the templates.

POPSWhat's Going Up? Unemployment! It's a staple of supply side economic propaganda that the lagging indicators of slashing taxes (mostly for the rich) are wage increases and job growth. Well, the Bush-GOP tax cuts didn't result in wage increases in real terms for at least 2/3 of the nation and now unemployment is on the rise. Why is it with all that excess capital allegedly churning in the economy that we find ourselves in the throes of a recession? Could it be that the rich are not as inclined to consume and invest nearly as much the supply-side propaganda purports? Could the obvious truth that most consumers are MOST people give us clue that the best way to "float all the boats" is from the bottom up and not the top down?

POPSTrade with China Cost Jobs in Every State And they say globalization is good for the economy. If losing 2.3 million jobs to China during the last 7 years is good for the economy, then we are in great shape. You can thank free trade and George Bush for this dismal report.

POPSThe open source jobs boom "SourceForge, which maintains a database of projects and downloads. The number of projects hosted by the site has grown from 12,500 in 2000 to nearly 200,000 at the end of 2007, an annual growth rate of about 55 percent, according to the report."

POPSSexuality Bias Seen "Banks said she believed the rumors were started by other attorneys in the Grand Rapids office who eventually landed jobs at the Justice Department in Washington. She declined to identify them. Monday's report also said that Goodling used an Internet search that included the words "gay" and "homosexual" to screen candidates and their backgrounds." Well now! We used to play a game in school called "Gossip". We'd line up several people and start a sentence and everyone changed it a little while whispering into each other's ear. Of course it was unrecognizable at the end and we would all laugh. The point of the game was to show the social implications of pettiness. So why would anyone care about sexual orientation at the Justice Department in the first place? Ah, back to that wicked game of gossip and backstabbing to get ahead eh? No better way than to call them lesbians.

POPSDr. David Evans: Australian Greenhouse Office - 1999 to 2005
There has not been a public debate about the causes of global warming and most of the public and our decision makers are not aware of the most basic salient facts: 1. The greenhouse signature is missing. We have been looking and measuring for years, and cannot find it. The signature of an increased greenhouse effect is a hot spot about 10km up in the atmosphere over the tropics. We have been measuring the atmosphere for decades using radiosondes: weather balloons with thermometers that radio back the temperature as the balloon ascends through the atmosphere. They show no hot spot. Whatsoever. If there is no hot spot then an increased greenhouse effect is not the cause of global warming. So we know for sure that carbon emissions are not a significant cause of the global warming. If we had found the greenhouse signature then I would be an alarmist again. When the signature was found to be missing in 2007 (after the latest IPCC report),

POPSDid Team McCain Fire Gramm? Douglas Holtz-Eakin, McCain's senior policy adviser, on PBS's Nightly Business Report with Darren Gersh, on McCain economic adviser Phil Gramm's comment that the recession was "mental" and that the US is a " nation of whiners ." Kinda makes it sound like Foreclosure Phil's out, doesn't it?
