POPSSeven Cardinal & Contrary Virtues Most people are aware of the seven deadly (or cardinal) sins, but few are aware that there are two sets of seven virtues as well, one set standing in direct contrast to the sins. I find it interesting that a page devoted to atheism had a concise and easily found description of these attributes, but the religious sites I visited required wading through reams of theology much too extensive to clip. There is a clip on the Seven Cardinal Sins posted at http://clipmarks.com/clipmark/B17AB9AE-948C-4C29-8867-F0FC3434B26B/ by Sheroug.

POPSRandom Acts of Kindness Lots of folks have already commented on Zen Habits web site about their willingness to help create a website/service dedicated to this enterprise. I myself do not have the qualifications to contribute to this creation but would certainly participate on such a site. If you or anyone you know could then please check it out and network with those who have said they too would help. Wat an incredible idea whos time is now.

POPSHe Saw It Coming What economic developments does Roubini see on the horizon? And what does he think we should do about them? The first step, he told me in a recent conversation, is to acknowledge the extent of the problem. “We are in a recession, and denying it is nonsense,” he said. The United States, Roubini went on, will likely muddle through the crisis but will emerge from it a different nation, with a different place in the world. “Once you run current-account deficits, you depend on the kindness of strangers,” he said, pausing to let out a resigned sigh. “This might be the beginning of the end of the American empire.”

POPSAre Meerkats Naturally Altruistic?
For centuries, there's been a debate over whether true altruism exists among humans. Helping others at our detriment is risky behavior, evolutionarily speaking. Say you're overcome with an urge to give your last piece of bread to someone else. The other person eats, but you don't. Ultimately, after enough of these selfless acts, you'll starve and die, and your dangerous habit of helping others should die along with you. In the animal kingdom, altruism poses an equally prickly problem to explain. Why some animals exhibit generosity is a real mystery to biologists. It's not like they're thinking about the tax write-off they can get by donating money. Meerkats have one of the most cooperative societies in the animal kingdom. These African desert dwellers are perfect subjects for an investigation into altruism. For one, they live in a harsh habitat, quite a long way from easy street. Danger lurks around every corner because they sit at the bottom of the food chain.

POPSOrganized Religion Preaches Love but Practices Unacceptance This article is a good example of the negatives of organized religion. While many of them preach love, kindness, and peace, in practice they do nothing but reinforce nonacceptance of anyone or anything that does not conform to the religion's teachings and standards. I understand the psychological role or organized religion in our society, but I continue to stand by the belief that organized religion has been the cause of the great majority of the major wars, conflicts, and hatred in our history. Starting with the crusades and going up through to the terrorism we see in the world today. Religions reinforce that anyone or anything outside of their teachings are "wrong" and that those who don't "believe" are not worthy and should be punished. I firmly believe we won't have world peace until organized religion becomes a thing of the past.
