The Dalai Lama's Dilemma
einbar
by einbar  7-19-2008    1
"The Dalai Lama's comments came as a dampener for organizers of the Tibetan People's Uprising Movement, who had been hoping that if the Dalai Lama could not lend his support to the march, he would at least refrain from opposing it. Four of the five organizations involved in the movement oppose the Dalai Lama's "middle path" approach of seeking dialogue with the Chinese leadership in search of a "genuine" autonomy for Tibet. They want direct action to seek independence from China, and they want to it now, while the world is watching China as it prepares to host the Olympic Games this summer".

Paris Olympic Torch Relay Is Cut Short
merrie
by merrie  4-8-2008
Thousands of police sent on to the streets to protect the torch relay as it made its way around the city were unable to prevent demonstrators hijacking the event. It meant the torch had to be repeatedly put out amid safety fears. The event began with several hundred people waving banners gathering on the Trocadero esplanade where the relay started. Several activists were later arrested, with some handcuffing themselves to the Eiffel Tower. Sky News Europe correspondent Greg Milam said extinguishing the flame was significant because the torch was supposed to be kept alight on its journey around the world. “Journey of Harmony” of the Olympic Torch Of Shame
merrie
by merrie  4-6-2008    2
(continued) wretched political environs. Handling the politics of the Olympics will clearly be a matter of some delicacy. The Chinese ambassador in London may yet absent herself from today’s event. Gordon Brown and his cabinet should do likewise. The British, led by Tessa Jowell, the ensnared Olympics minister, periodically intone their “concern for civil rights in China” as if it were a Buddhist mantra. It makes no difference. From the moment the Games were awarded to Beijing, all involved knew they risked becoming quislings to the Chinese cause. China last week welcomed the British government as a member of something called the Olympic family. If this is a family, I hope that for the next four months it is an intensely unhappy one.

Getting A Message To The Free Press
Carl Lavin
by Carl Lavin  3-27-2008
When foreign reporters were finally allowed into Tibet, under tightly controlled conditions, a group of monks realized that this was a rare opportunity to get their message to the rest of the world. China is a country that has put a man in jail for collecting signatures on a petition. What will they do to these young monks?

Chinese Dissidents Urge Beijing Talks With Dalai Lama
merrie
by merrie  3-23-2008
China is damaging its own international credibility by prohibiting journalists from entering its Tibetan regions, the dissidents added. Yesterday the official Chinese media alleged that the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, was manipulating the protests in a bid to take the Beijing Olympics “hostage.” The administrative leader of Tibet, Qiangba Puncog, was quoted as saying that China must completely defeat “secessionist forces” to “ensure a successful Olympic Games.”

In WW2 their was genocide and it was by the country hosting the Olympics that year. Is there a parallel here with China who is not hosting this year - the genocide they are causing within their own region?
