POPSGeorgian Villagers Recount Tales Of Marauders The violence was much worse in ethnic Georgian villages in the separatist territory of South Ossetia. Displaced persons told stories of how they hid in basements while Ossetian and Chechen irregulars rampaged through their villages. They recounted tales of neighbors being shot and of homes being torched. Events happened so fast that many, especially the elderly, didn’t have enough time to escape. "They poured gasoline on houses and lit them on fire everyday," says 84 year-old Alexi Datashvili, one of about two dozen elderly and feeble residents from the Georgian villages In Gori itself, Russian officials have impeded Georgian television broadcasts, replacing them with Russian programming. The recently modernized Georgian army base in Gori has been thoroughly ransacked. Several hundred meters north of the base, Russian forces are digging new artillery positions – an indicator that Russian troops are not intending to pull out soon.

POPSRon Suskind vs. Bush Admin on Iraq-9/11 Fakery
Suskind's book has provided documentation of evidence and inside witnesses within the CIA and British Intelligence sources that a fake letter was ordered "from the White House" pretending to be from Saddam's Intelligence Chief to Saddam (whom the U.S. relocated and paid $5 million to) which was laden with lies and a claim of ties between Mohammad Atta (supposed 9/11 ringleader), Al Qaeda, and Iraq--back-dated prior to 9/11--which provided deliberately false claims to connect Iraq to 9/11. The White House has denied (see previous clipmark) but award-winning journalist Suskind summarizes his sources and defends his allegations on Democracy Now (see first podcast "listen" link). The second podcast, Aug. 14, includes House Judiciary Chair John Conyers who has already started an investigation under way which will lead to some kind of action. Conyer's stated the the Senate Intelligence Committee, headed by Jay Rockefeller, has the power to review classified documents to verify this.

POPSHow to Hitchhike Across the Globe Without Leaving Your Living Room The 360° World Atlas DVD lets anyone with a computer become a virtual hitchhiker, no packing or neck-craning required. Creator Everen Brown does all the hard work for you. He jets around the globe, lugging a 40-pound bag full of 600 rolls of film past airport security, and picks a picture-worthy spot. Then he takes one of the world’s last Globuscope rotational cameras (no longer in production), holds it over his head (sometimes he lies on his stomach), and waits (sometimes for hours) for the right shot. When he sees it, snapping the picture takes only a second. The lens rotates full circle, so you get to see what’s across from the Taj Mahal’s minarets too. Once Brown develops the film, he embeds the images into an interactive atlas ($69.95, www.360atlas.com) that shows off head-turning views, panorama style.

POPSWar and foreign policy [truly outstanding!] The best lessons of Iraq and Afghanistan are not about Bush failures, nor about a need to change the military, but rather about the nature of foreign policy; challenges the shibboleths of left and right. Andrew Bacevich, professor of history and international relations at Boston University, retired from the US Army with the rank of colonel. This piece is adapted from his new book, The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism.

POPSThe 60-Year-Old Dispute Between Japan and Russia MOSCOW, April 14 - Japan pressed Russia on Monday to end a territorial dispute over a chain of Pacific islands which has prevented the two countries from formally ending World War II hostilities and strengthening ties. The dispute over the islands, known as the Southern Kuriles in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan, has overshadowed Russian-Japanese relations for more than 60 years. Japan says a resolution of the dispute would attract a new wave of Japanese investors to Russia.

POPSIntelligence and Empathy He stresses that the human mind does not qualify as a completely ‘General Intelligence’ but lies somewhere on the spectrum between AGI on one end and ‘Narrow AI’ on the other. This is one of several reasons why he does not expect AGI to be achieved by mimicking the workings of the human brain. He describes how our brains fool us into believing that we understand our actions and decisions when we don’t. And why modeling an AI too closely on the human brain might make it too, vulnerable to false notions. He also says, ‘I think virtual worlds are going to be absolutely critical to the development of Artificial General Intelligence.’ As well as ‘Right now connecting AI’s to virtual worlds is probably the best way to get an AI to have a general human-like embodied experience.’

POPSSorry FOX, We Won't Let You Trash Michelle Obama You're not going to believe what FOX is up to now—we could hardly believe it ourselves. Not only are they smearing Michelle Obama with racist stereotypes, but then they offer a feeble apology that they believe gives them the right to slander her again. That's what happened when FOX called Michelle and Barack Obama's fist bump a "terrorist fist jab," apologized, and then less than a week later referred to Michelle Obama as Barack's "Baby Mama."

POPSWill The Real Barack Obama Please Stand Up? Without a TelePromTer staring him down, he's an inarticulate, bumbling mess. He lies continuously about his past and his present, including important details concerning his upbringing and personal associations. He shamelessly takes all sides of all issues, changing his public positions to suit what he thinks people want to hear -- far in excess of the boilerplate, mendacious blather put forth by most other politicians. Subjected to a rootless upbringing by a self-absorbed, radical leftist mother, and abandoned by a self-absorbed, hard-drinking philandering father, he sought refuge, meaning and personal grounding in drugs and in the hateful words and destructive ideologies of men like Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger and William Ayers. What are the odds that the Times's Nicholas Kristof will release the tape recording of that Obama interview so that language experts can determine whether or not Obama's Arabic accent is indeed "first rate?"

POPS John Edwards' Lies I admitted to having sex with her, I asked for forgiveness, but I didn't "knock her up" NOT ONE question was put to Edwards on the campaign trail by the members of our “adversarial” press. Some speculated that the whole story was a concoction of the Clintons, but the Clintons didn’t manufacture the facts of the story. . Unless the Clintons are into voodoo, Edwards was responsible for being the room with Rielle Hunter at the Beverly Hilton. DBKP - The Worldwide Leader in Weird
