POPSWhy are feminists like Azar Nafisi called "right wing" "neo cons?"
The quotes in the clip are welcome antidotes to the attitude our Beloved Leader is flacking towards the Islamic Republic of Iran. But the article itself leads into the story of <p>"a vibrant and beautiful young girl, Neda Agha-Soltan, and not the men who rule over Iran has become a symbol of Iranian people's fight for democracy and pluralism. Her murder, like those of Politkovskaya and Estermirova, gives the lie to the claims of those who vainly tried to silence them, and reminds the rest of us that we neither should or can evade the truth and its consequences."</p> The article is about a journalism award in honor of the Russian journalist, Ana Politkovskaya. She says that it was Politkovskaya's <p>"single-minded commitment to truth, and her demand for justice, that made her so dangerous to the tyrants in her country and inconvenient to leaders of western democracies.</p> More than this, Nafisi takes us on a world historical tour of feminists and feminism.

POPSU.S. Says Again: No More Settlement Expansion
This week the new Obama Administration repeated it's positon --- a position in all Middle East peace talks for the last decades - that there should be no more expansion of Israeli settlements. No nothing. No exceptions. No more. They couldn't make it any clearer. Of course, Israeli and pro-zionist news sources thus talk as if the negotations for "renewed peace talks," have failed when, in fact, they haven't even started. The Zionist idea of someone's else's failure appears to mean they don't agree with the Israeli position, or any of it's policies of collective punishment, apartheid and the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people (i.e. Zionism). There is a lot of political backlash on this, for sure. Warmongers, racist, neo-cons and zionist extremist now are the President's worst critics and want to drag him down the most. Of course, These forces also continue to look for excuses or weasel words to keep on with their plans for final conquest of all of Jerusalem and

POPSCIA used mercenaries for assassination program
It's practically a full-time job keeping up with the war lies, war crimes and war ugliness, more revealed everyday. Assassination, btw, is officially against current USA law --- but the CIA, with the encouragement of Bush and Cheney, just decided to ignore this law --- and others laws as well: from torture to protection of civil rights: they felt, apparently, the law did not apply to them. That's always very dangerous, a dark road to fascism. Just 'restoring adherence to the law," by President Obama, has already made things better....better if you believe in human decency. Bounty hunting is not new, btw. The British, the Spanish, the Mexicans and the Americans all gave bounty for Indian scalps. Fascist also can 'hire,' folks from prison for a cartoon of cigarettes and TV privileges to ax murder people, - and, like murder for scalps, it's done. So we can't let warmongering Republicans, neo-cons, racist and right-wing nut jobs back in power. Defeat them remains hig

POPSKissinger Admits Iran Attack Is About Oil As blogger Robert Weissman points out, the "legitimate aspirations" that Kissinger affords Iran later in the piece "do not include control over the oil that the United States and other industrial countries need." According to the CIA's world factbook, Iran has the world's second largest reserves of conventional crude oil at 133 gigabarrels. Adding non-conventional oil, Iran holds 10% of the global oil supply. Kissinger's admission that U.S. control of Iranian oil supplies is the real agenda behind hostility towards Iran would raise eyebrows and bring condemnation from many, but there are a hard core of Neo-Con cheerleaders who would support such an agenda even if it is openly accepted that nuclear proliferation is just a smokescreen for looting more middle east oil.

POPSObama: $2.4 billion electric vehicle grants
So cool. So many positive programs have been put on track by President Obama it's amazing! On domestic and foreign policy, he's second to none. Of course, now we have to hope there won't be a crash landing. Crash landings are possible for everything in life. There certainly is a lot of risk, not with the money spent so much as the Guarantee and Backup Insurance the government has pledged. But...for every economic issue you could probably have a five-way debate, but the fact is people are buying cars again, big bucks is being put into alternative energy cars (and other alternative energy programs), home sales and prices starting to stabilize, banks making profits instead of going out of business....and good people programs also happening and the major achievement of national health care may finally happen. P.S. It's only our warmongering Republicans, neo-cons, racist and right-wing nut jobs and corrosive, toxic media that makes it sound different. The real picture is clear p

POPSBlackwater Founder Implicated in Murder
Blackwater is one of the so-called "private security contractors," -- i.e. mercenary armies used by the USA military in Iraq. Private armies are a classic and very dangerous sign of growing fascism. Why? -- Because they start murdering people who threaten their business or don't agree with their ideology....which is what this case filed in federal court is about. The growing thugishness of the Republicans, neo-cons, racist and special interest corporations is another worrisome sign of growing fascism....there are now many report of Town Hall meetings being disrupted and people intimidate at these public meetings. Images of people being "hung in effigy," and things like that also growing...the images and rhetoric of violence moving into high gear. These same thug tactics were used to shut down the Florida vote counting in the 2000 elections and all the leaders were on the Republican payroll. So, buckle up my friends and strengthen yourself...they may push this into rea

POPSStand Up, Joe Klein, So We Can Kick Your A**
as "ass welt journalism" Part of the problem is that journalism terminology glorifies "shoe-leather reporting," whereby you pound the pavement so often you wear out the soles of your shoes. Yet there's no widely used term of approbation for the other kind of reporting. For this very reason, my New Republic colleague Franklin Foer and I decided a few years ago to coin a phrase: ass-welt reporting. I'm not saying that every news story could be reported without leaving one's desk. (Bernstein: "Woodward, look! I found a clip from 1971 in which President Nixon tells the Omaha World-Herald he plans to order his goons to break into Democratic headquarters in the Watergate Hotel!" Woodward: "I'll cancel that meeting with Deep Throat.") I'm simply saying that, sometimes, laziness can be the better part of valor. "Laziness"? POPSSmart Remarks: "It Doesn't Matter If Torture Works" Even if waterboarding and slamming people against the wall did generate "actionable interigence", even if it worked... So what? The productivity of torture is irrelevant. Because if we accept that utilitarian argument... Why should we stop at only "enhanced interrogation"? Why not cut off a few fingers? Why not stretch people on the rack? Bamboo slivers under the fingernails. The Iron Maiden. Put peoples heads in vises. Rape a few. Do it in groups, and make everyone watch, knowing what order they're going in. If they produce "actionable intelligence", why wouldn't you? If the ends justify the means, once you go down that road... what reason would there be to stop? Not that it actually did stop any attacks against the US. But for the sake of argument...

POPSWhen Barack's Berserkers Lost The Plot
'I'm not going to Washington to seek their good opinion,' she said as she deftly detached journalists from their readers and viewers. 'I'm going to Washington to serve the people of this country.' In Britain, the most snobbish attacks on Margaret Thatcher did not come from aristocrats but from the communist historian Eric Hobsbawm, who opined that Thatcherism was the 'anarchism of the lower middle classes'. George Osborne, of the supposedly compassionate Conservative party, revealed himself to be a playground bully when he derided Gordon Brown for being 'faintly autistic'. In an age when politics is choreographed, voters watch out for the moments when the public-relations facade breaks down and venom pours through the cracks. Their judgment is rarely favourable when it does. Obama knows it. He was warning American liberals to stay away from the Palin family. He understands better than his supporters that it is not a politician's enemies who lose elections, but his friends.

POPSPetraeus to Head Centcom This scares me a bit. Fallon is leaving because of his differences with Bush on his Iran policies. Bush and his neo-cons, including Republican candidate McCain are proponents of military action against Iran. Petraeus also agrees with a tough Iran policy. It is too convenient for my comfort to know that months before Bush is finally to leave office, he is ridding himself of a general who does not favour his Iran policy with one who does. To me this stinks of the probability of war with Iran before the end of the Bush administration, and passing it on to the next president to deal with.

POPSAnalyst Predicts Corn Rationing in 2008 We can't eat corn but we put it in our gas tanks. Corn rationing, Wheat up from $4 a bushell in 07 to over $20 a bushell. Gas is headed to $5.00 a gal, food stamp dependence at record high's with 28 Million people in this country on food stamps. Your government is poised to turn over more regulatory power to the Federal Reserve, a private bank; you know the ones who were indirectly the impetus behind the potential homlessness of 14 million house owners in this country. Yet everything is ok, it's ok nothing going on here. POPSHitler's Favourite Bank Rides High! Planned? US Federal Reserve is backing the deal with $30bn of special financing to fund Bear Stearns' less liquid assets. How can they lose? Natural consequence of George's illegal adventutes in Iraq. Is this the neo-cons pay off now for their foresight? Having belatedly sought EU help in the UN for to his impetuosity, is George again going to seek EU aid to bail him out again?! How often must other pay for George's cockups? Maybe its been all part of the neo-con plan from way back to 9/11 and before. Seems pretty straight forward now in hindsight.

POPSFed uses Depression-Era Law for Loan The discount window could create fear and cause a run on the banks. This tactic was recently used in Britain. However, the bank crisis worsened to the point of actually nationalizing one of their banks. "The Fed can normally only lend through its discount window to banks. Under Section 13-3 of the Federal Reserve Act, added in 1932, it can lend to “individuals, partnerships, or corporations” with the approval of not less than five governors, provided “such individual, partnership, or corporation is unable to secure adequate credit accommodations from other banking institutions.” I am not certain what reverberations this could have in our economy, but given that money is still chip and there really is not much incentive for morons to quit borrowing money, it seems to me that this is a symptom of a critical problem. And lets not fool ourselves, if you are on the Right, this IS caused by Neo-cons.
