POPSParents charged in death of 16 yr old Their case has focused attention on some laws that let parents rely on prayer to heal their children. Marci Hamilton, a professor at Cardozo Law School, who writes about religious issues, said the case may test Oregon's religious freedom laws and may prompt other states to re-examine their spiritual healing laws. "There was a time when we were willing to permit these children to be lost, but there are increasingly more prosecutions and lawsuits," she said. "Children should not be permitted to be the testing ground for their parents' faith or secular views if it's going to result in their death."

POPSSenator DeMint Has Outlined A Plan For Economic Growth EXPAND ENERGY EXPLORATION • Permanently Repeal Bans on Energy Exploration and Expedite Production: Expedite offshore and oil shale exploration, ensure states share in energy revenues, and prevent endless litigation from frivolous environmental lawsuits. REFORM FAILED GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS • Schedule the GSEs for Privatization: Transition Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac over a reasonable time period to truly private companies without special government privileges and expose them to real market competition. • Stabilize the Dollar: Repeal the Humphrey-Hawkins Full Employment Act, which diverts the Federal Reserve’s attention from long-term price stability to short-term economic growth. In an effort to fuel the economy, this additional mandate has encouraged the Fed to keep rates artificially low, leading to economic booms and busts, a rise in inflation and the decline of the dollar.

POPS Drill Baby, Drill --- Chapter One "This is a major victory for Americans who are suffering at the pump, now that Democrats' ridiculous opposition has run out of gas," said Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.). "Now it's time to ensure drilling is expedited and prevent liberals from tying energy production up in endless litigation." UPDATE: On the day Democrats made their decision official, the Institute for Energy Research, an industry-funded research group, released polling that shows the majority made a popular decision; sixty-five percent of the respondents in the group's bipartisan poll favored repealing the drilling ban, as compared with the 30 percent who would like to keep it in place.

POPSTroopergate Investigator Branchflower Slapped With Two Lawsuits
The Republican lawmakers’ suit, not only targeted Branchflower, but French and his Democratic colleague Sen. Kim Elton as well. “The defendants are conducting a ‘McCarthyistic’ investigation in an unlawful, biased, partial and partisan political manner in order to impact the upcoming Alaska’ general and national presidential elections,” it said. Elton is chairman of Alaska’s Legislative Council, which is overseeing Branchflower’s investigation. He is also ardently supporting Obama’s candidacy and has donated $2,000 to his presidential campaign. Monegan had attempted to include items in the Alaska state budget appropriating funds for various items within the Department of Public Safety that Governor Palin had previously vetoed,” contrary to the instructions of the Governor and contrary to the Governor’s budgetary plan, Monegan attempted to travel to Washington D.C. at state Executive Branch expense, in order to request federal funding through ‘earmarks’

POPSOnce Elected, Palin Hired Friends and Lashed Foes
Real Estate Agent as top of the State Division of Agriculture? Sounds a heckuva lot like "Your doin a fine job brownie". Of course that was when another rebubbacan, George Bush, appointed Michael Brown head of FEMA, our governments emergency response division to natural disasters and other emergencies. What was Michael Brown's qualifications? Before joining the DHS/FEMA, Brown was the Judges and Stewards Commissioner for the International Arabian Horse Association, (IAHA), from 1989-2001. After numerous lawsuits were filed against the organization over disciplinary actions , Brown was forced to resign Interviews show that Ms. Palin runs an administration that puts a premium on loyalty and secrecy. The governor and her top officials sometimes use personal e-mail accounts for state business; dozens of e-mail messages obtained by The New York Times show that her staff members studied whether that could allow them to circumvent subpoenas seeking public records. POPSWelcome to the new corrupt South Africa Oh, and add to that our future president, Jacob Zuma, who is still facing bribery and corruption charges and was found not guilty of raping an AIDS-infected lesbian. (he assured all South Africans that he was in no danger of contracting HIV because he had immediately afterwards taken a shower) Life in South Africa is about as surreal as it gets.

POPSFeds, Indy Reach Deal To End Diversity Oversight There is a risk that is run every time you begin to change the fundamentals of how government does its job. There has been such controversy this year with more than 10 police officers indicted, under investigation or that have resigned under a cloud that calls to reform the department are being made from many quarters. I'm not certain now is the time for our city leadership to move to end Federal oversight when the Justice Department is keeping an eye on these agencies, and after so many recent lawsuits in the past few years involving diversity related issues.

POPSRights Group Suing AT&T for Spying Will Sue Government Too "Cohn admits the government has many sovereign immunity defenses that can protect it from lawsuits, but says they aren't insurmountable and that the program clearly violates the Fourth Amendment. As for the unexpectedly long-lived suit against AT&T, the government and the EFF are discussing when and how the government will attempt to have the case dismissed using the amnesty provision. The EFF wants to challenge the legality of the amnesty before it is actually applied, while the government prefers to have the case dismissed first -- then have the EFF fight the dismissal. Lawyers for both sides will meet with the judge in the case in early September, setting a likely date for the next court appearance in December."

POPSWhere bombs were born, birds now flock More than 4.7 million tons of low-level waste remain at Fernald in a fenced-off, 110-acre pile encased in thick liners and caps made of synthetic material, clay, rock and clean soil. The 65-foot-high, grass-covered mound snaking along an edge of the preserve is about the length of two Empire State Buildings laid end to end. The rest of the radioactive waste - more than a million tons - was shipped to storage and disposal sites in Nevada, Utah and Texas. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I can express a naughty thought, that I hope the toxic waste sent to Texas goes near Bush's home, and far away from Wiccan Texan.

POPSCourt Invalidates HUD Rule On Downpayment Assistance
HUD has proposed yet another rule trying to eliminate charitable down payment assistance programs like AmeriDream! This action would prevent us from together providing annually over 200,000 qualified homebuyers across America the opportunity to own a home. Take action today and tell HUD the negative impact their proposed rule will have. After more than 15,000 comments opposing the last proposed rule and being defeated in two lawsuits, HUD is still trying to eliminate homeownership opportunities for homebuyers throughout America. Tell HUD that they are wrong again! Many depend on the help and hope charitable down payment assistance programs provide. Tell HUD to make sure that AmeriDream program remains in place so that the promise of homeownership remains a reality for the individuals and families FHA was created to serve. Tell HUD today that you support the program AmeriDream. The comment period ends August 15, 2008, please make your comment now.
