Habits May Be Good For You
debbyski
by debbyski  7-13-2008
"Not everyone is comfortable with the arrangements. Some critics complain that public health professionals are becoming too cozy with companies ultimately focused on their bottom lines. Others worry that these advertising techniques may be manipulative. But what Dr. Curtis learned in Ghana suggests that saving the world may be as easy as hawking chewing gum, or, to use a more contemporary example, as simple as training Americans to spray perfumed water on couches that are already clean."

Where the Hell is Matt (Just Laugh)
sahara
by sahara  7-1-2008    1
Where the Hell is Matt: a silly dance in 42 countries that will make you grin like a fool :) ...They were standing around taking pictures in Hanoi, and his friend said "Hey, why don't you stand over there and do that dance. I'll record it." He was referring to a particular dance Matt does. It's actually the only dance Matt does. He does it badly. Anyway, this turned out to be a very good idea. A couple years later, someone found the video online and passed it to someone else, who passed it to someone else, and so on. Now Matt is quasi-famous as "That guy who dances on the internet. No, not that guy. The other one. No, not him either. I'll send you the link. It's funny." The response to the first video brought Matt to the attention of the nice people at Stride gum. They asked Matt if he'd be interested in taking another trip around the world to make a new video. Matt asked if they'd be paying for it. They said yes. Matt thought this sounded like another very good idea.

How To Write That Paper in 39 Easy Steps
carrerinyes
by carrerinyes  5-10-2008
 14. MSN chat with one of your friends about the future. (ie summer plans). 15. Check your email. 16. Listen to your new mp3z and download some more. 17. Phone your friend on the other floor and ask if she's started writing yet. Exchange derogatory emarks about your prof, the course, the college, the world at large. 18. Walk to the store and buy a pack of gum. You've probably run out. 19. While you've got the gum you may as well buy a magazine and read it. 20. Check your email. 21. Check the newspaper listings to make sure you aren't missing something truly worthwhile on TV. 22. Play some solitare (or age of legends!). 23. Check out bored.com. 24. Wash your hands. 25. Call up a friend to see how much they have done, probably haven't started either. 26. Look through your housemate's book of pictures from home. Ask who everyone is. 27. Sit down and do some serious thinking about your plans for the future. 28. Check to see if bored.com has been up

62% Less Children's Tooth Decay: New Gum, better than Brushing
righthand
by righthand  4-9-2008    5
The soft mints are designed to be dissolved and chewed into the biting surfaces of the back teeth, where about 90 percent of cavities in children occur. "Unlike regular candies, we want this product to be stuck in the teeth," said Mitchell Goldberg, president of Ortek Therapeutics Inc, a privately held company in Roslyn Heights, New York, that licensed the technology from Stony Brook. Goldberg said in a telephone interview that unlike sugarless gum, which fights cavities by temporarily increasing the flow of saliva in the mouth, the mints actively neutralize acids that cause cavities. ...Reuters

It's a physical reaction, not a chemical one.

This says the reaction is physical, not chemical, but gum arabic is important. It is because it makes surface tension lower so the bubbles will get out of the bottle?

Science Screensavers-Quotes,photos, and Bizarre headlines
pokkets
by pokkets  10-18-2007    1
There are famous quotes, nature photos, and bizarre headlines screensavers. I've clipped the windows download links, and there is a winzip download at the site. There are also macintosh versions. They work on Windows XP although I can't see it mentioned. The quotes are great, and refresh after a few seconds. the pictures are also great. The headlines? I can't do better than bizarre. The pictures are winners in a nature photography competition run by the site. The file name for the quote screensaver, is Adx I had trouble finding it, but the name shows in the box, when they're installed

Friendly Vending Machines...History
Marinho
by Marinho  10-6-2007    2
"The earliest vending machine was described by Hero of Alexandria in the 1st century ad. A coin dropped into this early vending machine struck a lever, causing a valve to open, which would allow a certain amount of holy water to flow out of the machine. During the 18th century, simple vending machines were used in England and the American colonies to dispense snuff and tobacco. The first chewing gum dispensers were placed on New York City train platforms in 1888. By the time World War II ended in 1945, vending machines dispensing a variety of merchandise could be found throughout the United States. Currently, vending machines can be found not only in the United States, but throughout the world. In the United States, vending machines mainly supply food and are found in hotels, transportation terminals, and institutions. In Europe and Japan, where they are used to supplement the services of retail stores after regular business hours, they carry more varied merchandise."

Eucalypt genome to be sequenced
pokkets
by pokkets  7-4-2007
There is an aspect of Eucalyptus growth and regeneration, that could almost be called the Phoienix Principle. Very often eucalypts require Fire to allow the seeds to germinate. The Australian Aboriginals in their use of the land, would often 'back burn' to clear tinder, and germinate new plants. after a fire The trees that remain recover quickly, and there is room, and fertilizer to allow new plants to grow. Without backburning, or strict monitoring, undergrowth can fuel an inferno that can incineratel existing trees, and seeds. Eucalyptus oil has a Flash point of 49 Degrees C. Fire is common in Australia, and has draws a treendous amount of water from the soil. It has been planted in some areas to lower the water table, and drain swamps. Such drainage can destroy ecologically productive areas
