Gecko Remains - One Hundred Million Years Old
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  8-12-2009
I like the comment right at the end: "The fossil tree resin preserved the gecko's sticky toe hairs, called lamellae, which are also found on modern-day geckos. Such hairs enable the small reptiles to hang on to vertical surfaces or walk upside down--and have even inspired an artificial "gecko tape" that could someday give its users Spider Man-like clinging powers. Aung San Suu Kyi Found Guilty of Breaking House Arrest
disenchantedcitizen

And the beat goes on. The excuse they used this time to hold her came in the form of some American fool who snuck into her home, against her wishes, telling of a dream he had of her assassination. Of course, they would have just made up some other flimsy reason to keep her locked away from her followers. I somehow doubt Obama is going to send anyone to Burma to rescue this guy. There is hope though, Burma has been identified as possibly receiving nuclear plans from North Korea. http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jul/21/burma-north-korea-nuclear-clinton

This is Laos - An Overview for Travellers
FincaFantastica
by FincaFantastica  8-4-2009
Some people call this country "South East Asia's Best Kept Secret" but the truth is, according to Lonely Planet, that the only country in South East Asia that doesn't have a coastline is fast earning cult status among travellers. So if you want to visit before the masses arrive hand in hand with Burger King, Coca Cola and all that jazz - Now is the time to do so. Laos will not remain a secret for much longer.

I believe we've heard this from another member of "the axis of evil". And I read yesterday that the USS McCain was no longer following the vessel. Someone suggested that the hands of the US are tied because of our financial obligations to China...I hope that is not true.

True-life heros in comic books - Great!
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  6-12-2009
To Shimizu, who as a boy repeatedly encountered discrimination and “uncomfortable, unpleasant remarks” about his South Korean background, these were every bit as important as the more serious manga that taught him about politics, history, philosophy and romance. “In Japan, we receive information about everything through manga,” Shimizu says. “Manga is not just a genre, it’s a medium. So I knew the power of this storytelling vehicle.” Now he’s harnessing that power to tell the inspiring stories of true-life heroes like civil rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr., former South African president Nelson Mandela and Myanmar’s pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi.

Termites And Protozoa Discovered Together In Ancient Amber
cakebelly
by cakebelly  5-16-2009    2
more: Between animals and microorganisms, this is the earliest example ever discovered of "mutualism," which is one type of symbiotic relationship in which two species help each other. "Termites live on cellulose, mostly from the dead wood they chew, but they depend on protozoa in their gut to provide the enzymes that can digest the wood," Poinar said. "These protozoa would die outside of the termite, and the termite would starve if it didn't have the protozoa to aid in digestion. In this case they depend on each other for survival."

Per Eriksson
by Per Eriksson  5-14-2009
A question of freedom to speak and freedom to have political different views? Most of us in the western world take it for granted and that is natural so it should be. In lots of other places that is not the fact, Suu Kiy is a person that relentlessly keeps on fighting for her believes and her followers, I admire this quality immensely and It is on top of my wishing list for her to have success in her mission, yet again it looks like she has had another set back.........

The Sea Gypsies of the Andaman Sea
cakebelly
by cakebelly  2-27-2009
continues: Moken children learn how to swim before they can walk. The Moken can plunge to depths of 75 feet without any life support gear and can also lower their heart rates in order to hold their breaths for twice as long as other humans. And that’s not all: Swedish scientist Anna Gislen also found that Moken children have the power to constrict their pupils to tiny pinpoints when they’re in the water, enabling them to sharpen their sight and see much better underwater than the rest of us.
