Copernican principle re-examined: We might be living in a giant cosmic bubble
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-4-2008
Clifton, along with Oxford researchers Pedro G. Ferreira and Kate Land, say that in coming years we may be able to distinguish between dark energy and the void. They point to the upcoming Joint Dark Energy Mission, planned by NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy to launch in 2014 or 2015. The satellite aims to measure the expansion of the universe precisely by observing about 2,300 supernovae. The scientists suggest that by looking at a large number of supernovae in a certain region of the universe, they should be able to tell whether the objects are really accelerating away, or if their light is merely being distorted in a void.

China's Space Mission a Success.... at who's expense?
bookchick49
by bookchick49  9-29-2008
How much milk did they taint for this? How much did they scrimp on quality for exportation to other countries in order to afford their space rendezvous? I bet.... if we were to ban certain imports from China, it will be a long time before they are seen in space again. grrrrr

Privately-funded Rocket Reaches Space
Andy Greenberg
by Andy Greenberg  9-29-2008
Just a few days after the Chinese government performed its first spacewalk, SpaceX has achieved the first successful rocket launch funded by a private company. Finally, space exploration as a for-profit venture might be starting to make sense. And that may mean a new sort of race to the moon is beginning--this time between China's government and American private industry.

McCain's Foreign Policy: Global Democratic Gang
blueridge
by blueridge  9-27-2008
McCain calls for a "League of Democracies" for the purposes of "peace" but actually for war. Its key principle is "entangling alliances" which George Washington warned against, starting with NATO as its foundation. This is actually an old plan and precisely what the UN is all about except it cuts China and Russia out. This is consistent with George Bush (Bush 41) "new world order" speech where he talked about a United Nations that lives up to the intention of its founders, as he launched Iraq War I. GWB 43 has also made reference to similar principles while already by-passing the UN when it is reluctant to launch a war. Actually it makes little difference, except to show that Russia and China will be cut out of decisions because they will be the new targets of contest under his neocon vision. The call to "make the world safe for democracy" (like Wilson and FDR) has been the foundation of world wars, and likely more.
