"Truth to Power" by Mark Steyn
merrie
by merrie  11-1-2009    3
He came; he saw; he stimulated: “If you accept the premise, and I do, that the United States is the most powerful country in the world, then Barack Obama is the most powerful writer since Julius Caesar. That has to be good for American artists.” I suppose so. He could invade somewhere and force the natives to accept degrading roles in NEA-funded performance art. He could take out the Iranian nuclear program by carpet-bombing it with unreadable literary novels. That is, if you “accept the premise” that the United States is the most powerful country in the world. Rocco Landesman may, but it’s not clear, from his actions (or inactions) in Eastern Europe, Iran, Afghanistan, and elsewhere, that the president does. But, even so, it seems an odd pitch to “American artists.” Rocco Landesman, Speaking Goof to Power, isn’t the first Obama groupie to enjoy the kinky frisson of groveling obsequiousness, but he’s set an impressive new standard in public revelation thereof.

Viking travel guide warns against hostile Scottish natives
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-22-2009    4
more: A Scot identified in the saga as Grjotgard, a kinsman of Melkolf (Malcolm II), king of Scotland, told them: 'You have two choices. You can go ashore and we will take all your property, or we'll attack you and kill every man we lay our hands on.' The chronicles have been interpreted by Gisli Sigurdsson, a historian at Reykjavik University, who believes the sagas - part fiction, part fact - reveal how the ancient Norse were far from the fearless pirates of legend. Sigurdsson said the tales were a warning to travellers that they would encounter a general foggy area, dangerous landings, hostile natives and language problems. They wrote that the people would probably attack you immediately.

Unemployment & Immigration Tight? Not So Much
nedhamson1

While there might be some connections in limited cases. Mexican, Nicaraguan, Honduran, or Guatemalan construction workers are not taking jobs from anyone - Wall Street took care of that - there is no construction of new homes. Immigrants are not closing down General Motors factories or supplanting US workers - those jobs went to China and then went nowhere as consumers stopped buying their cars. Read on.

Russian nuke subs off USA East Coast
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  8-5-2009
It seems the USA's non-stop lifetime of foreign wars and aggression is getting some push back. With impunity the USA sails nuke subs and aircraft carriers on the coast of Iran and Iraq...did the same in Vietnam....then blames the natives when they get "restless." We're also building a missile base in Poland, on the Russian border. We got troops and funding for the Republic of Georgia...we're trying to get to the world's largest reserve of gas and oil, in the Caspian Sea. If you go into a bear's cave, imo, and start poking around, we shouldn't be surprise if the beast becomes upset. I think this...along with the renewed air flights of nuke weapons bombers near the USA...and Russian making alliances in South America...shows a new Cold War has started: Cold War Two. Or Cold War Reheated. Or we're on 'pre-heat," for the baking up of new tensions. I'd suggest we BUY any oil and gas we might need and give up trying to steal it...and make progress with alternative energi

Eureka!!! 1908 Tunguska Event Caused by Comet ( photos & video )
chestnut501

An Explosion 1000 times greater than Hiroshima, to find out the amazing story of how the mystery was solved, go to http://www.universetoday.com/2009/06/24/1908-tunguska-event-caused-by-comet-new-research-says/ "As the sun rose on the 30th June 1908 in Central Siberia, it was drowned out by a bright light streaking across the sky. Moments later, the atmosphere was reeling from an almighty explosion that, according to eye witness reports, sounded a lot like persistent artillery fire. However, the Earth was not under attack from UFOs, as one popular theory insisted, neither had a black hole just passed through the Earth or antimatter been annihilated as equally popular hypotheses suggested, but instead the natives of the remote Tunguska region had just experienced the most powerful impact event in recent history." The Earth had been hit by a Comet.

He has kicked DADT to the back burner, and there is no indication of when he will begin the process of repealing DOMA. The natives are restless. Exxon Oil Spill Ordered to Pay--Again
lakotahope
by lakotahope  6-16-2009
This Environmental Disaster Saga has been going on for 2 decades. With litigators, the art of the lawsuit is to outlive your opponents. Since the oil spill, families have had children, the children in turn have grown to adults and gone on to college, joined the military and had children of their own. Kind of strikes an angry cord when a jury awards damages, then a judge is simply asked by the defendants lawyers to set aside the verdict or reduce the amount of the award. And, magic, all is good with the world for the defendant.

Oil and Indians Don't Mix
papananook
by papananook  6-12-2009    1
Wally Hickel, the former Governor of Alaska, dismissed my suggestion that the Chugach deserved a bit more respect (and cash) for their property. "Land ownership comes in two ways, Mr. Palast." explained the governor and pipeline magnate, "Purchase or conquest. The fact that your granddaddy chased a caribou across the land doesn't make it yours." The Chugach had lived there for 3,000 years. I asked Chevron about the wave of poisonings and deaths. According to an independent report, 1,401 deaths, mostly of children, mostly from cancers, can be traced to Chevron's toxic dumping. Chevron's lawyer told me, "And it's the only case of cancer in the world? How many cases of children with cancer do you have in the States? ... They have to prove that it is our crude," which, he noted with glee, "is absolutely impossible." Big Oil treats indigenous blood like a cheap gasoline additive. That's why the Peruvians are up in arms. The Cofan of Ecuador, unlike their brothers in Peru,

Well, he we go again. People if you don't want your pet when it grows up, don't buy it at all. If you must get rid of it, have it euthanized . People who just can't don't have the heart to have it killed are the real problem. In some cases it's just plain laziness and/or ignorance. For instance the proverbial kittens off the bridge. But Pythons etc. in the river? Come on. These life forms do so much damage to indigenous fauna and flora it's hard to calculate. I'm thinking better laws and enforcement on bringing these darn things into the country in the first place. Comments? Please...I'd like to hear more from you.
