POPSMy Lentils Sprung a Leek Directions: Put lentils in saucepan, cover with veggie broth, bring to boil and simmer for 15 minutes or until liquid has absorbed. Meanwhile boil potatoes in salted water until just beginning to soften, but still firm (about 15 minutes). Melt margarine in good sized pan, add onion and carrot, and sauté until onions are transparent, then add mushrooms, spices and salt. Sauté for another 5 minutes or so, then add leeks. Cover and simmer for about 7 minutes, until leeks are tender but still firm. Stir in cooked lentils. Slice partly-cooked potatoes fairly thinly and arrange half in the base of a large oven-proof dish. Spread lentil mixture over the top. Cover with sliced tomatoes, then the remaining sliced potatoes. Sprinkle with vegan cheese and bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes. Serves: 6 or 8 Preparation time: 30 minutes.

POPSWhat makes these millionaires worthy of a bailout? More from the article: "I've been hearing from Republicans all my life about the virtue of capitalism and pulling yourself up by your bootstraps -- but it turns out the bootstraps have to come from the government and the government also does the pulling up? How is that capitalism?" I want to know why the government turned its back while the American auto industry was loosing its shirt to foreign automakers? And why didn't the government step in to stop our industries from moving overseas and leaving nothing but minimum wage jobs behind? These corporate welfare recipients who took advantage of a federal government that allowed an unregulated wholesale ripoff of their fellow Americans deserve to loose everything they own. American ingenuity will get us through this, but it will be a lot easier to do so without Bush and his gang digging the hole deeper while we are digging our way out.

POPSCSPAN Video Exposes Democrat Support of Sub Prime Mess I just love how the 'mainstream' media never once mentions any of these hearings when discussing how we got in this mess in the first place. After all, don't they have producers, researchers, etc. whose job it is to find this information. The thing is, they don't want this information reported on because it does not fit in their own narrow minded world view of 'blame the Republicans and George W. Bush for everything" model.

POPSHershey's is going cheap and hoping you won't notice The FDA, in it's attempt to protect us from deceptive advertising practices, has forced Hershey's to admit they no longer use cocoa butter in their products. However, FDA ruling will not prevent Hershey from practicing deception. The packaging looks exactly the same. They are selling an inferior product and they’re not even telling anyone. Do you feel betrayed yet? In a statement, Hershey’s told TODAY that consumers love its products and all its candies are clearly labeled. It still offers real milk chocolate in Hershey’s Kisses, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and its classic chocolate bar. Most corporations deal with increasing cost by raising their prices, Hershey's substituted inferior ingredients and tried to slip it past us. Buyer beware!

POPSAlaska: "Tip of the Spear" on Climate Change This week's National Journal looks at topic of climate change from an Alaskan perspective. Story quotes Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who describes Alaska as the "tip of the spear" on climate change. Says she: "Clearly, climate change is there; it's real. We can see it happening in Alaska more so than in other parts of the country." Murkowski, the story notes, also advocates opening Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil and gas development, dedicating a portion of the resulting royalties to subsidize new energy sources such as wind, geothermal, and so on.

POPSPearl’s Pumpkin Pie Around this time of year I really miss my mother. She died back in 1987 but the memory of her pumpkin pies live on in my heart. Oh my how she could bake. Her pies were so light they seemed to float off the plate. The crusts so tender and flaky they would melt in your mouth.

POPSMark Morford on the GOP, Palin More of this great column: To be sure, it's moments like these that make it difficult not to take some delight, not to sit back and feel the ironic righteousness melt over us like hot Cheez-Whiz over an Alaskan mooseburger. After all, Sarah Palin is anti-choice, pro-abstinence, anti sex-ed, religiously fundamentalist, a creationist, about as friendly to feminism and women's reproductive rights as John McCain is to his beloved "gooks." But here's the saddest part of all: Governor Palin knew. She absolutely had to realize that her daughter's unfortunate condition would come to light when McCain offered her this bizarre gig. To which we can only say: Way to shove your own daughter under the wheels of the GOP Machine, Governor Palin. Ultimate sacrifice indeed.
