POPSHot Destination: Lagos, Nigeria I haven't read much about travel to Nigeria, save George Packer's great article in the New Yorker (see here: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2006/11/13/061113fa_fact_packer) about the city's informal economies. A New York Times reporter recently surveyed the city's nightlife, malls and substandard housing and found a huge gap between the wealthy and poor. I think it will be awhile before it becomes a real destination, but it should be interesting to see how travel there increases in the coming years.

POPSPelosi Wants to Save the Planet? Democrats want no oil from the American OCS or ANWR. But of course they do want more oil. From OPEC. From where Americans don't vote. From places Democratic legislators can't see. On May 13 Sen. Chuck Schumer -- deeply committed to saving just those pieces of the planet that might have huge reserves of American oil -- demanded that the Saudis increase production by a million barrels a day. It doesn't occur to him that by eschewing the slightest disturbance of the mating habits of the Arctic caribou, he is calling for the further exploitation of the pristine deserts of Arabia. In the name of the planet, mind you. The desire to swing a cluebat at these twits is strong....

This is what Valerie Plame said sworn testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform: Plame also testified that she played no part in deciding to send her husband, former ambassador Joseph C. Wilson IV, on a mission to Niger in 2002 to assess the reliability of reports that Iraq's then-president, Saddam Hussein, was trying to buy yellowcake uranium from that country for use in a secret nuclear weapons program. Some CPD officials could not recall how the office decided to contact the former ambassador, however, interviews and documents provided to the Committee indicate that his wife, a CPD employee, suggested his name for the trip. The CPD reports officer told Committee staff that the former ambassador's wife "offered up his name" and a memorandum to the Deputy Chief of the CPD on February 12, 2002.

POPSIt Must Suck Being Joseph "Yellow-Cake" Wilson IV Now! In his speech, Ambassador Joseph Wilson described himself as the investigator sent to Niger by the government and says the government sent him there and not the CIA (a lie). Wilson said there was nothing to the uranium story (another lie), described the US as "occupiers" of Iraq (a shocking statement at the time), and described a conspiracy to help Israel dominate the Palestinians. Joe Wilson repeated the lie for several years that the Iraq was not seeking uranium from Niger even though five days after Wilson's NYT op-ed, George Tenet put out a statement describing how the person the CIA sent to check out the Niger story (Joe Wilson) found that the Iraqis had indeed tried to open up trade talks, which were interpretted by government officials in Niger as an attempt to purchase uranium ore. POPSPresident Bush exonerated of 'misleading statement's.... Can't deny the facts that are finally coming out. Those who opposed the war will never concede or believe...but time will reveal all the information. My NIL was there. He saw. The American press sooooo wanted to denigrate the President and his decisions. I acknowledge all did not go well, but no one is omniscient. I stand by what the President has done and his reasonings behind it.

POPSThe voices in the wilderness While the inept press fawn over the words of a charlatan we should not forget that he said nothing profound. Mixed in his barrage of blame and support for hate was nothing new. The press describes this as a speech dignifying racial harmony? The call for racial harmony is empty when made with utter contempt for the feelings of all Americans while showing your support for a racist preacher with an ideology founded on racism called Black Liberation Theology. There are those speaking out. They have been speaking out for decades wihtout appealing to failure, blame, pity, and excuse-making. We should not forget them.
