POPS Thoughts on the Bailout Defeat "A number of Republican House members and staff, along with others who are plugged in, are telling me that Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats will come back with a new bill that includes all the left-wing stuff that was scrubbed from the bill that was defeated today in the House. As this scenario goes, the House Democrats need 218 votes, and they have to pick up a number of black and Hispanic House members who jumped ship because the Wall Street provisions, in their view, were too benign. So things like the bankruptcy judges setting mortgage terms and rates, the ACORN slush-fund spending, the union proxy for corporate boards, stricter limits on executive compensation, and much larger equity ownership of selling banks through warrants will all find itself back in the new bill. Of course, this scenario will lose more Republican votes. But insiders tell me President Bush will take Secretary Paulson’s advice and sign that kind of legislation."

POPSSmall enough for me When you're like me, frantically spouting words to keep up with your thoughts, doing all sorts of stuff hence having numerous programs open and running... then you might be in need of some kind of dictionary/spelling checker. But most of those programs claim too much space, resources and become more of a annoyance, rather than being useful. tinySpell is just the right fit. This humble piece of software doesn't get in my way and I can enable/disable it with a single touch. But best of all, it's free!

POPSThe Landscape of Possible Intelligences If we imagine the levels of intelligence as a ladder with unevenly spaced rungs, there may be jumps that some intelligences are not able to complete, or their derivatives are not able to jump. So a type 3 mind may be able to jump up four levels of bootstrapping intelligence, but not five. Since I don't believe intelligence is linear (that is I believe intelligence grows in many dimensions), a better illustration may be to view the problem of bootstrapping super intelligence as navigating across a rugged evolutionary landscape.

POPSThe Secret about Hoodia - the weight-loss crowd thrilled For hundreds of years the Kalahari bushmen have been eating Hoodia to keep hunger at bay during long hunting trips and in times of drought. And now millions of people living in industrialized countries are about to join them, as Hoodia-based pills are made available in the USA. However, for all the glittering promise of a better tomorrow, Hoodia is still somewhat of a problem. First, no scientific tests have been conducted on humans to check the effects of this plant. We know it works for the bushmen, but will it work for everybody just as well and without side effects? People high and low, from Hollywood stars to high-powered entertainment staffers to the common man, everybody is willing to overlook the lack of official studies and have a go at Hoodia. Many people have been fighting excess weight all their lives and are interested in anything that promises fast and effective weight loss.

POPSPalin a Good Christian Soldier Well, there goes her cred in the Arab street. But then, I never thought for a moment that the McCain/Palin ticket was focused on peace in the Middle East. Her proclamation of what amounted to a call for a Crusade just might fit perfectly with the bomb, bomb, bomb - Iran mentality of McCain. These are dangerous people. Unless you wish to keep squandering billions in revenue and wasting countless lives in needless wars they must be defeated in November.

POPSVenus in Gemini restless, yes. Fickle, NO. Never returns purchases - does not buy on impulse. Needs NO help with loyalty due to strong Cancer/Leo in chart. POPSStudy Outlines The Added 'Emotional Labor' Of Black Professional Women Durr and Wingfield illustrate emotional labor as performance with a quote from an African American woman who says of her workplace peers, "They…are careful to remember…'that's not professional. Remember they got the s that'll get you bit! Keep your Negro in check! Don't let it jump up and show anger, disapproval, or difference of opinion. They have to like you and think that you are as close to them as possible in thought, ideas, dress and behavior.'" Yes, that is apparently a science data point. The paper, "Keep Your 'N' In Check: African American Women and the Interactive Effects of Etiquette and Emotional Labor," was presented on Sunday, Aug. 3, at 2:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Boston at the American Sociological Association's 103rd annual meeting.

POPSGuaranteed Easiest Way to Make Your Own Pickles "Now that your brine has cooled, pour it over the pickles until the jar is full. Screw on your lid (if you’re using a recycled spaghetti sauce jar) or your canning lid and ring (no need to pressure seal.) Now just stick these guys in the fridge for a minimum of 5 days for awesome pickle flavor! They’ll keep in the fridge for weeks (although they are usually gone within days.) "

POPSCool Knitting Stitch Markers.... Example, ideas, how to make them These I found on etsy. If you're into knitting, and not into beading, lots of people sell these on etsy for reasonable prices, like 5 to 7 dollars for a few of them. If you wanted to make them yourself you just have to mosey on down to the craft store and pick yourself up some split rings, some head pins, and some cool beads. Even easier, you could just buy the split rings and hang forever single earrings, charms, old keys, or whatever else strikes your fancy, from the split rings. Buy the split rings in a size approppriate to the size knitting needle you use. Why use boring stitch markers? BTW...split rings are just like key rings, only smaller.

POPSHalf America would be on Death Row.
If it were up to the R party, half of Amer. would be on death row. I exaggerate but you have to ask...what’s wrong with these people? They can't see society for the people. Sick acts do occur that we’d like to cure. But with brains, one size doesn’t fit all. Many take a beating before maturity, so we wind up with depraved sins by sickos. If laws put all sickos to death there would have to be many death rows. Killing doesn’t stop such acts and sets an example that murder is an answer. Life without parole is cost effective. It takes alota $$ before a slaying occurs, life sentences are cheaper. (to those who tout PRISONS COST US TAXPAYERS MUCH MOOLAH, KILL THE BUMS!) Capital punishment is a fact in this brutal society and the judges must decide what it's slated for. It should only be for homicide. If it starts to pertain to other crimes, we slide backwards and kids will hang for stealing apples. Their legs must be weighted cause small bodies are too light to choke a life away. :-(

POPSDifficult Situation, But I Agree With American Airlines
I definitely feel for the mother in this situation. Having an autistic child is definitely challenging. And it's not her or the child's fault necessarily that a "fit" can occur. However, I believe AA did the right thing in this case. If a child - whether they have autism or not - can not be controlled and follow the rules on a plane, even if they have a disability that is causing it, they should not be allowed on the plane. Rules are there for a reason. It's the same when parents bring small infants on a plane and the infant literally cries and goes into a fit the entire flight. While I feel for the parents in that situation, there are several hundred other people on the plane that their child is impacting. It's selfish to tell everyone else they just need to deal with it because it's a child or the person has a disability. If an individual can't follow the rules and keep the environment comfortable for everyone on the plane, they should plan alternate transportation.
