US Textbooks Misrepresent Jews, Israel
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-28-2008    2
A glossary entry on the Ten Commandments describes them as "Moral laws Moses claimed to have received from the Hebrew God Yahweh on Mount Sinai." The same glossary describes the Koran as a "Holy Book of Islam containing revelations received by Muhammad from God." "All in all, there are repeated misrepresentations that cross the line into bigotry," the authors write. Wow. Talk about getting your knickers in a knot. Outrageous misrepresentations? I daren't say a word.

Oprah as a role model for Saudi women
balthazarus
by balthazarus  9-20-2008    1
“Oprah is the magic word for women here who want to scream out loud, who want to be heard,” Ms. Muhammad said. “Look at what happened to the girl from Qatif,” she said, referring to the infamous case of a young woman who was gang-raped, then sentenced to flogging because she had been in a car with an unrelated man. The young woman from Qatif received a royal pardon last year after her case became an international media cause célèbre.

I'm astounded too. Not by the "Allah meat" but by the gullibility of people. And they even found a vet who gave credence by claiming it "defied scientific explanation". As far as no explanation this shows an astounding lack of imagination. I'm no vet but can readily come with an explanation as could any rational person. But then, who ever claimed that the Allah beef followers were rational? There is a name for this phenomenon: pareidolia: "The tendency to interpret a vague stimulus as something known to the viewer; such as interpreting marks on Mars as canals or seeing shapes in clouds." I'm off to McD now and fully expect to find a holy patty. Ha!

What's Up With Black Names, Anyway?
dulios
by dulios  8-25-2008    1
The name Kizzy, which belonged to a "Roots" character, skyrocketed from oblivion to become the 17th most popular name for black girls in Illinois in 1977. Islam began in these years to have a clear influence, too, most visibly with Cassius Clay adopting the name Muhammad Ali in 1964. Others followed suit, including two fellows named Lew Alcindor and LeRoi Jones, whom you know as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Amiri Baraka. Around this time, an American boy named Barack Hussein Obama would be born. His given names, of Semitic origin, mean "blessed" and "good." Soon, out of these more political traditions grew a new one of creating names whose sounds the parents merely found pleasing. So the next time you are tempted to ridicule a name of any color -- black, white, red, celebrity, whatever -- it would be generous, and prudent, to do a bit of research.

Afghan Militants Butcher American Soldiers
cptenaud
by cptenaud  8-15-2008    3
I didn't say anything about it here or elsewhere because a.) I didn't know what the families knew, and b.) I couldn't confirm it with anyone else. As for the soldiers being alive when captured, I still don't know with certainty whether or not that's true or just battlefield rumor. But everything else my source told me has turned out to be correct. The New York Times explains in more detail: The three were identified as Sgt. First Class Matthew L. Hilton, 37, of Livonia, Mich., of the Michigan Army National Guard; and Sgt. First Class Joseph A. McKay, 51, of Brooklyn; and Specialist Mark C. Palmateer, 38, of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., both of them part of a reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition unit of the New York Army National Guard, according to a Pentagon news release. Their Afghan interpreter was 21-year-old Muhammad Fahim from Kabul, who had been working with the Americans for the last three years. His body was burned beyond recognition, his family said.

Kidnapped Pakistani Christian Girls Forced To Convert To Islam
merrie
by merrie  8-6-2008    1
after receiving a fatwa (religious decree) from a Muslim religious leader, to justify their actions. Later on, it was disclosed that the Muslim religious leader was bribed to provide the 'fatwa.' When Masih went to Gill to demand his daughters back Gill refused to let them go. Gill, though, threatened Masih and said that now the girls had accepted Islam they could not return to their Christian family. Ashfaq Fateh, a Christian social worker from Toba Tek Singh, told Minorities Concern of Pakistan that Gill warned Masih that if he filed a case against him, his family would be killed. He also claimed that he could not be caught by the police or found guilty by any court. Despite these threats, Masih reported all the details to the local police. However, no action has been taken to get the girls released and the police have told him to keep quite about the whole affair.

MicroCredit
zalisan
by zalisan  8-2-2008    3
Microcredit is the extension of small loans to people too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. These very small loans allow the poor to develop their various businesses and trades. As a result people have the chance to bring themselves out of poverty. Microcredit goes directly to the people who need it and instills a sense of pride that can sometimes be lost with traditional charity handouts. When money is used for microcredit, it is not used once but over and over again. When a loan is repaid with interest, the money generated is given to a new borrower. In time this creates a sustainable institution, which is not reliant on continuous donations. The majority of microcredit borrowers are women because they have proven to be excellent at managing their businesses. Also, when a lady controls the finances the money she earns tends to go back into the home and to her children's education. Promoting credit as a human right. Helping poor families help themselves to overcome.
