POPSExperts still undecided on this year’s health scare
officials feel that swine ‘flu getting its second wind or a resurgence of SARS would be difficult to sell to a public which has become increasingly sceptical after a decade of unfulfilled pandemic panics since Y2K. Dr. Nunn admitted that he was rather keen on a super bug scare this year, perhaps linked to MRSA, whilst others were keen on developing a theory that obesity was caused by a virus found only in burgers and other foods eaten by fat people. In an attempt to calm growing anxiety, Dr Neil Shrivan from New York’s Yeshiva University assured reporters at a press conference that researchers were well under way on developing this year’s frenzy of fear but he refused to reveal anything beyond saying that the disease was going to be ‘very nasty indeed.’ A spokesman for GlaxoSmithKline, the pharmaceutical giant, said last night. ‘We are watching developments closely. Obviously we don’t want the WHO to go for swine flu again as every government has stockpiled enough of the vaccine

POPSCola, stale chip research win win Ig Nobels What they found about the mechanism of sperm and aids killing makes me wonder if cola can be used on other micro organisms like MRSA. The sperm in the sugar, no doubt with the chemicals in cola acting as a catalyst, cause them to 'Eat themselves to death, through osmosis, and the recognition of sugar opening some cellular gates.

POPSMicrobicides could lead to tougher HIV
An estimated 33 million people have HIV. 66% in Africa. More than 61% of Africans with HIV are women who have been infected by their partners. They have found tougher HIV is not as likely to be transmitted. Microbicides work with consistent application, and in conjunction with anti HIV medication, which may not be taken. Reminds me of how Penicillin was once considered to be the the cure for many known diseases. It wasn't long before bacteria developed that were resistant, and the next generation of antibiotics needed to be developed. Now we have the top of the line Methycillin, and MRSA-Methycyllin resistant Staphylococcus Aureas -Golden Staph, and we're reaching the end of this line.. We tried to beat nature, and nature caught us and beat us back. As penicillin was a natural by product of a microorganism, it stands to reason that as many other species have natural antibiotics and defense mechanisms, we can find the next generation of antibiotics by following natures lead.

POPSYellowstone virus intrigues researchers The virus eats the bacteria in the hot springs. Known as a bacteriophage, or 'phage' from a group of viruses that eats only bacteria, researchers, are intrigued as to how they evolved to be able to survive in the hot springs. They can travel in steam. Bacteriophages are considered to be the most widely distributed and diverse entities in the biosphere. It is also believed they infect up to 70% of marine bacteria. They have been used as an alternative to antibiotics in what was the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and have been seen as a hope against some drug resistant bacteria. So far tests with MRSA have not been promising, as the virus that attacks MRSA, also contains the same toxin.
