POPSSurviving the Fourth of July by Chris Hedges “As long as reading is for us the instigator whose magic keys have opened the door to those dwelling-places deep within us that we would not have known how to enter, its role in our lives is salutary,” Proust wrote. “It becomes dangerous, on the other hand, when, instead of awakening us to the personal life of the mind, reading tends to take its place. …”

POPSAnother Second Life resource... I am wondering where the market is for these services. If you have spent any amount of time in Second Life you will quickly realize everyone and their cousin is a consultant for Second Life. If you ask a consultant who their target is, they always want to bring in Big Corporate. My question is: Why? Are these consultants truly listening to their market? From what I am seeing, those interested in Second Life are there because they enjoy the environment. That is the fun of Second Life-getting in there and doing it yourself. My advice to Big Corporate: be very aware of intellectual property laws. Read Linden Research Labs fine print.

POPSTradecraft Of Socialist Realism So the media know exactly how to use that kind of image on behalf of the Left. On the other hand, John McCain is already being depicted as a crippled dwarf by nice people like these. http://www.desertratdemocrat.com/archives/1-mccain_bush_hug.jpg Oregon was a Phony-Op, a staged photo-op. The Clintons were masters of the phony-op, in the close coordination with their Hollywood friends. That's how Bill kept his numbers up. So keep a sharp eye out for Phony-Ops. They will be coming at us as regular “news” features until Senator O wins. Then there'll be a lot more over the next four or eight years. But if John McCain wins you won’t see them, just as you haven't seen them with President Bush --- the most media-abused President since Ronald Reagan. Just watch out for that little lump in your throat, the one that tells you, "Haven't I seen this before in Lord of the Rings?" And whatever you do, don't swallow. "Marketing Of A President"

POPSEarth From Space: A Blooming North Sea MERIS acquired this image on 7 May 2008, working in Full Resolution mode to provide a spatial resolution of 300 m. Globally, phytoplankton are a major influence on the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, and hence need to be modelled into calculations of future climate change. Just like land-based plants, they accumulate carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and store it in their tissues, making them potentially important carbon sinks. To support ocean carbon cycle research, ESA's GlobColour project has merged 55 terabytes of data from three state-of-the-art instruments aboard different satellites, including MERIS, MODIS aboard NASA's Aqua and SeaWiFS aboard GeoEye's Orbview-2, to produce a 10-year dataset of global ocean colour stretching from 1997 to 2007. The ocean colour datasets are freely available to the public via the GlobColour website.

POPSChristian Science Monitor on Reverend Wright - Did Obama's Pastor Preach Hate?
What people hear depends on their own experience and worldview, says Teresa Brown, who teaches the art of preaching at Emory U. in Atlanta. "I listen to 60 sermons a week by black and white pastors, you can find something in almost any one that is offensive to somebody." The key as to whether language is hate speech lies in a preacher's overall message, according to Martin Marty, of the University of Chicago Divinity School and renowned historian of religion. Dr. Marty, who has visited Trinity many times, says, "If Wright only had whites in his searchlight, you might call it . But he goes after the men in his church" about fatherhood, he puts himself and his people under the prophetic spotlight. "The black church took the distorted version of Christianity that provided the religious justification for slavery, carved out the racist elements ..and implanted new content that actually moved Christianity in this country closer to Jesus' message," says Dr. Braxton.

POPSDark Art Rizpah (‘coal’; ‘hot stone’) was the daughter of Aiah and one of Saul's concubines. "A famine, which lasted for three years, fell upon the land during the first half of King David's reign. This calamity was sent ‘for Saul and for his bloody house, because he slew the Gibeonites.’ David inquired of them what satisfaction they demanded and was answered that nothing would compensate for the wrong Saul had done but the death of seven of Saul's sons. David accordingly delivered up the two sons of Rizpah and five sons of Merab, Saul's daughter. The Gibeonites put them to death and hung up their bodies at the sanctuary at Gibeah. Rizpah thereupon took her place on the rock of Gibeah, and for five months watched the suspended bodies of her children, to prevent them from being devoured by beasts and birds of prey, till they were at length taken down and buried by David." POPS20 things that culturally define Australia Mateship Mateship is different from friendship. It means more than that. In Australia mateship is not just the expression of being one's friend, but being loyal to one's friend. You stick by your mates, no matter what. If they are in a bit of strife or under fire with criticism, you stick up for them. If your mate needs a helping hand, you give them that helping hand, and then enjoy a beer with 'em afterwards. Aboriginal Flag Designed by Harold Thomas in 1971, the Aboriginal Flag represents Aboriginal Australians as a symbol of their rich culture and history. The black represents the people on the land, and the dark skies of night. The red represents the land, and the ochre used in Aboriginal Art - and also the blood of Aboriginal Australians during fighting with early white settlers. The yellow circle represents the sun; the renewer of life. (much more at the source)
