The Hollow Lives of the Happy
abailart
by abailart  8-20-2008    6
<<<Who wouldn't question this apparently hollow form of American happiness? Aren't all of us late at night, when we're honest with ourselves, opposed to shallow happiness? Most likely we are, but isn't it possible that many of us fall into superficiality without knowing it? Aren't some of us so smitten with the American dream that we have become brainwashed into believing that our sole purpose on this earth is to be happy? Doesn't this unwitting affection for happiness over sadness lead us to a one-sided life, to bliss without discomfort, bright noon with no night? My sense is that most of us have been duped by the American craze for happiness. We might think that we're leading a truly honest existence, when we're really just behaving as predictably and artificially as robots, falling easily into well-worn "happy" behaviors, into the conventions of contentment.>>>

In Sickness And In Health
Allison Van Dusen
by Allison Van Dusen  4-29-2008
This is how you know the country is really facing a health-care crisis. A Kaiser Family Foundation survey is showing that 7% of Americans have themselves or know someone who has gotten married in the last year to get health insurance. I know that health insurance obviously can play a big role in whether people leave or keep their jobs but I had no idea that benefits were affecting major life decisions, like when to get married. Hopefully these insurance carriers also cover the cost of marital counseling.

Mrs. Vitter has cut the cutting-off!
zasel
by zasel  7-20-2007
I happen to be one of those folks who believes that adultery and other marital problems is something that is strictly in the purview of the marriage itself, and not, in any way whatsoever, the business of the public. Only in America do we force our politicians to live up to unnatural standards in their lives in order to satisfy this phony puritanical , fictional idea of sexual behaviour we have been led to believe is essential in our leaders. In Europe, for example, Jacques Chirac, the former president of France, was more than once seen in the company of his wife and mistress at the same time. The two women knew each other very well. Please do not misunderstand. I am not a proponent of adulterous behaviour. I am only saying that we should not expect our politicians to lead their lives on a different standard than the rest of us. I have never met a man, who when discovered to have been having an affair, who did not lie to cover his tracks. Not admirable but also not all that rare

Mental Care Falls Short for Vets

While its easy to remember those soldiers who are injured physically, there are many more that are suffering mentally. Not that one trauma is any worse or better than the other, more attention needs to be paid to the thousands of veterans that are suffering mentally and facing substandard care.

Obama: personal problems of rivals not a campaign issue

This "Breaking News" is Broke!
zasel
by zasel  2-2-2007    7
When the hell with the U.S. public finally grow-up? Are there no more important situations going on in the world that who sleeps with whom? I was absolutely livid as I was watching CNN's "The Situation Room" when Wolf Blitzer interrupted a discussion he was having with a political journalist to announce that Gavin Newsom has admitted to having an affair with his former campaign manager's wife. Newsom himself is divorced. These are all adults capable of working out their own problems. Why in God's name should the public give a damn about their personal marital problems? With Iraq boiling over into Iran, and the world collapsing around us, we shouldn't even be the slightest bit concerned in this kind of tabloid journalism. I have written to CNN about this, and I hope others might do the same.
