Less Biz for Contractors Under Obama?
Andrew Gillies
by Andrew Gillies  11-11-2008
Washington Post story, by Robert O'Harrow, also notes that slimming down federal procurement at the clip Obama proposes would require "a huge cultural change inside the government." Huge cultural changes don't come easily in Washington. For anyone wondering, 19 large U.S. technology services firms, all publicly-held and catering to the public sector, show a 52-week stock decline of 25%. The market's drop over that period: 37%.

11 Days Away: McCain Campaign Collapsing
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-24-2008    2
Obama is still going around busting his butt to tell everybody to bust their butt harder than they've ever worked before. Smart guy. With early voting now going on in some states he and Hilary and Biden and specifically telling folks at his massive rallies: "Leave here, go to your election centers, Vote Right Now!" But it couldn't look much worse for McCain. Besides the facts and figures of his falling popularity and growing lead: lead in the national pols growing, lead in the critical 'battleground states,' growing -- besides these numbers you can see the Defeat in his face and in the faces of those who talk for him. You can hear more excuses coming out of his campaign headquarters about why it was so hard for them and they are not doing well (excuses that are as pathetic as their campaign). We hear more Republicans actually switching sides and giving Obama endorsements. (like Colin Powell.) Stunned negative media is shutting up. The idea of Obama as president sinki

Feds to look into Lee County Sheriff Scott's 'Hussein' Obama comment at Palin rally
Jorjor
by Jorjor  10-9-2008    9
For the record, it's John Sidney McCain III and Sarah Louise Heath Palin. Gee..."Heath"...does that mean she's a heathen? And Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr. The investigation, though, is not for what Sheriff Scott said, but that he was speaking ex cathedra as a law enforcement official, by virtue of the fact that he was in uniform and on duty at the time he spoke. Had he been in civvies and on his own time, it wouldn't be an issue.

Dick Cheney, Role Model
sylviadafox
by sylviadafox  10-4-2008
"Ms. Couric asked Joseph Biden, Ms. Palin’s rival, the same question in a separate interview. He had it exactly right when he told her that Mr. Cheney’s theory of the “unitary executive” held that “Congress and the people have no power in a time of war.” And he had it right in the debate when he called Mr. Cheney “the most dangerous vice president we’ve had in American history.” "

The VP Debate
debbyski
by debbyski  10-3-2008    9
"When it came to domestic issues, Ms. Palin mainly relied on enthusiasm and humor, talking about hockey moms, soccer moms and Joe Sixpack almost as often as she used the word “maverick” to describe Mr. McCain or herself. But she offered virtually no detail — beyond the Republican mantra of tax cuts — for how she and Mr. McCain would address the financial crisis or help Americans avoid foreclosure or what programs they would cut because of the country’s disastrous fiscal problems. Ms. Palin’s primary tactic was simply to repeat the same thing over and over: John McCain is a maverick. So is she. To stay on that course, she had to indulge in some wildly circular logic: America does not want another Washington insider. They want Mr. McCain (who has been in Congress for nearly 26 years). Ms. Palin condemned Wall Street greed and said she and Mr. McCain would “demand” strict oversight. In virtually the next breath, she said government should “get out of the way” of American business."

Poll: Obama Leads Wisconsin
Wisco
by Wisco  10-1-2008    1
This one's a little personal. If I see one more electoral map that shows the Badger state as a toss-up, I'm going to hurt someone. Wisconsin isn't going McCain, it hasn't gone GOP since the Reagan landslide. Other fun results; Bush is really unpopular here -- only a 15% job approval rating. More evidence that McCain's done here. He's still spending money here, though. You can't watch TV for an hour without seeing a McCain ad. Glad to see him blowing that cash on a lost cause.

Paying For Your Own Rape . . . Again
debbyski

"That’s why when Senator Joseph Biden, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee, drafted the 1994 Violence Against Women Act, he included provisions to make states ineligible for federal grant money if they charged rape victims for exams and the kits containing the medical supplies needed to conduct them. (Senator John McCain, Ms. Palin’s running mate, voted against Mr. Biden’s initiative, and his name has not been among the long list of co-sponsors each time the act has been renewed.)"

Abortion Issue Dividing Catholic Votes
debbyski
by debbyski  9-17-2008    13
The McCain campaign also disclosed last month that the senator was meeting privately with Cardinal Justin Rigali of Philadelphia. Former Gov. Frank Keating of Oklahoma, a director of Catholic outreach for the McCain campaign, said the meetings Mr. McCain has held with bishops around the country were “strictly ceremonial.” But the campaign welcomed the bishops’ comments about the Democrats and abortion, Mr. Keating said, as “statements of affectionate support” for Mr. McCain. Many parishes distributed a voter guide, produced by an outside conservative Catholic group called Catholic Answers, which identified five “nonnegotiable” issues for faithful voters: abortion, embryonic stem-cell research, human cloning, euthanasia and same-sex marriage." HA! In November 2004, I knowingly and willingly committed the "grievous sin" of voting for John Kerry. And Lord help me, I'd do it again tomorrow.

Poll: Half Say Palin Unqualified
Wisco
by Wisco  9-6-2008    2
Also of interest: The poll found that Obama benefited more from his selection of Biden than McCain did by picking Palin. While 25 percent said they were more likely to vote for McCain because he picked Palin, 19 percent said they were less likely to support his candidacy. A majority, 55 percent, said the choice won't affect their vote. By contrast, 22 percent of voters said Biden's selection for the Democratic ticket made them more likely to vote for Obama, while just 10 percent said they were less likely to support the Illinois senator's presidential candidacy. Again, a majority -- 67 percent -- said the choice won't matter in their vote. More evidence that Palin was a base shoring choice. She's not winning converts, just energizing those already on the right.

Should Biden Share Blame for Foreclosure Crisis?
merrie
by merrie  8-29-2008    1
Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act (BAPCPA) “is directly responsible for the rising foreclosure rate since the end of 2005,” concluded a 2007 study by Credit Suisse. The law “increased foreclosures and the number of homes for sale,” echoed a July 2008 study by U.S. Treasury researcher David Bernstein. That study estimated the law had pushed foreclosures or forced sales on 200,000 homeowners since it went into effect, but noted that was a rough, “back-of-the-envelope” calculation… The bill was backed by banks and credit card companies including MBNA, which is headquartered in Delaware, Biden’s home state. MBNA executives had been Biden’s single largest source of campaign donations, and MBNA has employed Biden’s son Hunter as a company executive, lobbyist and consultant. The Obama campaign has said Hunter Biden did no work for MBNA on the bankruptcy bill. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/story?id=5670703&page=1

Back to The Future
bmeuppls
by bmeuppls  8-25-2008
 * In 1979, he shared Carter's starry-eyed belief that the fall of the shah in Iran and the advent of the ayatollahs represented progress for human rights. Throughout the hostage crisis, as US diplomats were daily paraded blindfolded in front of television cameras and threatened with execution, he opposed strong action against the terrorist mullahs and preached dialogue. * Biden opposed President Ronald Reagan's proactive policy against the Soviet Union. Biden was all for détente - which, in practice, meant Western subsidies that would have enabled the moribund USSR to cling to life and continue doing mischief. Had Biden had his way, "the Evil Empire" would still be around and Saddam Hussein still in power. The US would still be begging the mullahs of Tehran for forgiveness of unspecified "past sins" - and more American hostages would be seized in the Middle East while the mullahs celebrate their first atomic bombs.

It's Joe!
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  8-23-2008
Barack Obama chose Sen. Joe Biden from Delaware as his running mate from Delaware. I'm from Delaware and I couldn't be more proud. Biden is an excellent choice and one that arguably suggests that Obama looked to the quality of the candidate instead of any electoral college advantage by choosing someone from the 2nd smallest state in the nation. Besides his long and distinguished expertise in foreign affairs, Biden adds rhetorical abilities to the ticket that are only matched by Obama himself. By choosing Biden, Obama has shown extreme confidence in himself. Not even someone with the rhetorical and political skills of Joe Biden can upstage Obama. Moreover, this ticket is probably one the smartest in US history, a welcome relief to the reign of idiocracy of 8 years of the George Bush administration.
