POPSEdgar Allan Poe finally getting proper funeral
If you are a fan of E.A.Poe, as I am, this entire article is a must read. ~~~ "When they dug up Poe's body in 1875 to move it, it was mostly skeletal remains," Jerome said. "I've seen remains of people who've been in the ground since that time period, and there's hardly anything left." Instead, Jerome commissioned local special-effects artist Eric Supensky to create an eerily lifelike — or deathlike — mock-up of Poe's corpse. "I got chills," Jerome said Monday upon seeing the body for the first time. "This is going to freak people out." The body will lie in state for 12 hours Wednesday at the Poe House, a tiny rowhome in a gritty section of west Baltimore. Visitors are invited to pay their respects. Following the viewing will be an all-night vigil at Poe's grave . Anyone who attends will have the opportunity to deliver a tribute. On Sunday morning, a horse-drawn carriage will transport the replica of Poe's body from his former home to the graveyard for the funeral.

POPS Irving Kristol Irving Kristol, 1920-2009: Godfather of Neoconservatism (Read WP posts from Donald Douglas) | (Read MT posts from Donald Douglas) The Astute Bloggers graciously provides the New York Times link, “Irving Kristol, Godfather of Modern Conservatism, Dies at 89.” Also, my good friend Ken Davenport has written his own thoughtful commemoration, “Irving Kristol, 1920-2009.” Ken focuses on how Kristol’s neoconservatism has become the most important critique of modern statist ideologies (and of especially the consequences of post-1960s Democratic Party social policy). There’s lots of commentary at Memeorandum. See Jules Crittenden, GayPatriot, Power Line, The Other McCain, and Outside The Beltway. See especially John Podoretz’s obituary at Commentary, and Robert Kagan at the Washington Post. And Myron Magnet, at City Journal, shares a personal anecdote about Kristol’s compassion: Read more >>> http://www.memeorandum.com/090918/p115#a090918p115

POPSPolite Obituaries? Not So Much for Jesse Helms Last Year The Washington Post stressed Helms “rode his divisiveness to victory.” The New York Times obituary threw punches, describing him as the senator “whose courtly manner and mossy drawl barely masked a hard-edged conservatism that opposed civil rights, gay rights, foreign aid and modern art.” The networks were no better. NBC’s Lester Holt blatantly copied the Times: “He staked out firm positions against everything from communism and foreign aid to civil rights and modern art.” let's recall how Helms was eulogized on the Ed Schultz radio show last year. Fill-in host Norman Goldman said this: "That race-baiting, racist, horrible Jesse Helms ad got him ahead of Harvey Gantt and got him reelected in 1990. Harvey Gantt would have made a much better senator and Jesse Helms shamelessly played the race card. He was a miserable rat. The world's a better place without him. I hope he's down there in hell roasting with Jerry Falwell."

POPSMennonites in Mexico I'm a volunteer contributor to the Obituary Daily Times. One of the newspapers I index is the Winkler Times. I noticed there are a significant number of deaths with references to birth in Mexico. So, I did a little poking around. And, this is what I found.

POPSThe Great Obituary "No group of individuals had closer contact with Jesus than those listed above. Their conclusion, even unto death, was that Jesus was God. Multitudes of unnamed Christians of the same and following eras likewise perished faithful to the conviction that Jesus is Lord. " "Tacitus, in his work Annals, tells us of the fate common to Christ's faithful, under Nero, who refused to recant their beliefs: Mockery of every sort was added to their deaths. Covered with the skins of beasts, they were torn by dogs and perished, or were nailed to crosses, or were doomed to the flames and burnt, to serve as a nightly illumination, when daylight had expired."

POPS1927-2008 Eartha Kitt Eartha Kitt, the sultry American singer and actress who died on Christmas Day aged 81, had a career spanning six decades and mesmerised audiences with her mellifluous voice and sensuality on both stage and screen. But her beginnings on a cotton plantation in South Carolina were far more humble. Her parentage is still uncertain, but her mother, she told The Times in April, was "taken advantage of" by the son of a white plantation owner in South Carolina. Miss Kitt was raised in poverty by a woman named Anna Mae, whom for much of her life she believed to be her mother.
