POPSMe, Myself and I The generally accepted linguistic explanation for the capital “I” is that it could not stand alone, uncapitalized, as a single letter, which allows for the possibility that early manuscripts and typography played a major role in shaping the national character of English-speaking countries. So what effect has capitalizing “I” but not “you” — or any other pronoun — had on English speakers? It’s impossible to know, but perhaps our individualistic, workaholic society would be more rooted in community and quality and less focused on money and success if we each thought of ourselves as a small “i” with a sweet little dot. There have, of course, been plenty of rich and dominant cultures throughout history that have gotten by just fine without capitalizing the first-person pronoun or ever writing it down at all. There have also been cultures that committed atrocities even while capitalizing “you.”

POPSCourt Quashes Request for Peer-Review Documents In a decision likely to be welcomed by editors everywhere, a federal judge in Chicago today denied a drug company's efforts to obtain confidential peer-review documents from a major medical journal. Although journals have successfully fended off such requests before, a loss in this case would have set a troubling precedent for other cases, including a similar suit pending in Massachusetts.

POPSIslam & Wikipedia entry I think I would like to use this for my class. We discuss wikipedia and how to use it as a resource for their middle school papers. We also try to discuss ethical issues and this looks like a short article that could get them thinking about these issues.

POPSMuslim Bullying How absurd for any religious group to expect for persons of differing faiths or no faith at all to adhere to their quaint religious practices. It reminds me of the resistance to teach evolution in public schools or the attempts to force religion into the public arena. Both spheres have a similar lack of credibility and rationale. Kudos to Wikipedia for not kowtowing to religious fanatics.

POPSIndian Pure Land Sutras The infinite universe, consisting of worlds upon worlds ad infinitum. The time during which the evolution of a physical universe took place is too long to be reckoned by any ordinary calendar and cannot be conceived even by a billion genius minds. It was formed, continued stability, it will be gradually destroyed, and will disappear. After this, the process of cosmic activity begins again in a cyclic evolution.
