Dan Brown's new book: George Washington a traitor
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-10-2009    2
more: "Brown's novels are renowned for introducing sensational claims. These involve 'facts' suggesting that something which generations of people have taken for granted, is actually untrue. He weaves some real facts among the highly controversial stuff and has a good guys and bad guys race against the clock to decipher the clues. At the end of the day, it's simply a piece of formulaic fiction." Maybe so, but with six weeks to go and millions of copies of The Lost Symbol already printed in anticipation of another blockbuster, Freemasons in the US have been accusing Doubleday, Brown's publishers, of cranking up the controversy and deliberately leaking details of the plot. Masons are worried enough to be setting up a website recruiting teams of "experts" to carry out a page by page analysis as soon as the book hits the shelves.

George Washington Gay?
foxyarse
by foxyarse  7-3-2009
Robert Krispin, a prominent George Washington scholar, has authenticated the letters. "This is an amazing find! They are all in his handwriting and as I've always argued, George Washington always looked happiest when he was on a horse. Now I know why." On his daily talk show Rush Limbaugh said, "This is ridiculous! How could the father of the good ol' USA be a faggot. Next thing you'll tell me is that Adam Lambert is a gay Jew!"

Real cider is hard cider, and tasty stuff indeed
Lexica
by Lexica  1-17-2009    2
More: Finally, drinking cider is not an emulation of frou-frou British and French habits. Cider is America’s original beverage, a fixture in farmhouse cellars and dinner tables from the 17th century onward. When John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed , traveled the Midwest in the 19th century planting apple trees, the fruits were not Red Delicious. They were cider apples. Putting real cider on your holiday table — whether that holiday is Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Flag Day — is downright patriotic. It supports small producers and plant biodiversity.

First President could teach the 44th a few things.
Eaglewings
by Eaglewings  9-20-2008
As we race toward another election and we consider our votes for the next occupant of the White House perhaps it would do us all well to travel back in time and remember the virtues that made this country great. Avoid political factions and entangling alliances sounds like good advice to me. Perhaps our current bunch of political leaders would do well to heed the words of America's founding father George Washington. Washington went on to say that popular government depended on virtuous citizens and that only religion, which in the American context meant Christianity, could inspire such selfless behavior. He frequently asserted that religion helped promote virtue, order, and social stability, and praised the efforts of churches to make people "sober, honest, and good Citizens, and the obedient subjects of a lawful government." What say you?

Creationist Shows His Stuff
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  7-7-2008
Here's a pretty typical tirade by a fundamentalist Creationist that pretty much touches on all the points that Creationists get wrong all the time. About the only point he makes is that he's pretty ignorant about science and adheres to the talking points of the conservative right. My question is how many of these proselytizers will have to be proven wrong before they're eventually shamed into admitting that they've been lied to. The sad part is that many certainly have children who are also subjected to these ignorant views thus the ignorance is allowed to be passed along generational lines.

Christian Zealot Faces Firing
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  6-21-2008    12
Once again we're witness to an attempt by a Christian fundamentalist to indoctrinate school children into his cult. The interesting point was made that 1) for eleven years people have complained about his classroom behavior and 2) other science teachers have testified that they had to reteach students that took this loon's class. Now the school board is finally looking into sacking this "teacher".

A "science" teacher in Ohio is under scrutiny for mixing religion and science. This miscreant not only is a fundy nut but a liar too. I'm sure the kids in his class are getting the latest in science education (if they lived in the bronze age, that is).

Denzel Washington tells NY kids science is important
pokkets
by pokkets  5-2-2008
Denzel and his wife Pauletta have been awarding neuroscience research scholarships to college students, and he was talking to high school kids at Mt Vernon, his home town. His main message was that it may be great to be famous, but if you want to do something more important, learn about sciences, and the opportunities available, where there can be a field that is both interesting, and where they could make a difference.

Reverse Immigration

“You put it all together, and why should you stay in an environment like that if you have a place like Brazil, where there’s hope, a light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train to run you over?” said Pedro Coelho, a businessman in Mount Vernon, N.Y., who is known as the mayor of Brazilians in Westchester County. “Are they leaving? Yes, by the hundreds.” In Massachusetts, says Fausto da Rocha, the founder of the Boston-area Brazilian Immigrant Center, his compatriots — many here illegally — are leaving by the thousands, some after losing homes in the subprime mortgage crisis. In New York and New Jersey, travel agents and others who sell airline seats say that one-way bookings to Brazil have more than doubled since last year, to about 150 daily from Kennedy International Airport, and that flights are sold out through February.
