POPSU.S. Philanthropist Saves an Iraqi Baby with Massive Tumor
The foundation offered to foot the bill for Safa'a to travel to Jordan, even if the boy only had the slightest chance of survival. The foundation also is paying the medical expenses of at least three other Iraqis at the Amman cancer center. "The mission is to bring people to hospitals who have life-threatening problems and don't have money. I don't care where they come from," Tye says. "The center is almost the only beacon of hope for patients seeking treatment for cancer," says Princess Dina, director-general of the hospital's foundation. "We said we cannot turn a blind eye to these patients. They are pleading, 'Please help.' So we cannot just ignore that. We don't have the millions to cover so many Iraqi patients, so we said let's try something else." The scope of the crisis prompted the foundation to establish the Iraqi Goodwill Fund. To date, it has raised more than $1 million and helped dozens of patients, but the need for such care far surpasses what the fund can do.

POPSThought Police | The Left vs. Free Speech From the article: The extreme left loves to pretend it stands for freedom. It never has and never will. From the Reign of Terror in Paris onward, its core agenda has been the tyranny of egomaniacal intellectuals. The left pretends that campuses should enjoy freedom of speech, yet activist students shout down, harass and even attack speakers whose views they dislike. That's brownshirt behavior, folks - as surely as show trials are Stalinist. Hardcore leftists never welcome a freewheeling debate - they'd rather force their beliefs on the rest of us. It's an article of faith for the left that folks like you and me are too stupid to know what's good for us (we're so dumb, some of us even believe in God). For many years, the left's tactic was to pretend to care about average citizens. In the last century, the motto was the "dictatorship of the proletariat" Now we have the would-be dictatorship of the pseudo-intellectuals.

POPS Ghost towning steeped in mysteries of Old West
Other ghost towners described making a half-dozen trips before finding the town, but agreed the search is half the fun. Though their motto is to "take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints," there are gifts to be found -- literally and figuratively -- at ghost towns. David Pike, who grew up in southern New Mexico and now lives in Washington, D.C., has rated nearly 20 New Mexico ghost towns on his Web site. He says ghost towning has helped him understand how his environment affects him and taught him to live in the moment. "It's hard to ignore a metaphor when you're standing right in the middle of it," he said. "When you're standing in a building that was once something and now is slowly fading into not being anything anymore, that's a stark reminder about appreciating what you've got when you've got it." POPSYou Can't Fool All of the People All of the Time Instead of Drill! Drill! Drill!, their motto could be: Kill! Kill! Kill! In response to skyrocketing gas prices, liberals say, practically in unison, "We can't drill our way out of this crisis." What does it mean? Finding more oil isn't going to increase the supply of oil? It is the typical Democratic strategy to babble meaningless slogans, as if they have a plan. Their plan is: the permanent twilight of the human race. Liberals complain that -- as Obama put it -- there's "no way that allowing offshore drilling would lower gas prices right now. At best you are looking at five years or more down the road."This is as opposed to airplanes that run on woodchips, which should be up and running any moment now. Clinton proposed a 26-cent tax on gas. John Kerry said it should be 50 cents. Gore endorsed the Malthusian proposal of Paul and Anne Ehrlich in "The Population Explosion" hat taxes gas gradually

POPS Only As Strong As The Weakest Link
Beyond policies, though, a president should unite, not divide; however, Obama’s severe case of liberalism segregates the country into left and right. Rep. Dan Boren (D-Okla.) recently stated he might vote for Obama, but he refuses to endorse him. Why? Because the congressman believes Obama is the most exclusive club’s liberalist. As such, he doesn’t believe he can represent his constituency if he endorses the Democratic nominee. Others have joined the Boren ranks. If he can’t convince his own party to band together, how will he unite a country? Failing to acknowledge weaknesses does not translate into an absence of flaws, and finding the strongest links doesn’t prevent the chain from breaking. We have the choice to either anticipate the weak link or we can wait … wait until the last moment when the chain is most strained … wait until the instant the country is most vulnerable … wait until it can no longer hold … wait until it snaps. POPSMicrosoft says screw the Long Tail Way to go Microsoft. The whole point of the digital distribution era is it affords content makers the opportunity to sell their content without worrying about mass appeal (Long Tail economics). Microsoft is now eviscerating its digital distribution platform, Xbox Live Arcade, in favor of digitally stocking "good" games (and thereby deleting unpopular ones from its catalog). While the idea isn't unsound if Microsoft wants to build a robust library, it certainly goes against the entire grain of the digital age.

POPS(Katrina Victims) - Louisiana should secede from the United States and request foreign aid!
It's unfortunate to see that in over 2 years very little progress had been made. Displaced residents are no longer residents but homeless. Insurance companies have skillfully shirked their promise of being “good neighbors” or the “good hands people”, and avoided paying legitimate claims. This criminal behavior has robbed victims of Katrina of the hope of rebuilding their lives, families and communities. I find it interesting that our government hasn’t taken more action. Maybe President Bush is waiting for displaced residents to give up the deeds to their empty plots of land, so his Texan friends can build a resort with a few nice golf courses and call it the Rivera of something. I guess it’s a sign of the times. Insurance companies with large lobby groups can avoid the raindrops. Companies can terminate retirement benefits. Social Security should have a new motto, “don’t count on it”. And for former residents of Louisiana, “Forget about it”.

POPSPeople power transforms the web in next online revolution Watching 'I Love Bees' unfold is a bit like being in Detroit in 1905 when Henry Ford was still experimenting with mass production. A new organisational possibility is unfolding before our eyes. Where might We Think culture take us? We are just at the start of exploring how we can be organised without the hierarchy of top-down organisations. There will be many false turns and failures. But there is also huge potential to create new stores of knowledge to the benefit of all, innovate more effectively, strengthen democracy and give more people the opportunity to make the most of their creativity. The motto of the generation growing up with the collaborative logic of the web is not the solitary 'I think, therefore I am', it is be the social 'We think, therefore we are'.
