POPSIs Georgia a democracy? You wouldn't recognize it as one. Its standout characteristics are suppression of dissent and manipulation of the West

POPSCulture versus Biology: the Darwin Legacy This is a very good article, succinctly describing the ideological structures underlying the uses and interpretations of science; also on the humanities-sciences dichotomies. I have highlighted a short section as there is a contemporary championing of technological innovations especially in neuroscience towards a utopian future eugenically designed to eliminate the 'inferior' : such dangerous rhetoric is severed from all human values, history and ideology.

POPSWhat are the consequences of scientific misconduct? Despite this, 16 out of the 37 traceable scientists were still employed in academia. Redman and Merz failed to breakdown the punishments by the type of misconduct committed, but they did note that falsification and fabrication were treated more severely than plagiarism.

POPSRussia's response to Georgia was right Georgia made the first act of aggression knowing that Russian peacekeepers were present in Ossetia. Western media is misrepresenting Georgia as the poor innocent victim. Georgia is trying to use the U.S. as a pawn in order to get into NATO. President Mikheil Saakashvili is a contemptible and opportunistic toad and we need to distance ourselves from him immediately.

POPSRussian media None of this is or should be about Russia or the Russian people. All of it stinks of Soviet propaganda, Soviet brutality, Soviet morality, and Soviet nostalgia. It is the handiwork of the siloviki clique that currently monopolizes power in Russia through authoritarian politics, kleptocratic economics, and media manipulation. This clique must be shown that war crimes do not pay. The Russian people, too, need to learn that nostalgia for Soviet imperialism is a dead end for Russia.

POPSPelosi and her fellow totalitarians Totalitarianism is total political power by the state, and comprises a society in which the ideology of the state has influence and power over most of its citizens. Totalitarians attempt to mold the private life, the soul, the spirit, and the mores of citizens to a dominant ideology. Pelosi and her like-minded ideologues do this, of course, through every means at hand, including in Pelosi’s case the manipulation of House rules so that such things as a vote on off-shore drilling never see the light of day — or democracy.

POPSSocial Science is not Science "Their desire to hold on to that illusion causes them to resist many sorts of new information which conflict with their ideas. That is very human, but it ain't science. Indeed, what goes on in the social sciences would make for a fascinating sociological study." I have long held the view that social sciences are profound bullhockey, if I may use a technical term. If you research the foundations of these "disciplines" you will find that they are all based in a materialist foundation and seek to confirm that foundation through the masterful manipulation of descriptive and inferential statistics. It is time we recognize that sociology and much of the psycho-pop babble we are subjected to is nothing more than materialist propaganda.

POPSCrude Senatorial Loggerheads Part of what's confusing Reid and his ilk is the distinction between speculation and manipulation. Speculation isn't a bad thing. Indeed, it's a very good thing. Without speculators, you'd only have natural hedgers participating in commodity futures markets. Prices would be much less stable and market participants with unwanted inherent exposure to those prices (including farmers, airlines, manufacturers, retailers, and shareholders and customers of the whole lot) would have a much harder time offloading that undue risk. In short, speculators are a crucial part of a robust marketplace that moves us toward a more optimal allocation of risk. Without them, the liquidity and efficiency of the marketplace suffers and so does every participant in that market (which definitely includes you) Market manipulation involves deceptive and distortive practices intended to take unfair advantage of other market participants.

POPSCommission Finds Oil Price Manipulation The article goes on to say "...overall, most experts say the incidents are so scattered, and the energy market so large, that it's unlikely a single trader or group of traders can have substantial sway over prices." Of course, if this turns out to be an even fairly common crime, then the cumulative effect could be much larger. After the big corporate crime wave of '04, I think it's foolish to give them the benefit of the doubt.

POPSThe Comedy Stylings of Shecky McCain At the time, McCain’s spokesperson (Torrie Clark, yes, that one) alleged that this was story was some manipulation by the Richard Kimball campaign. Yep, it’s always the other guy’s fault. I wonder if the reporter on that story, Norma Coile, was treated to the screaming phone call that McCain has treated so many local reporters to when they dare write a negative story about him. UPDATE - Because you demanded it, here is a PDF of the original article from 1986.
