at Happy People Don’t Do
Nerfzilla
by Nerfzilla  Today 8:40 AM
“We looked at 8 to 10 activities that happy people engage in, and for each one, the people who did the activities more — visiting others, going to church, all those things — were more happy,” Dr. Robinson said. “TV was the one activity that showed a negative relationship. Unhappy people did it more, and happy people did it less.” But the researchers could not tell whether unhappy people watch more television or whether being glued to the set is what makes people unhappy. “I don’t know that turning off the TV will make you more happy,” Dr. Robinson said. Still, he said, the data show that people who spend the most time watching television are least happy in the long run. Since the major predictor of how much time is spent watching television is whether someone works or not, Dr. Robinson added, it’s possible that rising unemployment will lead to more TV time.

How Many Troops Can We Support In Afghanistan?
merrie
by merrie  11-20-2008    2
This is one of those deals where 'surging' troops isn't the problem: keeping them supplied *is*. In Iraq we had shipping via Kuwait, KSA and some through Turkey, so we had at least four total ports, counting Iraq, to go through and multiple supply points. Are there any other ways to keep our troops supplied in Afghanistan? Lets start to the west and look at the countries: -Iran? Heh. No. -Pakistan... these are the folks that we are maximizing our shipments through. -India? No road there, really, except stuff that makes Kotai look like a superhighway. No. -China? Same problem as India plus likely to be problematical and shut things down on whimsy. No. -Tajikistan? Landlocked, so you would be looking at Khazakhstan and then Russia. Probably not, plus you would be shipping via some part of the trans-siberian railroad. -Uzbekistan? Same problem as Tajikistan.

Levitation in the Lab
cakebelly
by cakebelly  11-18-2008    1
continues: Several years ago, acoustic levitation was introduced to keep a droplet separate from its surroundings but the equipment required for this is complex, big and expensive. Alternatively, the technique of bouncing droplets was introduced in 2005 but until now it could only be used on a specific range of droplets with high viscosity. The new technique which the physicists began work on three years ago, when one of the researchers noticed that certain bass notes emanating from his iPod speaker could make droplets 'roll' and appear to dance, works for a much larger range of viscosity fluids than previous techniques and also for a larger range of droplet size – making it much more useful for chemists, biologists and food scientists.

Was the FDA Report on 'Bisphenol A' Ghostwritten?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-17-2008    1
Buried deep in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article is a very interesting factoid: "Bisphenol A was developed in 1891 as a synthetic estrogen. It came into widespread use in the 1950s when scientists realized it could be used to make polycarbonate plastic and some epoxy resins to line food and beverage cans." About 5-10 million people were exposed to the synthetic estrogen DES between 1938-1971, and the health of so-called "DES Daughters" is still being followed due to their increased risk for vaginal and cervical cancer, reproductive tract structural differences, pregnancy complications, and infertility.

"What Attracts the Psychopath?"
cakebelly
by cakebelly  11-15-2008    6
continues: To test the hypothesis, the researchers with Professor Stephen Porter’s Forensic Psychology Lab at Dalhousie showed slides of different faces to a sample of young men. The faces were either happy or sad, male or female, and described as being in either a high- or low-paying job. Mr. Wilson found men who scored high on a psychopathic personality questionnaire (a series of 187 questions probing emotional reactions and impulsivity) possessed the unusual ability to recall sad females in low-paying jobs. At the same time, they also had an unusual inability to recall females who were happy or in high-paying jobs, nor were they good at putting names to faces. “What we concluded is that psychopathy is associated with a kind of ‘predatory memory,’” says Mr. Wilson, 22, from Moncton, N.B. “They may use this to actively select their victims.” He’s interested in doing further research with diagnosed offenders in the criminal population. Mr. Wilson’s interest in psychopaths w

The Illusion Of Hope Triumphs
merrie
by merrie  11-15-2008    4
The rout of our democracy by a combination of Marxist idealogues and arab cash is now well underway. Our republic is about to be subverted from within. Obama will preside over the greatest expansion of the federal government since the New Deal tilting it farther to the extreme left and towards the model of a failed european socialist state with all the concomitant dependence on government welfare. The current financial crisis will be used as an excuse for government to spread its tentacles over every aspect of our national life. He has already displayed a disturbing inclination towards suppressing criticism which will continue with the imposition of the so-called "Fairness Doctrine" on broadcasters. His tax policies and the financing required for his universal health-care program, if unaltered, will plunge us into a depression. His party of idealogue obstructionists will prohibit off-shore drilling.
