Interior Ministry forces arrested, tortured and killed Sunnis. But a decisive step towards sectarian civil war took place when the Shia Al-Askari shrine in Samarra was blown up on 22 February this year. Some 1,300 Sunni were killed in retaliation. Kadm Darwish Ali, a policeman from Baquba and now also a refugee, said: "Everything got worse after Samarra. I had been threatened with death before but now I felt every time I appeared in the street I was likely to die."

POPSJanelle Calderon, Taken From Her Driveway! A teenager was allegedly kidnapped from her own driveway. The incident initiated a statewide Amber Alert early Wednesday morning. El Paso County sheriff's spokesman Jesse Tovar said the alleged kidnapping started around 8:00 p.m. Tuesday when 20-year-old Julio Adrian Martinez and another man drove to the home of Janelle Calderon in the 4800 block of Kiely Road. Tovar told KFOX an argument started in the driveway and that is when Martinez forced Calderon into a brown Kia Sephia and drove off. A statewide Amber Alert was immediately issued.

"Eyewitnesses say they are looting, killing and burning. These irregulars have killed three people and set fire to villages. They have been taking away young boys and girls," said Harding, watching smoke rise from another village, Karaleti. Earlier, Georgia said its troops had pulled out of the separatist region of Abkhazia today after the Kremlin laid down humiliating peace terms as the price for halting the Russian invasion and its four-day rout of Georgian forces. Georgia's president, Mikheil Saakashvili, signalled his partial assent to the terms, announcing with Sarkozy that he accepted the ceasefire. But Saakashvili raised questions about a continuing Russian military presence in Georgia and the prospects for any durable settlement looked uncertain.

POPSKidnapped Pakistani Christian Girls Forced To Convert To Islam after receiving a fatwa (religious decree) from a Muslim religious leader, to justify their actions. Later on, it was disclosed that the Muslim religious leader was bribed to provide the 'fatwa.' When Masih went to Gill to demand his daughters back Gill refused to let them go. Gill, though, threatened Masih and said that now the girls had accepted Islam they could not return to their Christian family. Ashfaq Fateh, a Christian social worker from Toba Tek Singh, told Minorities Concern of Pakistan that Gill warned Masih that if he filed a case against him, his family would be killed. He also claimed that he could not be caught by the police or found guilty by any court. Despite these threats, Masih reported all the details to the local police. However, no action has been taken to get the girls released and the police have told him to keep quite about the whole affair.

POPSTwo Kidnapped Men Rescued In Oak Cliff, Texas Authorities declined to release the names of four of the suspects. However, police have identified the fifth suspect as Luis Owens Gonzales, 24. Mr. Gonzales and the kidnapping victim who escaped had served time together in a federal prison in Bastrop on narcotics-related charges, Sgt. Stressing said. Dallas FBI agents are also involved in the investigation. They referred all questions to Austin police, who plan to release more details Monday.
