POPSControversy at Calvin College over GLBT issues in the classroom It sounds to me like this is a classic case of a teaching faculty resenting the imposition, by a relatively distant and detached board of trustees, of a set of vague and ideological guidelines for classroom discussion. As a teacher myself, I find it incredibly insulting when someone who's never worked in a classroom setting presumes to tell me what constitutes an acceptable thing to say. Seen on christianitytoday's Delicious stream (delicious.com/christianitytoday).

POPSIs Health Care Reform a Civil Rights Issue? Sarah is not as dumb as she seems, she knows there’s nothing being talked about in congress that could even remotely lead to death panels she is just trying to assure an ongoing profit stream for the insurance companies by lying to scare people.

POPSA life revealed: "The Afghan girl", seventeen years later
More: In the mid-1990s, during a lull in the fighting, Sharbat Gula went home to her village in the foothills of mountains veiled by snow. To live in this earthen-colored village at the end of a thread of path means to scratch out an existence, nothing more. There are terraces planted with corn, wheat, and rice, some walnut trees, a stream that spills down the mountain (except in times of drought), but no school, clinic, roads, or running water. Here is the bare outline of her day. She rises before sunrise and prays. She fetches water from the stream. She cooks, cleans, does laundry. She cares for her children; they are the center of her life. Robina is 13. Zahida is three. Alia, the baby, is one. A fourth daughter died in infancy. Sharbat has never known a happy day, her brother says, except perhaps the day of her marriage… "I want my daughters to have skills," she said. "I wanted to finish school but could not. I was sorry when I had to leave."

POPSHow To Wage Your Successful War Against Effects Of Diabetes People with diabetes may avoid or delay heart and blood vessel disease by controlling the other risk factors. Medicine may be required to diminish high cholesterol and triglycerides, but a good nutritional diet may reduce the need for medication. Meds DO NOT prolong life in diabetics (look it up or ask your doctor to confirm this), they only prevent complications of the disease. Each day you take your meds you help control your risk of experiencing the complications of diabetes. Remember that diabetes is a serious disease, which, if not controlled, can be life threatening.

POPSThe Abu Ghraib We Cannot See "Photographs can’t show us that the real bad apples were at the top of the civilian chain of command in Washington, but that is what we need to know — or, rather, since we’ve known it and gone along with it for a long time, that is what we need to come to terms with now.

POPSIowa: What Happens When a Town Implodes Eight months after the Agriprocessors raid, Postville is still grappling with what its leaders call "a humanitarian and economic disaster," compounded by the recession and a harsh winter. Life isn't much easier for "legal" workers. Inside a faded community hall serving as a relief center are Michael Barner, 47, and Patricia Williams, 41, who moved to Postville last month to work at Agriprocessors but had to leave their jobs soon after due to illness. They have arrived with an eviction notice and are seeking help to return to Dubuque. "We came here. We tried. I got sick. We just have to go back home," says Barner.
