Now "he is being examined by mental health specialists". I wonder if he was practicing to get into a circus or some kind of "freak show". I have read about people who allegedly could eat metal - don't ask me where or even when I read that, it is all mixed it with the other zillions of bits of trivial information that gets collected in my brain. :-)

We Must Be On Guard For Extremism
debbyski
by debbyski  11-11-2009
"When dealing with soldiers far from their homes and families and subject to the greatest imaginable stress, the Army needs to be on the watch for the predatory inroads of any form of political or religious extremism -- whether it be the jihadism to which Hasan was drawn or the Christian identity nonsense that inspired Timothy McVeigh."

Major Abu Nidal remains in under armed guard and in a coma amid the FBI probe into the killing of 13 and the wounding of 31 at the US army base. On Sunday an ashen-faced and paranoid-looking ex-President Bush toured the camp, muttering incoherently and barking orders as if he was still in charge. General Colon Bowel is on a phishing trip somewhere near the Azores.

We Need To Do Better For Our Military
sahara
by sahara  11-10-2009
Much of the study focused on 4th Brigade, home unit to most of the violent crime suspects. 4th Brigade was compared head-to-head with 3rd Brigade, which recently returned from Iraq. The 4th Brigade, now in Afghanistan, has suffered a higher casualty rate than other units its size in two deployments, the Army found, losing lives at a rate more than eight times that of 3rd Brigade. Along with the deaths came intense combat that took a mental toll on troops, the Army found. Soldiers in 4th Brigade were more likely than other soldiers to suffer mental illness. The study also found, though, that soldiers feel their careers can be damaged by seeking mental health help and too often feel that enlisted leaders don't support troops with mental illness.  November is National Adoption Month and I am going to try and highlight some of the concerns going on in the field of adoptions and post-adoption mental health (my specialty) to raise some more awareness on the topic. I am going to try and be fair and show both sides of the issues. Basically, I want to hear your thoughts and concerns. Tweet me a reply or post a comment below... The article clip below asks the questions of why states don't let adult adoptees have access to their birth certificates? What are your thoughts on it?

Murder-Suicide in Families (DoJ Report)
sahara
by sahara  10-25-2009
Previous history of abuse is by far the most dominant risk factor. In one study, 82 percent of the men who killed their intimate partners were known to the authorities — treatment professionals, the military or the criminal justice system, for example . In most cases, the man exhibits possessive, obsessive and jealous behavior. There is a gradual build-up of tensions and conflicts after which an event leads the man to act. The triggering event is often the woman’s announcement that she is leaving. The time immediately after a woman leaves an abusive partner is the most dangerous . Read an article from the NIJ Journal about a tool to help assess a woman’s risk of being a victim of murder suicide (pdf, 6 pages).

Flu Alert: 10 Warning Signs to Call the Doctor
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  10-24-2009
People at higher risk for severe illness include pregnant women, young children, and adults with chronic illnesses or weak immune systems. Those of us caring for older adults feel particularly worried, because seniors are generally at high risk for getting very sick from seasonal influenza. The H1N1 strain is a little different in this respect; adults over 60 seem to be somewhat protected from it. Still, when older adults get sick, we need to watch them carefully to make sure it’s not developing into something more serious.
