POPSStudy: Risk of Alcoholism High in Returning Combat Vets The article includes this statement: Alcohol abuse, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression make up an "unholy trinity" that haunts some combat soldiers, said psychologist William Schlenger of the consulting firm Abt Associates Inc. in Durham, N.C. He was a principal investigator of the influential National Vietnam Veterans' Readjustment Study, but was not involved in the new research. "They have intrusive recollections: 'I keep remembering it, I have nightmares about it, I can't escape it,'" Schlenger said. Vets try to escape the memories through alcohol or drugs, he said. This is a lasting damage to the country that we'll pay for for decades.

POPSJohn McCain is in New Jersey Today. Half of NJ's National Guard Isn't
When John McCain is in New Jersey today, we urge him to address the thousands of families that have been affected by this deployment and describe the relief he would provide them as President. In addition, VFA had been repeatedly contacted by NJ Guard members and other servicemembers from New Jersey who want to know Senator McCain's position on compensating members of our armed forces who have been stop-lossed. Recently, Senator Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey introduced a bill calling for compensation to provided to those who affected by this regrettable policy. VFA calls on Senator McCain to clearly state if he supports Senator Lautenberg's "Stop Loss Compensation Act." Our servicemembers deserve answers, especially after considerable questions were raised regarding Senator McCain's support for our troops' well being when he opposed the successful effort to expand the GI Bill, as called for in a bill that Senator Lautenberg also co-sponsored.

POPSThe Ironic Destruction Of Our National Guard Under President "Do Not Volunteer For Overseas Of all the statistics and stories I have read on this issue, many from the work I do with Veterans For America, one sticks out. This fall, half of New Jersey's National Guard will be in Iraq, half. What happens if there is another attack this fall at the end of the election cycle and half of New Jersey's National Guard is gone? What happens if a hurricane strikes the Jersey Shore? What happens if the National Guard is needed and they simply aren't there? Other issues with Iraq get more attention, but the silent destruction of our National Guard and the impact of this administration's policies on the future of the guard are often over-looked. As this administration breaks with long-standing Guard policy, like the fact that the Guard used to give five times as much time at home as deployed, morale and enrollment in the Guard will surely decline.

POPSHurricane Dolly Bears Down on Texas Dolly is described as a "slow-moving" storm, meaning that there may be more damage than would normally be expected from a Category 2, mostly in the form of flooding. LiveScience.com : Flooding, which can result from both torrential rains and the ocean surf a storm can push ashore, is what officials in Texas were most concerned about after Dolly made landfall as a Category 2 hurricane at 9 am EDT on Wednesday. Residents of the Rio Grande Valley have been warned of potential severe flooding and possible levee breaks. The National Hurricane Center predicted that Dolly could drop a total of 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 centimeters) of rainfall in the next few days, with some isolated spots potentially getting soaked by up to 15 inches.

POPSObama's Civilian National Security Force How is it possible their candidate is seeking to create some kind of massive but secret national police force that will be even bigger than the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force put together? Now, maybe he was misquoted by the Congressional Quarterly and the Chicago Tribune. I guess it's possible. If so, you would think he would want to set the record straight. Maybe he misspoke. That has certainly happened before. Again, why wouldn't the rest of my colleagues show some curiosity about such a major and, frankly, bone-chilling proposition? Are we talking about creating a police state here? The U.S. Army alone has nearly 500,000 troops. That doesn't count reserves or National Guard. In 2007, the U.S. Defense budget was $439 billion. Is Obama serious about creating some kind of domestic security force bigger and more expensive than that? If not, why did he say it? What did he mean?

POPSMcCain vs. Obama On National Security
that espouses the destruction of the State of Israel as its fondest wish and pledges undying enmity to the United States to possess the weapons to advance their malevolent ambitions." He also rejects "unconditional dialogues" with Iran. Obama has delivered messages on Iran that were more mixed. But that only makes diplomacy more important. If we must use military force, we are more likely to succeed, and will have far greater support at home and abroad, if we have exhausted our diplomatic efforts." In the same speech, however, Obama promised: "aggressive, principled diplomacy without self-defeating preconditions....Obama missed a vote on a controversial amendment offered by Sen. Jon Kyl and Lieberman that proposed labeling Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization . Obama called the amendment a repeat of the mistakes that led to war in Iraq; however, he had cosponsored an earlier bill declaring the Revolutionary Guard a terrorist organization

POPSHeadline May 4, 1970 This reporter, who was with the group of students, did not see any indication of sniper fire, nor was the sound of any gunfire audible before the Guard volley. Students, conceding that rocks had been thrown, heatedly denied that there was any sniper. Gov. James A. Rhodes called on J. Edgar Hoover, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, to aid in looking into the campus violence. A Justice Department spokesman said no decision had been made to investigate. At 2:10 this afternoon, after the shootings, the university president, Robert I. White, ordered the university closed for an indefinite time, and officials were making plans to evacuate the dormitories and bus out-of-state students to nearby cities.

POPSSAVE Act Discharge Petition Filed, Gaining Momentum
The Senate attached an immigration enforcement measure sponsored by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) to its Fiscal Year 2009 Budget Resolution before passage on March 13. The amendment would create a deficit-neutral reserve fund that fully covers completion of the 700-mile border fence and at least 6,000 National Guard troops at the border. The fund also would cover: implementing the exit data portion of the U.S. VISIT entry/exit system at airports, seaports, and land ports of entry; training/ reimbursement for state and local immigration law enforcement under the Section 287(g) program; and expanding the zero tolerance illegal entry prosecution policy to all 20 border sectors. The principle mission of the caucus, which includes Republican Senators David Vitter (La.), James DeMint (S.C.), Jeff Sessions (Ala.), James Inhofe (Okla.), Elizabeth Dole (N.C.), Saxby Chambliss (Ga.), Johnny Isakson (Ga.), Richard Burr (N.C.), and Roger Wicker (Miss.), "promote a true, achievable alternative

POPS U.S. Troops Asked If They Would Shoot American Citizens WTF is goin' on? "There's somethin' happenin' here, what it is ain't exactly clear, ...bad lines bein' drawn... Think it's time to STOP! What's that sound? every look what's goin' down!" Dang, I couldn't remember all the words to the Old Buffalo Springfield song...but you get the Idea. Be vigilant and ready to resist if Martial law is declared because of some bogus "national security event".

POPSIraq Vets may suffer depression, stress Being sent away as their countries heroes, That war is 'noble, be given the blame when they return because the real culprit cannot be brought to trial while cowering behind security laws. They didn't start it. Just like Vietnam, but hotter, drier, and longer.Talking about respect for the troops is a political stunt, for which there is absolutely no evidence apart from lip service, while the real support comes from other veterans, or charitable organizations. Business isn't charitable. Families? The person they sent away, never comes back, "There we're no V'day heroes in 1973" A line from the song Khe Sanh by Jimmy Barnes from Cold Chisel an Australian Band. The song says in a line: If I'm not welcome here, I'll go and live somewhere else, preferably overseas. There isn't often that option.

POPSBush to Democrats "We are at War"
Bush blames the democrats for poor veterans programs, due to their unwillingness to rubber stamp military spending. He talks about allowing the likes of Hitler, and "Lenin, and the consequences. The dictator is here, and the consequences are patently obvious, and immediate. The War is the Second American Civil War. The Aristocracy vs The People. Just look at the real defense of the U.S. homeland. There hasn't been a whit. Katrina, California, The National guard, the poverty that is consuming more, and more people who thought they had a secure lifestyle and income. The absolute assumption of power despite the will of the majority, the preparedness to act in a criminal manner. A) Because the laws that are enacted particularly absolve them, or B) Because there is confidence of enough reasonable doubt to avoid conviction, The absolute disregard for the constitution that endowed them with power, corrupt election practices, genocide, prejudice..... POPS Pentagon to alert 8 Guard units for duty Two of the units will be full combat brigades heading to Iraq — between next summer and into 2009, to serve as part of the rotation with active duty troops. There are currently 20 combat brigades in Iraq, but under plans mapped out by President Bush and his top commanders, that number will gradually drop to 15 next year, as the U.S. reduces its troop presence there.

POPSGuard Troops in Puerto Rico Wants the War to End
The Governor of Puerto Rico gets a standing O from military service people at the mention of ending the Iraq war. 7 soldiers publish an OPED in the New York Times last week explaining why staying in Iraq is a mistake. Petitions are signed by soldiers serving in Iraq asking for troop withdrawals etc etc etc. And yet, when you listen to the Republicans they tell you that ALL the troops wanna stay in Iraq until their job is done and they have procured victory. I have no doubt whatsoever that there are many troops in Iraq that do feel that way, but from all the polls being taken, the majority of them wanna come home.......yesterday. I am sick to my stomach over the way this administration continually uses our brave soldiers as propaganda tools. Just like Ari Fleischer is doing when he didn't even bother learning the name of the soldier who lost both his legs in Iraq, who is appearing in one of their pro-war commercials. They are all shameful to the core.

POPSHow the Immigration debate can end the War Sounds like a workable idea. Not the best, but once the national guard comes home, the rest can be followed-up upon. I have always said the troops could protect us far better at home than in Iraq. And not just by guarding borders.

POPSRepublicans Refuse to give troops a decent break.
I think I got this headline right. US Senator Jim Webb is one of the few in Congress who was actually in a war. Using the National Guard to fight in a foreign war in the first place is a rip off; now coldly denying them a decent time to re-connect to their homes and ready for the next in an endless series of deployments, is a cold-hearted action by Congress towards it's own people and shows that it is these warmongering Republicans who -- based on this one vote alone -- can be seen as Not Supporting Our Troops. (Who actually, BTW, besides these Republicans todays, is NOT keen on supporting our troops!? Just more propaganda bullshit). And now it seems, again, that we have even lost majority rule!? What this things about needing 60-votes to get something passed. As we see by the vote here, if we went back to majority rule this amendment would be passed. How come 60 votes weren't required when the Republicans controlled Congress. This whole situations sucks. I bet Senator W

POPSThings we can do before next election With the falling down of the Republicans. We need to get more active and make our demands for a better government. If we like what an independent has to say, we need to vote that person in. Two party rule is not providing the checks and balances it should be. Maybe a three part rule will guarantee a more free society.
