Cont: The problem is that this graph does not appear to be correct. Other data sources show Arctic ice having made a nice recovery this summer. NASA Marshall Space Flight Center data shows 2008 ice nearly identical to 2002, 2005 and 2006. Maps of Arctic ice extent are readily available from several sources, including the University of Illinois, which keeps a daily archive for the last 30 years. Ever notice that the same people who are constantly wrong about global warming are also the ones that push for socialism cause "it'll work this time, you'll see"

7 New Questions on the Future of Mars and Private Space for Buzz Aldrin
pocketfulofsunshine
by pocketfulofsunshine  8-14-2008
Do we have a space race on our hands now? The finish lines are entirely different. All China has to do is take a Shenzhou and join it up with a Russian propulsion stage and go around the moon and come back. Our purpose is not just to go around the moon. We need to establish a coherent, deliberate program that prepares for commercial use of lunar resources and permanence on Mars. And maybe we learn how to go to smaller places with resources not on the moon. Asteroids just may have very high value. How do you hope space travel will play out for regular folks? I want to increase the opportunity for more people to share in going into orbit. I think I can establish a controlled, legal, highly productive, random selection of small investments by people and a selection process that works like a lottery. The experience that you win is nontransferable. You put a name down when you buy a ticket, and that person has to use it or lose it.

For the Next Time You Wonder What Good Space Exploration Does Down Here...
Jorjor
by Jorjor  8-12-2008    2
The swimmers and coaches attribute 5 gold medals (so far), most won with world-record times, to the Speedo Lazer suit. NASA's expertise in engineering friction-reducing materials as coatings on rockets and other spacecraft to reduce drag as they travel through the atmosphere. Many people are unaware of the fact that in addition to sending men and machines into space, NASA also functions as a technology broker to private industry (they are forbidden by law from profiting from research they sponsor). The development of integrated circuits was spurred by the fact that US rockets were much less powerful than the USSR's, so we had to reduce weight by designing lighter components. Without NASA, computers and other microprocessor-driven machines would be 20 or more years behind where they are now.

their greatest crime of all--ignoring the climate change
papananook
by papananook  8-11-2008    1
He added that they should, in his opinion, "be tried for high crimes against humanity and nature… I anticipate testifying against relevant CEOs in future public trials." That's a novel thought in our nation's capital. Oh, and while he was at it, he probably should have thrown in George W., Dick C., and crew. What they haven't done (and what they've blocked from being done) over these last eight years may turn out to be their greatest crime of all. Talk about smoking guns... or is it melting ice? And here's the sad thing, as with so much else in these last years, the only way global warming has gotten the slightest respect in Bush's Washington is as a national security issue. Big surprise. The Navy, for instance, was already holding a symposium entitled "Naval operations in an Ice-Free Arctic" in April 2001; now, it seems that by 2010, or 2015 at the latest, it may have its wish -- an iceless Arctic Ocean in the summer for the first time in perhaps one million years and a scramble for

Will NASA Test a Plasma Drive on the ISS?
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  8-8-2008
A plasma engine such as the VASIMR uses radio waves to ionize a propellant, and magnetic fields to accelerate or decelerate the resulting plasma to generate thrust. The VASIMR injects a gas such as hydrogen in to an engine that turns it in to plasma. The radio waves are now used to energize the plasma further as it moves through the engine. The plasma, now accelerated and heated, is focused and directed as exhaust using a magnetic nozzle.

Mars toxin doesn't rule out life NASA
pokkets
by pokkets  8-7-2008
The seas early in the history of the planet Earth were thought by NASA to be toxic to oxygen breathing organisms http://www.nasa.gov/home/hqnews/2005/oct/HQ_05338_toxic_seas.html Oxygen was also thought to be toxic to the majority of organisms existing at the time. The introduction of oxygen through photosynthesis when it evolved in plants, being the basis for one of the first Mass-extinction events. Nature has managed to squeeze energy from more toxic chemicals than perchlorate. Toxicity can be relative. Chlorine can be toxic in bleach, but can assist the conductivity of electricity ( when combined with sodium-salt) in non conductive organic materials. Still I thought it was funny this time scientists weren't just 'surprised', they were 'stunned' Beats me why they're still determined to find life on Mars, when life on Earth is getting such little respect.

More on NASA's "Life on Mars" Controversy -What's Your Bet?
bloowell
by bloowell  8-7-2008
Perchlorates are the salts that are derived from perchloric acid, and are found naturally on Earth, in such places as Chile’s hyper-arid Atacama Desert. The compound is stable, according to NASA’s press release, and does not destroy organic material under standard circumstances. In fact, some microorganisms on Earth are fueled by processes that involve perchlorates. But most importantly to the discovery on Mars, is that perchlorates are oxidants, in other words, they can release oxygen.
